Major Arcana is fantastic, distinctive guitar rock that sounds fresh. sadie dupuis writes good lyrics + i like her voice + she doesn't sound like anyone else.
Speedy Ortiz might be the best new guitar band

Listened to this earlier, will give it a few more listens but will say that it didn't do an awful lot for me and I've liked a great deal of "guitar band" stuff this year.

I want to like them, and she comes across as pretty bright in interviews and the band likes lots of 80s and 90s stuff I like, but that narrow vocal range holds me back. Maybe if I listen a few more times.

I wonder if the Pitchfork review set me up to expect more, hence my not being so blown away by this. After a bunch of listens, it's putting me in mind of bands like Autoclave (so pre-Helium) and Tsunami and such. Nothing wrong with it per se, but not something I'd get breathless about. I like the Fists album much more, if we're talking about 90's influenced (mostly) girl guitar rock.

dlp9001, Thursday, 15 August 2013 16:02 (ten years ago) link

A Washington Post freelancer I respect and the W. Post's lead critic whom I also usually agree with are calling this an album of the year, and Pitchfork has it as a best of, and so I was expecting more too.

man, both times i've seen them in the last six months have been pretty disappointing. i can't really fault a band in their position - on the up, touring/travelling constantly, presumably under a ton of pressure - to be 100% into it at every show, but never before have I seen a band just like ooooooze "we really dont want to be here." they played like 6 songs both times. the songs are really good though so I'll see them again when they're in town. haven't heard the ep

i also enjoy in line skateing (spazzmatazz), Monday, 17 February 2014 18:12 (ten years ago) link

Definitely worth seeing at their other show tomorrow if anyone has the chance.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/12/arts/music/sadie-dupuis-of-speedy-ortiz-adds-pop-hooks-to-the-bands-sharp-edges.html?_r=0

She talks about Stephen Malkmus and more...

excerpts--

For its last album, Speedy Ortiz jammed the recording of 14 songs into four days. This time, Ms. Dupuis and her bandmates — Devin McKnight on guitar, Darl Ferm on bass, Mike Falcone on drums — worked for a relatively lavish three weeks...

What do you listen to on tour?

We tour really cheap, in a minivan, and the driver decides. Clipse is probably the biggest overlap. We get so burned out on hearing rock every night that we gravitate a lot toward pop and rap...

What other singers and lyricists have influenced your writing?

Fiona Apple does things with sentences over the course of a verse that I can’t even believe. So I’ll keep that in mind: “What would Fiona Apple do?” I also sang in a children’s choir until I was 16, and we would tour internationally. I was really into stuff that was harmony-heavy because that was what I was spending 10 hours a week doing in rehearsal. I’ve always thought Beyoncé’s vocal harmonies were really weird. A lot of the stuff in the choir was really dissonant, and she’ll do that — the harmony will be in a totally different key. Another one that is obvious to me but maybe doesn’t come across is Aaliyah. There were certain things on this record where I was like: “Oh, Aaliyah wouldn’t push this. She would do it calm.” And the reverse reverb that Timbaland would apply to her vocals, we used that on a couple songs.
