i watched the other ones, i love how they're able to function as a tight band w/no rehearsal because they all have that common vocabulary of Prince's stage cues ("on the 1" = stop, then come back with "good god!" where "god" always falls on beat 3, etc). i mean i know it all comes from james brown, but it's really specific Prince shit.

this is quite good from what ive heard so far, even if it could have been recorded in 2001 (not that i dislike it, but it just seems a bit of a shame, hes still playing the same old rap instrumentals, pretty much the same old covers he was doing in 96... why?!), rather than march of this year. i dont have much faith in his comeback really yielding anything that amazing at this point. and it seems kinda fucked up that bilal is still releasing good records, and actually has a strong identity of his own, while were all still waiting for dangelo to make the album we all thought he could make...

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 08:06 (seven years ago) link

actually, this is pretty great (even if it is covers). from the 57 min mark, its pretty special. and just makes me more frustrated at his general lack of output. argh.

ugh. i have a feeling we're going to have to wait for the confluence of D both being ready to let go of the record + being sober enough to do the promo and tour.

he's doing a poor job of shaming dangelo in that case (i dont think he is doing that in any case, i think hes too aware of dangelo's mental fragility, he doesnt want to upset things too much, beyond airing some frustration and playful digs about his career inertia - dangelo wont let the new record be heard until hes laboured it to death most likely)

four weeks pass...

Billboard a week ago:

In March of 2013, Liles told Billboard, "We're trying to finish the album. Right now we have 13 songs done, trying to think about the sequence of the album, mastering and mixing within the next two weeks, and release the thing. Ain't no question it's coming."

Judging by that tectonic pace, the album actually should be just about approximately almost 100 percent done right about now. Here's what Liles said:

"Here's the thing: with D'Angelo it was a process. He didn't perform for 10 years and he's been working on an album for the past 12 years. I actually got him to go out and do 30 shows (in 2011-2012), and then we did some 'Brothers in Arms' shows. I said, 'We have to get motivated around what people want to hear from you, and what does it mean to come back to that space?' He very bluntly put it, 'Kev, the studio and the stage: that's my lifeblood. Now that I've touched it again, now that I see it again, I wanna be sure that the baby I'm about to have -- the album -- that I take it to the point where it's all it can be.'

"There'll be an album this year: there's 14 records so far, we might have a couple of bonus records, but all the recording is basically done and we're mixing and mastering now. Definitely, he'll be back.

Claiming he has 14 records ready to go sort of undercuts even the modest claim that he even has one record ready to go.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 18:20 (six years ago) link

"record" = song

festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 25 June 2014 18:21 (six years ago) link

yeah, usually modern industry guys say 'record' and mean song, not album.

some dude, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 18:22 (six years ago) link

(that usage confused me when i first heard it but now i hear it all the time from people in the rap world)

Anyway, not holding my breath.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 19:02 (six years ago) link

Sufjan Grafton, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 19:05 (six years ago) link

I need to write down the tracklisting. I could see d'angelo as a DJ. God knows he has the time in between albums!

candyman, Friday, 5 February 2021 22:16 (one month ago) link

Good thing he knows "the secret to beating writer's block".

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 5 February 2021 22:22 (one month ago) link

Actually I have no trouble believing that he has no issue with writer's block, he just takes forever laboring over a record and deciding he wants to release something.

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 5 February 2021 22:23 (one month ago) link

Wonder what his discogs username is.

candyman, Friday, 5 February 2021 22:47 (one month ago) link

questlove has said that he's a perfectionist and a tinkerer who never thinks his music is good enough to be released

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Friday, 5 February 2021 22:48 (one month ago) link

and yet Black Messiah sounds the opposite of laboured; the influences and references are all upfront, but it still sounds fresh, spontaneous, rough almost. certainly not overproduced.

mahb, Friday, 5 February 2021 23:33 (one month ago) link

i was at the press event where they played black messiah for the first time ever and i remember questlove saying that they essentially had to wrest control over the music from d’angelo during a very small window of time in order to get a track list done and the album released, or else he never would’ve put anything out. but it’s not like the songs weren’t done

J0rdan S., Saturday, 6 February 2021 02:03 (one month ago) link

Hed never over produce his music. He likes early 70s stuff too much to do that I think his tinkering is more in the Coppola sense. There will always be something else he thinks of.

to demonstrate how long stuff can gestate with him, questlove leaked this version of "really love" all the way back in 2007 and while it's missing a few details that were added to the final version, it's not like it was radically reworked or anything since then

exciting. i predict it wont be maxwell or anyone like that, it will just be a friendly kind of battle with his usual buddies like questlove, q-tip, etc.

candyman, Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:10 (two weeks ago) link

he should challenge 20 different artists to pit their best song against cuts from the three albums and casually obliterate them

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:14 (two weeks ago) link

well that seems like that's the plan right? it's "vs friends"

That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:15 (two weeks ago) link

not sure what the actual plan is, seems like it'll be more of a performance than past verzuz events

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:16 (two weeks ago) link

it's hardly a true analogue but the only contemporary artist i can think of off the top of my head that i'd like to hear go song-for-song against d'angelo song for song is usher

That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:17 (two weeks ago) link

yeah it's at the Apollo so i think it'll be more of a performance than just pressing play and awkwardly dancing to it or whatever the fuck artists do at these things now (sorry haven't watched a Verzuz in months)

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:19 (two weeks ago) link

xp i'd like to see d'angelo vs. badu, but she already did a charming edition with jill scott

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:20 (two weeks ago) link

(this is the part where i say that i saw d'angelo at the apollo during the black messiah tour and that it was a top 25 concert for sure)

That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:21 (two weeks ago) link

brandy vs dangelo would have also been a fucking knockout

That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:22 (two weeks ago) link

usher would be kinda unexpected but actually kind of cool and interesting. trying to think what dangelo would come back with when usher plays OMG though. trying to picture him singing along with "honey got some boobies like wow, oh wow".

id have loved a badu vs dangelo battle. partly to see what they picked, but really just to see what they talk about to each other.

"not sure what the actual plan is, seems like it'll be more of a performance than past verzuz events"

def hope so.

I saw the First Ave show and even though it started real late, was so crowded that you didn't even want to think about using the bathroom for fear of never being able to get back to your spot, the sound was way too loud & noisy, and my knees never hurt so much...it was easily one of the best shows I've ever seen and I'm so glad I did.

I only saw him once, early on the Voodoo tour, couple of months after the album came out. Band was about a dozen people, including Questlove, Pino and Poyser.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 28 February 2021 14:47 (six days ago) link

I saw that tour. Lot of big JB and prince style sections. Worked well for the newer songs, not so well for the brown sugar songs.

candyman, Sunday, 28 February 2021 15:31 (six days ago) link

Huh, I kind of remember it differently. I remember him ripping off his shirt and racing around the theatre while singing "Shit, Damn, Motherfucker."

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 28 February 2021 16:32 (six days ago) link

Lol. Not saying I wasnt thinking, wow, maybe this is what seeing JB might have been like, in 2001, but I mean, you try and make everything into a faster funk number and songs like Brown sugar and shit damn mf or lady lose some of their individuality.
