I don't know about new Candyman but I saw somewhere that Diggs had talked about loving the '90s movie.

I'm back on The Deep EP and it boggles my mind that people are interpreting "y'all remember when you had to let 'em breathe" is a line about the Drexciyans showing the surface dwellers mercy in a song that ends with a giant tidal wave on an EP that ends with a song called "Drownt" using slang that is most commonly used to describe shooting someone, ie putting holes in them to ventilate them

also:
“There Existed an Addiction to Blood” closes with a cover of the composer Annea Lockwood’s “Piano Burning,” for which the group set a piano on fire in the desert, recording the crackles and pops on 17 microphones. Eight mics did not survive the session, including an Audio-Technica 825 that Snipes had since college.
“We were listening to that channel, and it was just crackling,” Hutson said. “We were like, ‘Oh my God, look at it, it’s on fire.’”

I hate to say it, but I found myself a bit bored with this one, barring the highlights. The contemporary classical namedrops are pure pap as far as I’m concerned but I wish they’d look beyond minimalism (broadly speaking) because there’s not always enough going on in the music to keep me fully engaged. This was not an issue on their previous LP, including on the piano-burning closer. I probably need to spend more time with the whole thing.
― pomenitul, Friday, 23 October 2020 14:08 (three years ago) link
ha, I think I prefer this one just because there are More Bangers

The bangers on this one top the bangers on TEAATB, no doubt about it.
― pomenitul, Friday, 23 October 2020 14:24 (three years ago) link
That said I wouldn't mind them mixing up the sonic palette a little more on the next one (though yes I know these came out of the same sessions as TEAATB)

They already released an all-time masterpiece in 2016; I'm pretty content for them to make simply great albums, which they're doing imo
― imago, Friday, 23 October 2020 14:56 (three years ago) link
I'm lukewarm on "Say The Name," but the rest of this album has so far been one "holy shit" moment after another for me.

Though Diggs is an animated performer, he isn’t a strong orator
There is a lot wrong in that review, this line is the most egregious.

by contrast occasional pfork contributor and wonderful songwriter in his own right Fred Thomas unsurprisingly nails their appeal in his AMG review - "the midway point between Wolf Eyes and Three 6 Mafia"

idk, it reminds me of when I dragged my friend to see Hausu at an ATP and he was like "that's not a horror" because it's not scary, but it's one of my favorites because I love the filmmaking and the humor and weirdness. I don't watch horror movies to be scared!
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 26 October 2020 15:23 (three years ago) link
yeah, that makes sense. am i wrong in thinking the critical issues of "authenticity" that i keep seeing from other reviewers (not gangsta enough, too clear of a flow, too dramatic in presentation, too gonzo) run perilously close to "not black enough"?
