Young Thug thread

Can Young Thug have his own thread? 1017 Thug is one of the mixtapes of the year, and the guy is killing every guest verse he lands (and he's landing way more than I can keep up with). Feels like it's only a matter of time until he gets his crossover moment, and when he does it's going to be really wild.

(He only takes the leadoff verse on that last one, but it's a great verse.)

yeah this guy is just great

1017 thug is fantastic almost all the way through... "shooting star" is the real underrated track on there imo

J0rdan S., Monday, 20 May 2013 18:32 (seven years ago) link

"Shooting Star" is crazy catchy. I wish the Gucci verse were more substantial (though I think he sounds really good on that track regardless).

I still think ICFN2 is his best release.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Monday, 20 May 2013 21:10 (seven years ago) link

he should become a star.

sisilafami, Monday, 20 May 2013 22:13 (seven years ago) link

ICFN2 is definitely his most approachable release, and the one I listen to the most, but 1017 is way more interesting, since it's so far out there so much of the time. It's one of those tapes that feels like it's more interested in testing ideas than presenting them

Evan R, Monday, 20 May 2013 22:21 (seven years ago) link

really can't deal with this dude on any level, can't take the boring autotune garble or the tinny production or the sickly melodies at all. only midway through this did i remember that you all hyped him up last year and i couldn't even get through that mixtape

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 10:12 (seven years ago) link

what new ideas anyway? it's like bargain basement future (also how many rappers are doing garbled autotune shit atm?)

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 10:13 (seven years ago) link

oh my god "tabernacle" is unlistenable, those whoa whoa whoas

this is almost all unlistenable

i'm still not sure Young Thug isn't an elaborate prank like when Odd Future announced the new signing 'Young Nigga'

'ICFN2' is the tape i return more often to - especially the euphoria that comes across stuff like 'i know', who's on top' or 'curtains' -, but '1017 thug' feels more coherent to me - 'nigeria' ftw.

'ICFN3' didn't really make that much of an impression, besides a few songs - 'foreign' especially. i prob should listen to it again, tho.

rusty_allen, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 11:42 (seven years ago) link

The Future comparison doesn't work for me, because Future's energy is so subdued; Young Thug is always wired-up and spazzed out. And some of Thug's stuff is deliberately obnoxious, but I have a high tolerance for that because I listened to way too much punk growing up. (It's interesting that Thug is one of the few rappers who really gives off a strong punk vibe, even though there's no real indication he's actually influenced by punk in any direct way.)

Evan R, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 14:34 (seven years ago) link

lotta swag rappers have nasal cali punk voices, whether by coincidence or whatever

r|t|c, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 11:47 (seven years ago) link

Evan R, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 14:43 (seven years ago) link

i feel absolved. it's not me it's punk

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 15:09 (seven years ago) link

It definitely helps to be inoculated against some of the nasally-ness

Evan R, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 15:42 (seven years ago) link

lol ok well I'm listening to "2 Cups Stuffed" and according to me the answer to "does he write good lyrics" is "possbily kinda" however his style is kinda undeniable, and "L-E-A-N-I-N-G/lean, lean, lean, lean, lean lean lean!" just killed me. also really like "gimme a cup twice/go light on the ice"

1 thug 2 cups

some dude, Thursday, 30 May 2013 14:44 (seven years ago) link

"Gimme a cup twice" cracks me up. That song really nails the frustration of having to wait for anything. I always think of it whenever I'm in line at the grocery store or a sandwich shop or whatever now

I was wondering if radio would pick up on that one. It'd be an exciting hit, but I guess it's not gonna happen unless Drake jumps on the remix or something

Evan R, Monday, 20 January 2014 20:43 (seven years ago) link

can you get a song like that on American radio?

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Monday, 20 January 2014 20:45 (seven years ago) link

Not really. It's not unheard of for regional club hits to worm their way onto radio, but the structure of this one is pretty unorthodox. Still, with enough momentum, I dunno, I was holding out hope.

Evan R, Monday, 20 January 2014 20:58 (seven years ago) link

if drake remixes it

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 20 January 2014 21:00 (seven years ago) link

which didn't seem all that far fetched after the Vine of him geeking out to the track went viral. Track also has big co-signs from Kanye West and Jay-Z, so that's some pretty substantial support

A lot of writers are really invested in promoting the narrative of Young Thug as some unassailable creative genius, aren't they? All of those name drops in the n+1 piece are astounding, it almost reads like parody of the discourse that has surrounded him over the last 5 years or so.

good Noisey interview with the engineer, interesting comments on the Rocket Man leak:

How hard of a secret is that to keep?
I actually hadn’t heard it until I got it for this project, which was after the leak. I don’t listen to any leaks. If I see it, I block whoever posted it and move on. It’s that upsetting where it’s like, I’d just rather not. So when someone wants to talk about it, I just block them and go about my day. It’s just easier. I would be angry all the time if that’s all I saw. I saw it briefly, and people were hitting me, and I was just like, I don’t know. It’s one of those situations where you hope it doesn’t ruin a great song and this time we didn’t let that happen. When it comes to songs leaking, it’s such a sore spot especially for us considering how many songs leaked in the past. I’m just happy this one made the cut. It’s such a big moment for him, that I’m glad he didn’t let people outside of the camp ruin it for him.
