Also new this week:

Stellar - Mask http://youtu.be/UGOO2FO9Ipo good in a low-key way, video still has some questionable scenes like Marionette did but overall I'm feeling sorry for going off on centurionprix about that

Lip Service - Too Fancy http://youtu.be/0K_891MD-kU between the chorus lifted from Macklemore, sax solo lifted from Ariana Grande and title, you get the impression they weren't 100% prepared for the success of Yum Yum Yum

Finally made my way to the GP Basic track forapper linked upthread, which I think may be getting a second push. Strong, punchy track that's still got a lilt and a spark. I actually like the track it's paired with even more, "Black Bounce" - a throat grabber with real beauty amidst the grabbing. Youngest member, Janey, was a guest with D-Unit on the latter's excellent work last year. Four years ago, when she was 13, she was actually barred from performing onstage with GP Basic, the govt deciding that for her to perform on TV amounted to her being exploited. For all the emphasis on the group members' youthfulness, there's nothing in their sound that comes across as kids' stuff, except their voices formerly sounding like young people's.

Kudos to soyrev. I especially like (1) the emphasis on musical form and the disruption of same, and (2) that the list is relatively idiosyncratic based on what you find interesting rather than on your trying to cover all the bases that everyone else thinks needs to be covered. Idiosyncratically enough, the two picks that I might have included (given my own different, idiosyncratic taste) are Ga-In's "Tinkerbell" and Girl's Days' "Nothing Lasts Forever." The latter hits my Yardbirds-Dylan-James Brown craving, i.e., their taking a bit of a song and instead of getting on with or going back to the song, working and stretching that bit until it becomes the bulk of the song itself.

Frank Kogan, Friday, 22 August 2014 13:00 (nine years ago) link

I'm not sure the relatively modest social media attention Yum Yum Yum got was all that hard to handle for Lip Service - Too Fancy's stuck on my brain since MV release anyway. don bissa bissa bissa.

Sunny Hill's single is a step in the right direction, absolutely, but yes, the worry is that they'll go back to being bland and shitty like the tepid pre-release ballad. You used to trust that, successful or not, they'd try to push boundaries sonically and lyrically - and that's why their fanbase and sales steadily grew. For inexplicable reasons they dropped that image and I'm not sure they have confidence enough in the group to not jump from style to style.

abcfsk, Friday, 22 August 2014 15:12 (nine years ago) link

Lip Service got some good press overseas... like on reddit... I like that they're sticking with trap and I like their rapping-chanting, it's just hard to get over the Thrift Shop lift.

Black Bounce is great!

hurricane weather (forapper), Friday, 22 August 2014 17:06 (nine years ago) link

Actually it (Black Bounce) kinda reminds me of this MIB song from last year: black suit, black shoes, black tie, black watch, black sunglass, black car... turn up the music bounce

Great interview with YG music video director Dee Shin (she directed Akdong Musician's "Melted" and 2NE1's "Come Back Home"): http://ygfamilyy.tumblr.com/post/95503601079/yg-mv-director-dee-shin-beyondhallyu-interview

Roz, Saturday, 23 August 2014 12:06 (nine years ago) link

At first, we actually shot [2NE1's Come Back Home] to be two videos – one for the original version and another for the acoustic version... They were supposed to each have their own full story lines that followed on from each other. But when YG saw the two videos he felt that they weren’t tight enough to be two full music videos. So we re-edited and mixed the two stories together and made this rather avant-garde video with puzzles to be solved.

Explains a lot...

This was an album track on their last mini but someone at SM or Woolim had the bright idea of digging it up and re-recording it in Mandarin now that Kpop is taking off in China. I think it sounds better in Chinese!

'sup dayo?

New EXID! For some reason, I thought they had disbanded or something.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfXZ6ydgZyo

I don't think this hangs together as well as it should, but they have such gorgeous voices. And as someone pointed out on Omona, all their videos involve them killing a dude. :D

Guessing this is another Digipediproduction (pretty sure they did Orange Caramel's latest MV as well) - they have a really distinctive visual style.

Roz, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 15:05 (nine years ago) link

"I Swear" is really lovely btw, I need to remember to check out their EPs.

Roz, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 15:09 (nine years ago) link

I think the plot of this is that an incompetent (Shinsadong) Tiger takes them apart and can't figure out how to put them back together again, so they kill him with nail polish and then lounge around on tiger-skin rugs.

As far as apologies for making the group and their fans wait so long go, so far so good, but the lyrics don't really let EXID have much dignity, the song is repetitive and simple. Plus they were probably saving money with all the food and balloon shots but they're kind of childish no?

hurricane weather (forapper), Wednesday, 27 August 2014 15:53 (nine years ago) link

I like LE's rap part though, she's got a distinctive voice

xpost Ah thank you! I'm always fascinated by music video directors and their artist muses (eg Corbijn/Depeche Mode, Gondry/Bjork, Muller/No Doubt etc.) and yeah it seems like OC/Digipedi bring out the best in each other.

If that was AKB's label or something I'd go for it. I have so many jpop idol songs in my head.

On a lighter note, S. Korea's goth queen of darkness (Puer Kim) is back looking (and sounding) a bit like Lana Del Rey:

Check the video description for links to the other songs on the mini, they're solid

hurricane weather (forapper), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 03:38 (nine years ago) link

Managers are overworked and drive too fast and seatbelt culture in Korea sucks. Hopefully things can change for the better. RIP.

Do you produce, abcfsk?

― hurricane weather (forapper),

Not at all, fool around with melodies on the piano now and then though.

abcfsk, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 07:44 (nine years ago) link

Apparently the back wheel came off, which makes it sound like a maintenance problem too. Really sad. Ladies Code had some moderate chart success before this so hopefully it'll help raise awareness, at least.

hurricane weather (forapper), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 17:04 (nine years ago) link

Ladies' Code I'm Fine, Thank You at No. 1 in tribute... it probably helps that the song is good.

hurricane weather (forapper), Thursday, 4 September 2014 02:14 (nine years ago) link

Man, I was away on holiday for just a few days and came back to this news - so horrifying and sad. RIP, it seems she was well-loved among other idols. :( :( I hope the others will be ok too.

Roz, Thursday, 4 September 2014 17:43 (nine years ago) link

It's tragic from every direction ;_; I keep expecting to see some acknowledgement on the music shows (or something), but so far there's nothing. The show goes on.

Speaking of... A.KOR leaving a strong impression with their debut, like the BAP of female rookie groups:

Comparison also including my reservations about the group's music...

That Neon Bunny OST song is nice!

hurricane weather (forapper), Saturday, 6 September 2014 17:50 (nine years ago) link

It's terrible but I had a feeling that this was going to happen esp after the reports about the extent of her brain injuries. I kept hoping I was wrong though. :(

This whole thing has just been unspeakably sad - I haven't been able to bring myself to read the comments from fans on all the news articles. It feels like it's been a very sad year for K-pop in general.
