i generally find the idea of nicki minaj more interesting than the actual output of nicki minaj, but if this -- "gunning for the patriarchy . . . flipping rape culture" -- is an accurate description of the album's vibe and demeanor, i want to hear it.

setting everything else aside, her star-turn in kanye's monster was otherworldly good, obv.

the beat on the new one is serious, anyone know who produced?

one throwaway line saying "i'm raping you" constitutes "flipping rape culture"?

"flipping rape culture" is.... a bit generous

it's gonna bother me to no end if they call this The Pink Print and not The Pinkprint

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 13 February 2014 00:09 (six years ago) link

Maybe it's a fashion reference and not what you're thinking of.

Murgatroid, Thursday, 13 February 2014 00:21 (six years ago) link

i guess it could be both but it's definitely a reference to the blueprint, c'mon

Murgatroid, Thursday, 13 February 2014 01:00 (six years ago) link

i like the new song but yeah it doesn't sit right to act like the "you can't get with me unless you have money" conceit is pro-feminist

j0rdan otm about pinkprint too, that's a good title as is, fashion pun is a bridge too far

een, Thursday, 13 February 2014 02:00 (six years ago) link

i am excited for this

dyl, Thursday, 13 February 2014 05:19 (six years ago) link

yeah i guess i am not as impressed by 'rhyming the same word with itself over and over' as others. and the class stuff is pretty vile too (99% stand up).

so often when i hear nicki rap i want her to take on some, any other subject, just for the sake of sheer novelty

maura, Thursday, 13 February 2014 14:57 (six years ago) link

Maura spot on. The track is fine, but the idea that there's a progressive message (or even real, significant thought) behind the sub-IANAHB2 garbage that comes out of her mouth and that we must celebrate her for speaking rare, important truths is just insane to me.

Evan R, Thursday, 13 February 2014 15:02 (six years ago) link

this track loses a lot w/o the visual i think... it's mostly just a sketch of a song otherwise

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 13 February 2014 15:05 (six years ago) link

that rape line is really not cool

boxedjoy, Thursday, 13 February 2014 15:14 (six years ago) link

I dont even get how this attacks patriarchy, even slightly. It attacks men she's not attracted to because they aren't successful enough.

Treeship, Thursday, 13 February 2014 15:22 (six years ago) link

Right. If anything it reinforces patriarchy.

maura, Thursday, 13 February 2014 15:23 (six years ago) link

This makes me want to play "Sucka Nigga" at full volume on loop for about an hour.

Fight the Powers that Be with this Powerful Les Paul! (DJP), Thursday, 13 February 2014 16:32 (six years ago) link

i love nicki for the sociopathic hedonistic ultracapitalist thrills and i'm excited for this album but you have to work p fuckin hard to get progressivism out of her money-and-aggression shtick. the closest she comes to actually being progressive is that song where she lists all the famous women she's hanging out with. that isn't very close. i like her cuz her narcissism's a rush.

the most patriarchy-hostile stuff she does is the goopy pop songs that boys hate.

I agree w Maura, that said we've tolerated gross lines from dudes that can rap their ass off forever

sXe & the banshees (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 13 February 2014 18:24 (six years ago) link

they had much smaller asses, though

xp haha yeah, a+ smileys

on another note, saw Nicki live a few weeks ago, show was so-so in places but her technique was flawless, I was impressed

niels, Thursday, 23 July 2015 10:31 (five years ago) link

she's tightened up her live show so much since the last tour

lex pretend, Thursday, 23 July 2015 10:32 (five years ago) link

i listen to this album a lot btw, appreciate that the pop/rap schism is not as stark as reloaded. agree with what i recall to be the consensus that it starts extremely ploddingly even if she's being Intimate and shit, like the first two songs barely seem to qualify as rap, but i do actually rly love "the crying game": love the crawling lil guitar figure, love her inflection on "asian rug". also lol i bought this at target and it's the one where anaconda is mistakenly an "instrumental", i.e. a beat with occasional blurts of sir mix a lot. did not think nicki could top the time i bought the re-up and the readable side of the roman reloaded cd was inexplicably splattered with purple paint i had to scrape off at the not-too-dear expense of "whip it".

^^this was my favourite piece though especially as the author seems to snap halfway in and just goes "THE VMAS ARE TRASH AND SO IS TAYLOR'S VIDEO AND NICKI'S VIDEO AND ALL THE NOMINATED VIDEOS"

lol yes, this is totally my position

i kinda like "barbie tingz" even tho she has done the same kinda thing better in the past. "stupid hoe" ofc was amazing.

(btw i wouldn't read too much into its current chart position so early in the game. both singles are likely to nosedive down the charts next week now that the initial flurry of activity is cooling down, and it's worth remembering that "no frauds", which in retrospect basically bombed, did manage to frontload its way to #14.)

dyl, Wednesday, 25 April 2018 01:44 (two years ago) link

Luv her x1000, but not particularly feeling either new single...

^This. "Chun Li" is good I guess, but not particularly memorable while "Barbie Tingz" is just meh.

mostly sad that she felt she had to play into the beef-with-Cardi narrative, even though Cardi herself seems uninterested in the whole thing. kind of obviously rushed these singles out to coincide with Invasion of Privacy's release.

I was considering buying a ticket for her tour w/Future -- I haven't been to a rap show since like 1991, but I really want to see the "queen" at least once -- but not so sure now this is the tour to see.

empire bro-lesque (morrisp), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 15:50 (two years ago) link

It's better and more cohesive than Pinkprint. It's just difficult to get excited about Nicki doing the same thing she's been competently doing since then over a full album.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 16:38 (two years ago) link

pinkprint had more awesome songs than this

not sure what she has left to say really... feels like she's mostly just making the same songs over and over
