Since there is no thread on him, and since he's been around a good decade or more, and since he's got eight or nine albums to his name and a few EPs, and since I happen to be listening to his proper debut, Triple Point, for the first time - it seemed like a good time to start a thread for the guy.

I like everything I've heard by him - I know Submers the best. S/D?

Eight or nine albums! I have some catching up to do...

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 03:04 (five years ago) link

1999 A New Demonstration of Thermodynamic Tendencies
2001 Triple Point (Kranky)
2002 Submers (Kranky)
2004 First Narrows (Kranky)
2006 Plume (Kranky)
2010 Endless Falls (Kranky)
2011 Coast / Range / Arc (Glacial Movements Records)
2012 Sketches From New Brighton (Kranky)
2013 "Intervalo" (Frond)
2013 "Erebus" (with Bvdub) (Glacial Movements)

The 99 album is demos that wound up on Triple Point. I hadn't heard about any 2013 albums until seeing them on Wikipedia, hence being unsure as to the exact number of proper albums to his name.

Wow that's nuts, I don't have any of the first five. There was a patch there in my Kranky listening/collecting after Godspeed killed the vibe for me a bit.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 03:53 (five years ago) link

Submers is terrific. Definitely worth seeking.

Endless Falls is my favorite.

i only have Plume and i love it, i have no idea why i haven't gotten hold of more. it reminds me of other acts but he nails the sound just right.

another endless falls vote here. i know what ned means about losing interest in kranky in the godspeed years, but damn have they been putting out some fantastic stuff of late

I have occasional moments of self-loathing for not treating myself to "Coast / Range / Arc".

Didn't really get into "Sketches ..." though.

Would recommend Submers. Love how the music thematically fits the various submarine-titled tracks. Great for relaxation. First one I bought, led me to all the other records.

I don't own "Intervalo", but from a quick glance elsewhere, looks it contains all or part of the "City Hospital" book soundtrack he did for Wist Records (which I do own).

Why the C/R/A loathing? Is it no longer available? The first of the Air Texture series, for which he curated a disc, is out of print, and going for $150+ on Amazon.

He has these "concepts" for most/all of his records but from what I've heard I don't really see a point to it. Aside from a unified list of song titles and a lot of wasted words in the opening paragraph of every review, the concepts have no bearing on the music. I guess you could imagine an underwater-ness to Submers, but (forgive the pun) isn't that a shallow connection?

I was listening to Triple Point yesterday, which I think is great, but you got me if I'm supposed to understand what any of it has to do with its supposed theme, thermodynamics.

He played here last night but by the time I decided to go, it was sold out (even though a friend told me today that the place was only half full). Kinda bummed.

I said upthread I wasn't sure what his 2013 releases were since I'd only seen titles. Well, Intervalo just showed up on Spotify—apparently it's a bunch of old/obscure Loscil tracks reworked as collaborations with Kelly Wyse, a pianist. "Endless Falls," "Hastings Sunrise," a couple others. It's nice.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Sunday, 20 April 2014 03:26 (five years ago) link

Endless Falls and Plume are both great. Endless Falls in particular gets a Cascadian vibe unlike a lot of other electronic records made in that region.

Yeah it's great. Something about it feels different from past releases though I haven't put my finger on it yet.

Listened to it yesterday, liked it quite a bit.

Listening more to Sea Island. It's really tense once it gets past the first couple of tracks! Feels like Loscil's "noir" album.

Looking forward to that.

Plume was my entry point and always my favorite. Listened to some Loscil this morning and read a few old Pitchfork reviews. I guess Plume isn't generally thought of as a high point, but whatever. I enjoyed Endless Falls much more than I did when it came out. Never got into Monument Builders, but I may give it another try. Been thinking about his music a lot because of the ambient poll. Really one of my favorite ambient artists.

beard papa, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 17:07 (three months ago) link

Plume is my favourite too. I know he's ambient drone but Plume seems to have a bit more melody about it. Rorschach is gorgeous.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 18:23 (three months ago) link

Triple Point was my entry point— we had it in the freeform section at my uni radio station— and then I promptly forgot about him until 2011, when I became obsessed with Plume and Endless Falls. Very excited for this new one!!

Thoughts on the new one? Based on first listen it feels like his most “ambient” full-length. Some of the trademark Loscil sounds aren’t as present and it feels more spacious and atmospheric.

Equivalents 4 (the last track) is the standout for me. It would fit on Plume or Endless Falls. I’m enjoying this as a whole more than I have any of his post-EF releases.

beard papa, Tuesday, 27 August 2019 17:30 (three weeks ago) link

I was a bit merely whelmed at first, but for me it gets better with subsequent listen.

Yes, it's very lovely for sure.
