Blue Monday placing #9 feels like an overcorrection to me -- even as I had it at 10.

xpost Or 11 people who didn't bother voting for it because they knew it would end high no matter what and wanted to lend their support to some other song.

it's just weird to me, people saying it's "overplayed," because I NEVER hear that song and it's so obviously great

I hear the '88 remix a bunch on one of the local commercial radio stations.

they don't play any version on the radio here, though I guess I should be glad because I don't like the '88 version

In the early-mid 2000s Blue Monday felt like the token 'pop' moment on a million electro house mixes.

Except maybe for my #1 (and absence of "Blue Monday"), this is like all my ballots where I'm just a casual fan--what a K-Tel best-of would look like:
1. “All Day Long” (50)2. “Dreams Never End” (46)3. “Ceremony” (43)4. “Temptation” (40)5. “Love Vigilantes” (38)6. “Bizarre Love Triangle” (36)7. “Fine Time” (35)8. “The Perfect Kiss” (34)9. “Your Silent Face” (33)10. “Everything’s Gone Green” (32)

"Blue Monday" is ok, but I like a bunch of other NO songs more. It was never a pop event in my world the way say "True Faith" was, and I like NO best when they mix the robotic and human more amply.

RE: 'Blue Monday'Yeah, I didn't place it that high for two reasons: 1) I figured it was a lock for the top ten, if not the top five and 2) I like it, yet it's never been my favorite anything. It's certainly a landmark moment in pop music, and a darn catchy tune, but they also have such a strong catalogue. It's really remarkable when you think about the high quality of their output up until the early 90's.
Overall, I am disappointed in the top five, but I can't honestly say that it's not totally representative of some of their best work — which just speaks volumes about how great they were (and still are, to a certain degree).

My ballot. I've always thought of them as one of the best singles bands ever, so I didn't rank the albums, but this poll encouraged me to seek out good album tracks ("Your Smiling Face" was the big find for me, plus I've always loved "Close Range").

I always under-rate Temptation, probably because I have the original 7" and the snare is mixed too damn loud. Later mixes reveal the true glory of the tune. Anyway, I guess my ballot is pretty uncontroversial, although I would have liked to see Chosen Time and Ecstasy place higher than they did.

BLT's there, no? Maybe I chose a source that's not licensed in all territories.
I would have guessed there was more love out there for "The Him". Certainly my favourite Movement track behind "Dreams Never End". (Which I thought was obvious top 10 material, for that matter, so I'm quite clueless.) More colour and movement than other still-sounds-like-Joy-Division dirges like, say, "In a Lonely Place".

For me it's just so blisteringly self-evident that PCL is their magnum opus. And I'll always love 'Your Silent Face' above all. The first minute or so of that track is sublimity itself to me.
This was a great poll thread. I wasn't in the right frame of mind to make a ballot when it was voting time but I had a heavy deadline last weekend and spent all weekend listening to NO thanks to this thread. (The Recycle blog versions, naturally-- damn they sound so much better than the officials).
Used the Spotify thread to hear the 00s stuff I've never heard before. Not feeling it so far. There's no fatness to the sound and Barney's voice sounds anonymous. Will try harder.
― 2 huxtables and a sousaphone (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 6 June 2013 15:15 (ten years ago) link
If there's no fatness to the sound, you might want to double-check your speakers/headphone because you are likely missing the sub bass on the dancier songs. (Also I think Barney sounds "in tune" rather than "anonymous" but YMMV)
