It was the fearful night of December 8th.He was returning home from the studio late.He had perseptively known that it wouldn't be nice.Because in 1980, he paid the price

And "monkey on a string." Okay, I just read the lyrics to What Would You Say. They just seem like a bunch of non sequiturs strung together. Yeah, they're stupid, but they're delivered in a marble-mouth style where I don't immediately discern their stupidity (and I'm never going to hear the song enough times for them to sink in.)

It was an unholy day in Spring,Nobody had suspected a thing,Although, the pope had been sick for many days,He appeared at windows, his eyes were glazed
He prayed alot, mostly to godBut he was old, like Paul Weller, a modHe played soccer, in his youth, in goals,But he could not save himself, the bell tolled
Pope John Paul, why did you dieYou were head of the catholic churchand now a guywho is a nazi iswhat a sad and sorry and sickening occurrencewhat a sad and sorry and sickening occurrence

You wanted to station agents on his bumpers and sideboards. He refused. Do you know why I think he refused? I think he refused because he had a death wish. He talked all the time about being assassinated. His favorite poem was 'I Have a Rendezvous with Death'... which is not a good poem. I think he wanted to die. He had perceptively known that it wouldn't be nice. Because in 1963, he paid the price. But what do you think?

Shit, I only knew the Cranberries' radio singles. I guess that's just as well - compared to the above, "Zombie" now seems like a paragon of restraint.
― wolf cola, everyone (thewufs), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 18:51 (twelve years ago) link
i kind of love "zombie", the guitars, the blissed-out drift, dolores' vocals, the soaring chorus. the words are absolutely hideous, should be unforgivable, but i don't care much about them for some reason. i find it easy enough to tune the verses out and enjoy singing along w the wonderfully ridiculous chorus.
― Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 19:38 (twelve years ago) link
"what would you say", otoh, is completely boring and awful. no riveting chorus, no ocean guitars, just bad unfunky funk.
― Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 19:40 (twelve years ago) link
Zombie is inexcusable but my god "What Would You Say" is so atrocious and such a relic of an awful time for commercial rock/radio music it's mesmerizing. A masterpiece of horribleness.

I LOVE Zombie now because it is fun to shout "With their TANKS and their BOMBS and their BOMBS and their GOOONS".
― Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 20:37 (twelve years ago) link
I agree but sing it as "with their guns & their bombs & their bombs & their bombs & their bombs & their bombs" until I get tired, which is usually a long time

like every other DMB song, if this song just happened to start playing i'd ignore it and go about my business. if i'm the wrong mood or having a bad day, though, overhearing "zombie" will definitely make my mood even worse. so "zombie."

Both of these songs are unquestionably terrible...but I still love them? I kinda listen to Alternative Nation anthems a lot. They overrun my critical faculties with their tanks & their bombs & their bombs & their guns. '90s teenagerdom was a blessing and a curse.

Do you guys hate Zombie so much because you wanted fighting to continue in Northern Ireland? Because the way I remember it was this:
Dolores and them are like "it's been the same old thing since 1918!" The world's like "oh my god, there's Troubles?"And NRA's like "naw, it's cool. we'll shut it down."
