Kruder & Dorfmeister - The K&D Sessions Poll

Some (most?) of these remain absolute classics that have, justifiably, outlived the source in almost every case. some, like the count basic remix, i'd probably not choose to listen to again. although i play and enjoy them if i'm listening to the whole thing.

It's a crying shame they never made an album together.

Jazz Master or Speechless.

Tim F, Friday, 2 March 2012 00:28 (seven years ago) Permalink

speechless, really? cool. jazz master is still a mindfuck of a mix.

trans fatty acid

omar little, Friday, 2 March 2012 00:30 (seven years ago) Permalink

there's amazing generosity on display here from these two. they put a lot of ideas into each mix.

jed_, Friday, 2 March 2012 00:32 (seven years ago) Permalink

trans fatty acid seems to be a great song that i've never heard the original of.

jazz master or bug powder dust

David Holmes - Gone is a really beautiful thing too.

jed_, Friday, 2 March 2012 00:49 (seven years ago) Permalink

The original "Trans Fatty Acid" isn't anywhere near as good as the remix (which would be my other choice I think) - the one time Lamb (in their early career) slipped into trip hop by numbers.

My instinctive choices here strongly support the conclusion that I most like K&D in faux-d&b mode. When they shift down a gear tempo-wise I still like them but not quite as intensely.

Tim F, Friday, 2 March 2012 01:05 (seven years ago) Permalink

You'd expect the bossa vibe on their d&b numbers to make everything a bit too tasteful but instead it's often thrilling.

Tim F, Friday, 2 March 2012 01:07 (seven years ago) Permalink

what i always liked about their jazz master remix was the suggestion that it could fall apart into ambiance at any second, it's a very spacious mix

the late great, Friday, 2 March 2012 01:11 (seven years ago) Permalink

both discs have an amazing flow which is rare for remix compilations.

jed_, Friday, 2 March 2012 01:15 (seven years ago) Permalink

i was going to say, they are masters of dynamics

The real poll: Disc 1 or Disc 2

valleys of your mind (mh), Friday, 2 March 2012 01:59 (seven years ago) Permalink

1) bug powder dub

2) rollin' on chrome

3) sofa rockers

such a great album

the late great, Friday, 2 March 2012 02:37 (seven years ago) Permalink

disc 2 is more subtle, but disc 1 was always my fave

dunno which version to pick tho tbh

ho don't kno I'm bout that skrillex (Pillbox), Friday, 2 March 2012 05:33 (seven years ago) Permalink

always cringed so hard at the bug powder dust lyrics, but they're delivered so well, i couldn't help but sing along. had the whole thing memorized at one point, or at least my interpretation of them, but now i only remember bits and pieces ("on a soul safari with my beatnik peers" ouch).

Totes le Héros (contenderizer), Friday, 2 March 2012 05:52 (seven years ago) Permalink

i like the Burroughs references, but the u are right - all about the delivery. I mostly like the low end on that track, though.

ho don't kno I'm bout that skrillex (Pillbox), Friday, 2 March 2012 05:55 (seven years ago) Permalink

yeah, morricone surf guitar is great, too

Totes le Héros (contenderizer), Friday, 2 March 2012 05:59 (seven years ago) Permalink

actual lyrics, apparently: "I gotta get a typewriter that's sexier" (great!)

what i heard: "I gotta get a tight bite of that sex (ee-uh)"

if my ears hadn't been writing the lyrics, i'd probably have cringed a good deal less

so tell your mother and your sister and your sister's friends...

I haven't listened to this in years, but their "1st of the month" is the most stoned thing ever. It's between that, "east west", or "bug powder dust"

"mama Oliver" by east west, i mean.

Love so many of these. Voting Bug Powder Dub just ahead of Useless. They both feel like benchmark remixes to me.

I have to go with Jazz Master

jed_, Thursday, 8 March 2012 09:39 (seven years ago) Permalink

Annoyed this morning because I thought I'd copied this to my iPhone but I did not. Being annoyed is so un-K&D Sessions, too.

Rollin' on Chrome over Bug Powder Dust

Gonna have to snap out some Fila B now.

Rockers to Rockers is a great album, Mish Mash was pretty weak in comparison. I assume you bought Mish Mash. Get this one: http://www.discogs.com/Rockers-Hi-Fi-Rockers-To-Rockers/master/39792

yeah, it was mish mash. liked "going under" and the delivery of the line "now i delivah", but that's about it. will check the previous

It's funny how ten years ago this sounded dated to me in the worst way and now it sounds dated to me in the best way

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 7 January 2019 22:13 (five months ago) Permalink

I kind of regret selling my OG vinyl copy since the repress has a bunch of different songs, but I did get $300 for it and a couple of the tracks had scratches that caused skipping. The K&D DJ Kicks is one of my favorite artifacts from the 90s though.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 7 January 2019 22:18 (five months ago) Permalink

if it's the dark paranoid version on disc 2, I agree

brimstead, Monday, 7 January 2019 22:23 (five months ago) Permalink

xp to qualmsley

brimstead, Monday, 7 January 2019 22:23 (five months ago) Permalink

I have always found this sounded funny. Haven't listened in ages to it. There was an air of coolness around them which i could never take seriously.

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Monday, 7 January 2019 22:24 (five months ago) Permalink

Would've voted for the bone thugs

brimstead, Monday, 7 January 2019 22:24 (five months ago) Permalink

The original "Trans Fatty Acid" isn't anywhere near as good as the remix (which would be my other choice I think) - the one time Lamb (in their early career) slipped into trip hop by numbers.

Does this sound like opposite world to anyone else? Lamb's original is more akin to the claustrophobic paranoia of Tricky's "Strugglin'" than, say, something off of Dummy (which would be the likelier trip hop template from the time).

Siouxie Sioux Vide (Leee), Tuesday, 8 January 2019 23:24 (five months ago) Permalink

any time I hear more than a couple Depeche Mode remixes on shuffle I remember the one on this mix and end up listening to the full k&d sessions

mh, Wednesday, 9 January 2019 01:32 (five months ago) Permalink

two weeks pass...

the depeche mode mix is boring imo. could just be that i don't like depeche mode.

'gotta jazz' deserved a vote

this still hits some serene highs but parts are also kinda beige. i remember feeling the same way when i first bought it.
