:) Slack Motherfucker came out in 1990? Huh. I would have probably guessed a couple years later if asked. Such a great song.

I think I spent more time listening to the radio in 1990 than in any other year. I love all these tracks, might have to make a CD-R or Youtube playlist or something.

there are some better songs but i never heard kyper's "tic-tac-toe" until very recently so i just want to give it a shout out

Oooh... forgot "Metropolis" by the Church, but I think someone mentioned that above. Great track.

thank providence for this thread -- i am scanning photos from a 1990 yearbook, and this is just the soundtrack i need to figure out which pictures are the best.

Metropolis is one of my very favorites. That's why I piped up.

urban dance squad's "deeper shade of soul" kinda ruled my 1990

bb, Friday, 27 July 2012 17:23 (eleven years ago) link

I love this year so hard.. I wish I could count nirvana "In Bloom" for this.. it was on a sub pop VHS that came out in 1990..

if that doesn't count I'll have to go with "poison."

billstevejim, Saturday, 28 July 2012 00:20 (eleven years ago) link

considering that amerikkka's most wanted came out this year, there's no question to me about the best 10 or so songs

"jealousy" by pet shop boys another one i loved at the time. i mean i still love just don't hear it like i heard it then. i had to check to make sure it was 1990 and it was one of those cases where the album came out in 1990 but the single (which was different than the album version) came out in 1991. i think i've got that straight. come to think of it, "so hard" and "being boring" would be on any 1990 list i made.

As Ned mentioned earlier, My Bloody Valentine's "Soon" is the best song ever recorded, and so it's definitely the best thing to come out in 1990.

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 2 August 2012 23:32 (eleven years ago) link

after Janet Jackson's "Escapade."

I wish there was a radio format that only played pop music from 1989 to 1991.. i have a spotify playlist for this but radio is more unpredictable.

billstevejim, Friday, 3 August 2012 16:12 (eleven years ago) link

as long as Calloway's "I Wanna Be Rich" isn't on that list.

I always figured "So Close" by Hall & Oates was a higher charting song but it's not in that hot 100 list.

are we at the point when we can just post songs that haven't been mentioned yet, even if they're not the best song of 1990?

billstevejim, Friday, 3 August 2012 16:22 (eleven years ago) link

I have the "Suicide Blonde" cassingle.

I always figured "So Close" by Hall & Oates was a higher charting song but it's not in that hot 100 list.

it hit #11 (their last top 40 hit) and my local radio station played it a lot into 1991.

(the version I prefer beefed up up by Jon Bon Jovi, of course)

Happy Mondays "Step On"
Mother Love Bone "Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns"
Guns N Roses "Civil War" (i forget why this is technically 1990)
LL Cool J "Around The way Girl" (this was on the radio a lot more in '91 but album version is '90)
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Show Me Your Soul" (pretty woman soundtrack)
Don Henley "The Heart Of The Matter" (guilty pleasure)
Technotronic "Get Up (Before The Night Is Over)"

billstevejim, Friday, 3 August 2012 16:29 (eleven years ago) link

the don henley song has a mike campbell co-write credit like "the boys of summer" so no big deal

billstevejim, Friday, 3 August 2012 16:31 (eleven years ago) link

not a bad song but I prefer "The Last Worthless Evening"
