LCD could not successfully reunite Nancy or Pat

police patrol felt the smell of smoke and found that goat burns (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 31 December 2015 14:17 (eight years ago) link

it'll come across pretty sad especially after only 5 years.

They only existed for nine years

oh noes the sublime artistic integrity of lcd soundsystem has been cheapened

probably.tasteful.forever (imago), Thursday, 31 December 2015 14:19 (eight years ago) link

anyway when they split he said they'd play & record again, but he didn't expect to make albums and tour the same songs for 18 months again

glandular lansbury (sic), Thursday, 31 December 2015 14:19 (eight years ago) link

yeah it would be cool if they just became a studio band from here on out, I thought it was the touring that really wore Murphy out

frogbs, Thursday, 31 December 2015 14:22 (eight years ago) link

There's no "if" about the reunion. They're playing a whole bunch of festivals and perhaps other dates in the US and Europe this Spring and Summer, starting with Coachella and running until at least July. Coachella isn't even the only one they're doing in Southern California.

Not that any statement was necessary given how obviously premature and therefore faux was the purported breakup, but anyone who thought it wouldn't happen (or who invested any sort of significance in that MSG show) missed Murphy telling you at the time that it probably would. When he decided he wanted to soundtrack the NYC subway and realized that he needed a lot of money to do it (and a lot of money he's getting), it became a no-brainer.

Not to suggest that there's nothing silly about investing any significance in a TNG Talking Heads knockoff with a more bearish, less bright frontman in the first place

Comprehensive Nuclear Suggest-Ban Treaty (benbbag), Thursday, 31 December 2015 15:26 (eight years ago) link

So this whole thing is to help fund his subway project?

TNG?

Does the fact that it might help fund a fairly-unlikely art project make you feel better about the idea that they're willing to be paid millions of dollars? I'm led to believe it was part of the impetus, or removal of indifference.

They were so sad when we broke up
But now they're mad
That we're not

I suppose I am glad to have them back, but I was a bit bummed their setlists have been pretty much song for song identical since reuniting, including last night at one of the Lollapalooza-related club after shows. I enjoyed it fine, but don't say you're getting the band back together because you have more to say or your work isn't finished or whatever and then hit the clubs and festivals with a set in stone setlist that pretty much feels like an exact continuation of what you were doing for but with less spontaneity. Also, the world weary shtick doesn't quite play as well after you've prematurely reunited. If you want to be back you've got to try a little harder to make it look like it was something you missed, imo. Murphy was good and sounded good, but he sounded most enthusiastic telling everyone that Derrick Carter was DJing downstairs if they really wanted to dance.

I listened to "Never As Tired As When I'm Waking Up" this morning. They should start closing their sets with that instead of "NY I Love You"

If I had to play spot the reference (with a band that all but demands it), I'd say that "Police" song sounds a bit like the Psychedelic Furs (and would sound better with Butler singing).

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 4 May 2017 20:17 (seven years ago) link

a friend pointed out "Call the Police" sounds a bit like this '80s Fleetwood Mac number, which seems like the sort of thing Murphy would quote:

"Call the Police" sounds like LCD meets Bowie's "Heroes" to me - there's even a Berlin reference in it. Love it so far although I wish the ending was a little crazier.

Still need to listen to "American Dream" some more.

yesca, Friday, 5 May 2017 01:12 (seven years ago) link

he sounds like Wayne Coyne but i like it.

piscesx, Friday, 5 May 2017 02:24 (seven years ago) link

To my ears, it sounds like a band that has doubled down on its legacy sound (All My Friends / Heroes / Someone Great). In 2017 it's ehhh.

"Well, there's a full-blown rebellion but you're easy to confuse
By triggered kids and fakers and some questionable views
Oh, call the cops, call the preachers!
Before they let us and they lose"

i'm reaaally hoping that i'm misreading the 'triggered kids' line because that's a pretty meh move for him politically

the song is good imo but whew if he's not gonna get a bit of backlash for that

austinb, Friday, 5 May 2017 03:26 (seven years ago) link

actually, changed my mind: talked to a friend and he pointed out that it's more likely the same lyrical shtick as All My Friends and Dance Yrself Clean, which is the whole "unreliable narrator relating to/critiquing an old guy complaining about the youngsters thing". i guess the ambiguity could still be read as kinda sus, but i'll pull back on getting on some high horse

austinb, Friday, 5 May 2017 04:00 (seven years ago) link

Read the entire lyrics. I'm going to avoid any think piece on this for the rest of my life.

lyrics are not great

I find him very sympathetic, if you're interested in changing your mind perhaps this interview will be of interest:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYCz06bS380

but I mean also just the guy who wrote Someone Great has to be a nice person

niels, Saturday, 6 May 2017 08:13 (seven years ago) link

Call The Police sounds a bit like Oasis or Kasabian by the time it gets to the outro.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Saturday, 6 May 2017 08:32 (seven years ago) link

I've generally been happy with most LCD stuff but let's all acknowledge for a moment that the pre album 12"s, culminating with the besthingever "Yeah", is the real shit.

yesca, Saturday, 6 May 2017 09:32 (seven years ago) link

top 3 tracks are pretty easily Beat Connection/Thrills/Yeah, nothing else he did in the Beat Connection/Yeah sort of mode later really came close

I like the synth tone in Call the Police that's really evocative of YMO's Cue, but unlike when he's done this style in the past, it's not more than the sum of its New Order + "Heroes" parts - this time sounding a ton like Procession

ufo, Saturday, 6 May 2017 11:03 (seven years ago) link

the biggest change in either of these tracks is the way the drums are produced

yesca, Sunday, 7 May 2017 15:08 (seven years ago) link

call the police really grew on me—i think i've settled on really liking how it goes back and forth from romantic to punky, since the bass motorik is always there to keep you grounded

austinb, Sunday, 7 May 2017 15:48 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, that was great. Alas, I saw them on one of last year or so's reunion/club shows, and man, the crowd was so gross I don't think I can handle it again. That's my problem, totally, they were fine otherwise. Maybe the influx of new songs will change the dynamic.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 7 May 2017 16:11 (seven years ago) link

what was gross about the crowd? were they wearing TEVAs?

akm, Sunday, 7 May 2017 16:24 (seven years ago) link

I'm really enjoying Call The Police after that performance. I'm getting massive Ultravox vibes from it, especially the keyboards in the "and we don't waste time with love" part.
