Electronic music has been around for awhile. William Orbit was making a name for himself on the dance music scene for more than a decade before becoming known to audiences worldwide for his work on Madonna’s 1998 album Ray Of Light. Dutch DJ Tiësto has been performing since the mid 1980s

As hilarious and awful as that article is, I actually find it quite sweet in a naive sort of way that, in this era when everyone can be an expert with a few clicks from google, that someone in a national news organ will actually admit to never even having heard of Larry Levan or Jellybean Benitez or, really, *anyone*. It's oddly refreshing. Pathetic and ill-researched, but a rarity in a post-Internet world.

White Chocolate Cheesecake, Tuesday, 26 June 2012 20:25 (seven years ago) link

I've never heard of Jellybean Benitez, but my solipsism is my shtick by this point.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 26 June 2012 20:32 (seven years ago) link

I'm sure lots of people have never heard of him, but I guess I'm sheltered if I find it a rarity that someone would proclaim their ignorance of the subject they were covering quite so loudly?

White Chocolate Cheesecake, Tuesday, 26 June 2012 20:35 (seven years ago) link

I guess I hang out with too many music nerds and instant Wikipedia experts, I forget that's such a smell subset of the world.

The comments are angry!

This article is a bit bizarre. There were a number of women on that DJ mag list before it was taken over by the very commercial 'EDM'. There was Sister Bliss, Mrs. Woods and Miss Kittin. If the writer, Ms. Locker, did some research (isn't that what you are supposed to do when you write an article) there is a significant number of women in this list: http://www.residentadvisor.net... . Do the names Nina Kravitz, Maya Jane Coles, Ellen Allien, Magda ring a bell? No, because the writer didn't do any such research. To write an article about the rise of the dj without mentioning the names Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, Derrick May is ludicrous to say the least. Terrible.

well if i were to play devil's advocate i might say, i guess, that only three of those tracks are in the current top 30, ie that most of the time cream of the crop gets to be the cream of the crop by virtue of being at least *somewhat* distinctive, current #1 being a fitting example (and kinda great actually!)... but honestly - i check for this stuff regularly, a staggering amount of it really IS appalingly lazy, even the 'somewhat distinctive' tracks follow the same trance breakdown/electro bosh/trance breakdown/electro bosh template ad nauseam, so pointing and laughing is completely fine by me

Pretty sure that a lot of this is singers writing toplines, accepting £200 without an agreement on contract or writing credits and then getting pissy when it eventually becomes a hit.

"The producers are not all necessarily choosing to be rogues, unfair and dishonest," says Lucas. "Some are just ignorant regarding how the industry works."

Working without a contract and accepting payments seems pretty ignorant regarding how the industry works.

owenf, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 10:22 (six years ago) link

Although there are some pretty underhand tactics used, especially in the language used in correspondence, to get these toplines from people on the cheap/free.

i think i know what you're getting at matt, i think it's a lot of high school and college word of mouth. like, there are all these acts that a huuuuge on the festival scene and sell out big venues here, that never even get mentioned on what i think of the main sites that cover electronic music. it's the new jam bands.

ebm is front 242 etc
edm is like "electronica", refers to more of the phenomenon than tbe music itself.

Moodles, Thursday, 7 November 2013 22:27 (six years ago) link

I have actually listened to "EDM" based on posts I see from high school aged graffiti bloggers -- this is stuff like Deadmau5, Kaskade, skrillex, essentially "big room" house that's influenced by Daft Punk, progressive trance like Sasha, electrohouse. But a lot of it also includes dubstep, trap, and stuff I would just call pop music. I've come around a bit on the description itself, because in practice it appears just to mean dance music that despite being popular still takes on the air of being underground. It helps that it doesn't actually appear on the radio (or whatever it is people use as radios now), but I doubt that will remain so for long, since the backing track of your average Lady Gaga song could easily be an EDM anthem if you made it 7 minutes instead of 3.

Just looked up the wiki entry, and interestingly the reference stuff like chemical brothers, moby, fatboy slim as being antecedents of this stuff, and to my ears, that's pretty accurate. All-purpose dance music for young people that isn't so over-the-top poppy or dumbed-down that you can't still feel rebellious listening/dancing to it.

Dominique, Thursday, 7 November 2013 23:55 (six years ago) link

I don't really buy Ital's assertion that there isn't a continuum between underground dance music and mainstream EDM. A few months ago I djed a queer party in an unofficial space where I opened for Miracles Club, who come out of the exact same scene as Ital. At other instances of this same underground party I hung out with Astronomar, who gets played by Skrillex and Diplo. That's not six degrees of separation, that's two.

Siegbran, Friday, 16 January 2015 13:04 (five years ago) link

I'm sort of intrigued as to how one goes about becoming a massive EDM DJ anyway, the first you hear of most of these guys is when they are already huge enough to be guaranteed draw at festivals. People like Skrillex appear to go from being nobodies to absolutely gigantic within about 30 seconds but at least that's off the back of releasing some records, whereas I genuinely have no idea how you go about becoming Steve Aoki.

Mostly just proud of how far SOPHIE’s come to be the example of pure innocent groundbreaking dance music in contrast to the Sanders set, as opposed to if this had happened in 2015 or so wherein we’d have to endure a paragraph’s worth of Sherburne attempting to tie this all together into a thesis about “ironic capitalism” or whatever

You can't see it but I had an epiphany (Champiness), Tuesday, 2 April 2019 05:35 (one year ago) link

The problem with hot takes like this is that this phenomenon isn’t new, these lamentations that EDM is ‘too commercial these days’ have been going on since the 80s. Nobody expects good music at some corporate festival in Miami for rich kids, that’s not what these events are for. 25 years ago novelty tunes like Smurf House were in the charts, at the same time that Basic Channel and Eye-Q were active.

Also holding up the appearance of SOPHIE as supposedly raising the credentials/relevance of this festival is an odd take - I mean clubs like Tresor, Shoom or the Paradise Garage a did not need to sandwich a pop act like Bananarama or Ace Of Base between their DJs to be relevant.
