Saw him play back in the late 1980s and still remember his performance as probably the best guitar-playing I've ever seen live. He was monstrous.

I've heard lots of bands big up that first Montrose record as a perfect album. I know Def Leppard, for example, cited it alongside "Back In Black" as this peerless hard rock model that gave them something to aim for. I was always curious, but I don't think I've ever heard a note of Montrose, who (alongside the like of UFO) somehow completely missed me by. Anyway, RIP, guy.

I've only been listening to it for like a year based on an ilm recommendation, but I wish I had picked it up on cassette back when I first started listening to classic rock as a teenager.

I was surprised to learn that he played electric, acoustic, and mandolin on Van Morrison's Tupelo Honey. RIP.

Ronnie Montrose also appears (on one track, and barely audible) on the first album by Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned much is that Montrose also produced Heathen's minor Bay Area thrash classic Breaking the Silence.
