Telex S/D

just noticed we never had a thread dedicated to the "3rd prong" of the Kraftwerk/YMO triangle. too bad because I'm listening to the album Neurovision right now and it strikes me as being as good as any of the klassic Kraftwerk albums! (of course, the bonus tracks factor in a lot to that, including the English-language stuff I sequenced in)

still, I'm surprised they don't get talked about much around here. "Moskow Diskow" is an all time classic.

SEARCH: Looking for Saint Tropez, Neurovision, "Temporary Chicken"
DESTROY: Wonderful World, barf

you ??

Last mentioned on the Lio thread iirc - who else did they produce?

there's a list here:

I forgot to mention, though I don't think Sex is as good an album as the first two, the lyrics (written by Sparks!) are all totally classic. Even better than normal Sparks lyrics! I wish they'd collaborated more since they seemed to be on the same wavelength.

Love this one:

Moskow Diskow definitely classic, St. Tropez good too. Lio singles they produced are really good, too ... Sage Comme une Image, etc.

I assume most people have seen their Eurovision performance; if you haven't, you're in for a treat:

POX:

Moscow Diskow
Pakmovast
We Are All Getting Old
Dance to the Music
B-Sides (seriously incredible early technopop tune)
Lakele (reminds me of Hosono's tropical/electro period, very addictive)
Soul Waves (version 1)
Dream-O-Mat
Temporary Chicken
Spike Jones (these last two are seriously bizarre and not for everyone)

yeah it's the horn noise that's really classic. but if you like the tune check out "We Are All Getting Old" which is kind of the same thing

i'm a sucker for electronic tracks with a shuffle-y compound time rhythm

also didn't know that "my time" was a cover of this:

Yes! I didn't know the Telex version until very recently, but the Ann Steel LP is all-time, and you should get the vinyl re-issue now now now.

I usually get away with playing Brainwash in DJ sets... sounds a bit LCDesque.

Doran, I think you may have put Brainwash on an LCD thread a couple of years ago (maybe when This Is Happening came out?) Anyway I fell in love with it and bought the first three albums not long after. Neurovision is easily my favourite of those three, it's solid all the way through. I bought Looney Tunes too a bit later on but didn't enjoy it at all.

Glad to be of service! Fair play to Murphy for having great taste in music etc. but, yeah, you can hear so much of what he was trying to do in that song.

Doran, Saturday, 9 March 2013 07:32 (eleven years ago) link

Neurovision is such an excellent album, especially if you're getting the one with bonus tracks

five years pass...

apparently Michael Jackson once said he got the inspiration for "Billie Jean" after hearing a "European electronic group on the radio". any chance this was "Moskow Diskow"? it's got the same chords...

Well-spotted!
(But if I had to guess, it would be "Der Kommisar".)

three years pass...

there's a line in "My Future" that goes something like "when my dreams forget my memories, it's too bad" and for it really makes me laugh because the first half of that is such a heavy concept

appears to be out now. thinking about buying it but I'm curious what the new mixes sound like. The ones on "This is Telex" (the 2xLP released a couple years ago) were really nice.

okay I wound up getting it. Amazon was using dynamic pricing for this which kept causing the price to consistently fall and then suddenly jump back up again, so I wound up nabbing it for $120-something. its now $160 so I feel like I got a deal. anyay I can't say enough about these new mixes - I've only got originals of 2 of the LPs but these sound almost like certain parts were re-recorded. but with the same analogue sounds. plus some new bits I am pretty sure weren't on the originals. it's almost too good - the first album does not sound like 1978, if it sounded like this back then it would've blown Man-Machine out of the water. amusingly enough the album with the most changes is the comeback from 2006 that no one heard.
