They actually won me over in the end. Maura's evangelizing helped there.

The Black Parade is a fucking badass album. Seriously.

The Black Parade is a fucking badass album. Seriously.

I'll rep for that one as well as Three Cheers. I wish they were produced differently though.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 23 March 2013 05:45 (four years ago) Permalink

I loved, LOVED Black Parade. Three Cheers had a few good tracks too.

I really liked My Chemical Romance. Sad to see them go. They were one of the ultimate if I had have been 14 or 15 when they came out I would have loved them. The Black Parade is the really good album but I didn't even mind the weird pop album they did a couple of years ago either. In my experience, always unfailingly nice guys as well.

um, start new bands? every high profile breakup seems to produce 2-3 splinter bands/solo projects.

the fact that they've only made one album in the last 6 years should've been a tipoff, i guess. loved everything they did except The Black Parade, RIP.

I super loved MCR but at least this way they're not going out on a disappointing record, I appreciate that.

i definitely o_0 at people who flat out hate them, like how is that possible, i can't really think of a big rock band in the past decade that made such great pop songs so consistently

From an interview I did with Alice Cooper in 2008:

"I hear, like, 'Teenagers' by My Chemical Romance and I'm pissed off I didn't write that song...You get one like that, and I'm going, boy, if the whole album was like that, this would be a Def Leppard album, or this would be an album that you could play all the way through without taking it off. But I heard that one song and I said, that is great...Every once in awhile you hear one that you just kick yourself for not coming up with yourself."

fauxmarc, Saturday, 23 March 2013 17:25 (four years ago) Permalink

Sudden (way overdue) flash of insight that I muttered about, namely that they were a better New Jersey mainstream rock band than Bon Jovi ever has been. (Mall AOR metal vs. mallpunk, mallpunk wins.)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 23 March 2013 17:32 (four years ago) Permalink

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 23 March 2013 17:36 (four years ago) Permalink

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 23 March 2013 17:43 (four years ago) Permalink

That's actually a good question! Then again I don't think of DL as mall AOR metal, I think of them as pop gods, so. :-D

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 23 March 2013 17:44 (four years ago) Permalink

Best NJ band since the Misfits.

誤訳侮辱, Saturday, 23 March 2013 17:52 (four years ago) Permalink

Well, OK, gotta fit Monster Magnet in there, too, but notice what all three of those bands have in common - conceptualism, larger-than-lifeism, a commitment to awesomeness (however defined).

In looking over their Wikipedia entry

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Chemical_Romance

I'm having a sudden 'where has the time gone' moment realizing that a band specifically formed in response to 9/11 has had an entire mainstream career from start to finish since. Just a year younger than ILX as a whole.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 23 March 2013 17:54 (four years ago) Permalink

Hm, listening now, Black Parade does seem to hold up a little better as an album than Cheers.

Three Cheers is the only album of theirs I own - really fun record. also, "Helena" and "I'm Not OK" are two of my favourite videos of the 00s.

Love the way Gerard's a rebooted/fixed Billy Corgan re: US glam anglophilia; glittery Roxy-Music-at-the-mall vibes.

etc, Monday, 6 October 2014 05:50 (three years ago) Permalink

In stuff like "Brother" I also get a strong Todd Rundgren in classicist pop mode vibe.

It occurred to me while listening for the Nth time today that I want Gerard Way and Sky Ferreira to team up for an album.

When I was a young fan
My father took me into the city
To see a touring band

He said son when you grow up
Will you be the buyer of the vinyl
A gatefold in your hand

He said will you order them
These records, from all the eBay sellers
The money they have made

Because one day I'll join you
In the line to own it in the summer
I love The Black Parade

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 July 2016 21:55 (one year ago) Permalink

If you hear one note of the intro, it could either be "The Black Parade", or "Children" Robert Miles.

Two notes confirms which one it is.
