This stuff is great!
Thanks Scott, I had never heard of Mr. Minton before..... (or Misters Lee, Blonk, Dutton, et al....)

Minton is cool, though heh, a little usually goes a long way for me, that said his record "Mouthfull of Ectasy" is a personal fave. I really like him in the context of a jazz band on it. I need to hear more Feral Choir stuff.

chr1sb3singer, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 18:08 (eleven years ago) link

ha! love to hear him with a jazz band, will try and track that down...

I used to really love this album: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=14465 . I hope I have it around and didn't store it at my parents'.

I'm a huge Minton fan, and was at the FIMAV festival that produced the Five Men Singing concert that sund4r linked to -- one of the highlights of the festival.

Minton is really good on -- well, everything, if you like his free approach, but I love Bob Ostertag's Say No More project, which includes PM. And Ostertag has made all his recordings available for free -- http://bobostertag.com/music-recordings.htm

"The Untraceable Cigar" by Roof is really good,it's Minton, Tom Cora on cello, Luc from The Ex on bass and Michael Vatcher on drums. They cover a Harry Partch track ("The Letter"), it all sounds like something between The Ex and Art Bears.

I really wanted to get into that Roof album but it never clicked for me

There's some great duet moments between Phil and Bill Dixon on the Tony Oxley Orchestra's The Enchanted Messenger. Bill raved about Phil, too, really loved his vocals. Apparently, Phil used to be a trumpet player, but had some physical problem that prevented him from playing, so he turned to voice.

I'd urge anyone not to think twice about signing up for his feral choir if you get the chance - some of the most fun I've had with my clothes on. He's a brilliant teacher. Instead of saying anything, he starts off rehearsals by chuckling away, which puts you at ease, and before you know, all inhibitions are gone and you'll make any crazy noise he asks of you.

Seen him a couple of times, going to see him again soon, love his stuff (also notable work not mentioned here: guest spots with News From Babel). I kind of think there are a few too many people who want to be him in 'experimental' circles, but on the other hand, I've seen some AMAZING people who use those techniques, too.

this guy with tony oxley?! i have to hear that.
who's the guy who plays the sheet of glass with the contact mic on it?

m0stlyClean, Thursday, 14 March 2013 03:33 (eleven years ago) link

The dude who rubs broken glass all over his face and eats it and stuff? Justice Yeldham. Who is surprisingly normal and nice in person.

emil.y, Thursday, 14 March 2013 11:19 (eleven years ago) link

I was a member of the feral choir when it performed in glasgow - phil was an amazing and inspirational guy, and the experience made me realise just how incredible he is

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 14 March 2013 11:21 (eleven years ago) link

Phil Minton's a very nice guy, we bought each other drinks one time. Also an unbelievable vocal technician. Indispensable to about a quarter of a century of Mike Westbrook's work (early '70s-mid '90s). His late eighties Vladimir Estragon collaboration with various Neubauten members is also well worth rescuing from the used records pile.

that's the guy. thanks emily.
he's pretty great too, if you dig mr. minton and havent't heard justice yeldham, check him out, there's some good stuff on youtube....

m0stlyClean, Thursday, 14 March 2013 12:46 (eleven years ago) link

lucas abela! yeldham is a stage name.

scott seward, Thursday, 14 March 2013 12:50 (eleven years ago) link

I always think of this when his name comes up:

i've seen him billed to play at lad's mansion in dalston a few times, would love to see him play in that room!

last time i saw him was at the holy trinity church in leeds, he was doing a solo set. closed my eyes and spaced out, was one of the trippiest musical experiences of my life

what? where is that from?
i thought it was real up until the scream at the end....

It's from The Day Today, the Chris Morris spoof TV news show

my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Thursday, 14 March 2013 16:18 (eleven years ago) link

it's a scary spoof. the crappy video quality adds to the vibe....

m0stlyClean, Thursday, 14 March 2013 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

The Glasgow feral choir, in which myself and Ward Fowler partook. Fortunately my wobbling uvula is out of shot. You can get an idea of how he conducts it from watching his movements.

Poor.Old.Tired.Horse. (Stew), Thursday, 14 March 2013 17:37 (eleven years ago) link

oh thanks for putting that up Stew, never seen it before - friends in the audience were all agreed that the opening crescendo was the best part of our performance. i was stood fairly close to the amazing vocal poet Steve McCaffery, who was so expert at this kind of thing it was slightly intimidating - but the way he went for it was also really encouraging.

participating in the choir really brought home to me how difficult improvising (of any sort) is - how you've got to be 'in the moment', responsive to others AND constantly inventing and changing within yr chosen idiom - and that's so difficult to sustain over length of time over a few minutes. i remember at one of the rehearsals that phil asked us all to yodel - and nobody could do it really - whereas he made it seem so easy.

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 14 March 2013 18:18 (eleven years ago) link

That's p/cool.

His stuff w/Roger Turner is excellent from what I recall. Totally pulls off on the serious modern day dadaist front.

Plays Jimi Hendrix! Anyone heard this?

xyzzzz__, Friday, 15 March 2013 21:02 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I got it a few years ago, but haven't listened to it very many times. It's not bad; Minton has it both ways, with extended techniques and also singing the lyrics fairly straight. There's a moment on "3rd Stone from the Sun" where I thought I was hearing multitracked lines of guitar feedback, but then realized one of them was Minton screaming.

Awesome :)

Knew it wouldn't be anything like the awful Kronos plays Hendrix thing
