Taking Sides - Sisqo 'Thong Song' vs Nelly 'Hot In herre'

i prefer Thong Song because i chuckle at its operatic theme and the way it goes all epic towards the end even tho its just a dumb song about a dumb item of women's bathing garmentia, whereas Nelly's just exclaiming about the squalid condition of the room he's in in order to get girls to get their kit off over an assembly line Neptunes production...OR IS HE???

blueski, Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

if this is "assembly line", then god bless 'oo mistah ford, etc.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thong Song = UTTER AND TOTAL SHIT WITH NO REDEEMING QUALITIES.

Hot In Here = COMPLETE CLASSIC!

It is an insult to even compare the two.

When we were on tour during the summer, we kept hearing Hot In Here on the radio all the time. Our bassist reckoned that the singer sounded like Peter Gabriel. I just liked the backing singer who endlessly repeats in bored voice "I am getting so hot, I wanna take my clothes off". We had no idea who it was, until one day, after they played it on Radio 1, the DJ announced "well, that was the new Coldplay single." Best damn Coldplay single ever!

kate, Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

I know no song called Hot In Here. I know that Thong Song kiks Hot In Herre in the ass

vic (vicc13), Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

deliberately knockin down the Nelly track i was...but however dope the Neptunes productions generally are i cant help but ponder over how they keep churning so many out, many of which using the same techniques...just how do they do it? i used to think Puff Daddy was just the Pete Waterman of 'urban' but these guys, along with Dr Dre, have proven even more prolific - is that good or bad? dam, deviating from thread subject now

blueski, Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

its basically the minimalism of their productions i guess, it seems that all Neptunes works could be written using just a modicum of equipment - one synth, an SH101 or Bass-station, an 808... then again they did some more dramatic stuff for Kelis and they did use acoustic instruments for the NERD album, might be nice if they could do more ludicrious and grandiose affairs like Thong Song instead of the common stilted beats and bass notes formula...still lovin that Beenie & Janet track tho

blueski, Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

my opinion is the complete opposite of kates...i hate nelly, the only song that iritates me more than hot in herre (does anyone know the reason for the extra r by the way?)is fucking ride with me...
the thong song,on the other hand,is quality, the over the top epic carry on is brilliant...

robin (robin), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

amen brutha...

blueski, Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thong Song all the way.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

ps Kate that sort of remark is why I now sort-of hate Mark Radcliffe

robin carmody (robin carmody), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

no i'm totally with Kate on this...

thong song is ass...

Hot in herre is great

Slave 4 U is better than both

geeg, Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

does anyone know the reason for the extra r by the way?
Nelly wrote it that way and everybody was too embarrassed to say anything...

_deleted to protect the innocent_ (eofor), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

the extra r appears to be a pun of sorts stating that not only is it hot in HERE, but its also hot in HER, by which i assume Nelly is referring to the internal body temperature of the frisky young lass he is instructing to undress...or he could be describing how his dunder feels as it inches its way up her holiest of holies - yikes!

blueski, Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ew! No the extra "R" is for pronunciation purposes. He's from St. Louis.

This is a tough one - my instinct is to say "Hot In Herre", but that's probably because it's more recent and thus more lovable. In many senses "Hot In Herre" is the "The Thong Song" for '02.

A point in Nelly's favour: girls seem to like "Hot In Herre" more than they like "The Thong Song" - as both songs are *designed* for dancing with large groups of girls, one could argue that "Hot In Herre" fulfills its aims more successfully. I suspect it's just that Nelly's brand of chauvinism is easier for women to assimilate.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

i pick the thong song because of how it entered my consciousness. before i had ever heard the song, (but i knew of its existence and the general idea) i saw this thing on mtv where da brat said "i don't be wearin that thong tha thong thong thong" and it made me laugh. when i heard the real song it was a bit of a letdown.

ron (ron), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Picking based on the videos, it has to be the Nelly song. Not that I can really remember it, but the thong song video wasn't that good.

lyra (lyra), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

both songs are *designed* for dancing with large groups of girls

Y'know, I like to put on a smoking jacket and sit in my library with a nice Cabernet and listen to them on my Bose wave radio.

Actually, while both are stupendous, I give the edge to the giddy breathlessness of "Thong Song". "Pumps and a bump..bump, bump, thighs like wha..wha wha, baby move your butt, bu, bu...I think I' sing it again!" etc.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Hot in Herre" wins this sooo easy, and I'm not even one of it's 'single of the year' proponents.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 20 September 2002 02:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have to go with Nelly on this one. Always thought "Thong Song" was way overrated, a snigger without justification (musically).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 September 2002 03:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

The only thing I found amusing was just how excited and dramatic he would get over a thong.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 20 September 2002 06:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

It would've been funnier if it had been the "Sock Song" and Sisqo was having a nervous breakdown over a glimpe of ankle.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 20 September 2002 06:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

you can sort of imagine louis armstrong singing that on some bootleg 78...back when they wore those full length bathing suits and such.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 20 September 2002 06:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

chalk one up for 'thong song'. btw, have you heard the new justin timberlake produced by neptunes and featuring the clipse? woah, the neps take it up another notch on this one. makes their recent stuff sound like they've been treading water.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 September 2002 07:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Love 'em both but Hot In Herre has spawned the bigger series of jokes so it's better.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 07:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Misinterpreting Hot in Herre's lyrics is more fun too.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 20 September 2002 08:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

Let's put it this way:

Girls in clubs are more likely to take off all their clothes for Nelly then they are to put on some thongs for Sisqo.

I'm no fan of Nelly, but I doubt he could ever be as irritating as that backflipping jackass Sisqo.

My name is Kenny, Friday, 20 September 2002 13:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

like them both, but it's got to be sisqo - i like his anguish at the thought that he might not see that thong

adam b (adam b), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm really not a thong fan myself, but the beat was certainly more peppy.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 20 September 2002 14:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

thong song all the way. "baby make yr booty go dinna, dinna". sisqo one-handedly cartwheels all over nelly.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 21 September 2002 04:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Herre looks like the German word Herr, so maybe Nelly likes it in some guy's arse. Thong Song wins for that key change.

Damian (Damian), Saturday, 21 September 2002 09:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

Of course "Baby Got Back" beats them both...

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Saturday, 21 September 2002 14:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

um, has anyone been in a club (like one where people like to partay!) when thong song was a big single? if only for that, thong song. also, when you compare the two artists (5 ft tall silver haired sensitive dying for validation vs handsome, confident former minor league baseball player), the choice is clear. nelly should be in a remake of bull durham

boxcubed (boxcubed), Saturday, 21 September 2002 17:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm confused: I thought Nelly and Sisqo were the same person.

Pete Scholtes, Saturday, 21 September 2002 20:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

well its understandable, what with them both being black eh what?

sigh

seven months pass...
I searched for this because today I am starting to believe that Thong Song is one of the best songs ever recorded. I think I need some kind of ILM electro-shock therapy. I don't mean this in a Calum "yeah it's all about the booty" way. It's just such an infectious, almost manic song, and yeah, that epic climax...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 10:31 (twenty years ago) link

well exactly, i hated it at first but eventually it can force you to tolerate and then respect - on the subject of Sisqo i quite liked that recent Dru Hill track 'If I Could' too...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 11:06 (twenty years ago) link

Are Dru Hill meant to be a boy band? Cos they is well ugly, innit?

If by "aged surprisingly well", you mean "aged like a used diaper from a baby with colic left in the sun", then yes.

hot in here is crap. Thong Song is fun for its novelty value...the opening strings which sound oddly like "Eleanor Rigby".

Hot in Herre is an all-girl summer camp jam.

Kath, Saturday, 19 July 2008 16:44 (fifteen years ago) link

In many senses "Hot In Herre" is the "The Thong Song" for '02.

Every year of the 00s has had its Thong Song - discuss.

sort of amazing how many big 2002 hits that i'd enjoyed at the time i never ever wanna hear again now. 'hot in herre' chief among them.

I can listen to "Thong Song" without getting cramps and screaming "PLEASE GET ME OUT OF HERE!" so it has to be "Thong Song" then.

The original beat had the Wes Montgomery cover of Eleanor Rigby as the strings sample:

I thought it was actually sampled...a friend of mine has been doing a cover medley of Thong Song + Eleanor Rigby for years.

Yeah, when I first heard Thong Song, I laughed because it sounded like Eleanor Rigby and was a po-faced intense tune about something that goes up yr butt
