I upload stuff to bandcamp. Older stuff - guitar based sadcore or jangle pop. Newer stuff - more new wave. Most of it is free if you want it.

Some great Kraut-ish jams from Indirect:

(They aren't free/name your price so I won't link them, but Fang Wizard has a fun album from TeenBeat available for download on bandcamp, and there are a couple of great post-punk-type singles by Friends for dirt cheap from the Lucky Number label on the site as well.)

This being the hub for all things Steven R. Smith (formerly of Mirza, Thuja, Hala Straana and solo artist). His latest OLD SKETE is a must-listen for rustic drone types.

And thanks for the kind words WRT The Rowell Incident upthread. There will probably be some more solo synth/drone stuff going up in the nearish future.

I'm listening to the Airs record that I linked to up above as "shoegaze with black metal elements." There is no black metal in this that I can ascertain. So if that scared you off, have no fear – this is pretty straight up staring at footwear.

i didn't find the sample song scary at all, but maybe the rest is terrifying. i'll find out soon.

La Lechera, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:30 (twelve years ago) link

Sounds more like soothing ambient than scary to me. I, being Scott Walker, will not be associated with such half-witted muzak. They could have at least punched some pig meat, you know, to show they mean it.

future debts collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:31 (twelve years ago) link

That kind of overpowering, claustrophobic drone always gets to me for some reason.

Also the little fluttering wings. Do not want.

Gamera died for our sins (J3ff T.), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:36 (twelve years ago) link

It seems to lean a lot on effects, like the wind blowing over an icy polar landscape. But I do like it, yes.

future debts collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:37 (twelve years ago) link

Album gets better along the way, but it still sounds fairly sad-ambient-cliché to be honest

future debts collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:44 (twelve years ago) link

I don't know man, are you listening to ambient for innovation and excitement? Because I think you might have the wrong genre for that.

Gamera died for our sins (J3ff T.), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:46 (twelve years ago) link

Anyway, I've been to Indio, if I lived there I would probably be making music that sounded like that.

Gamera died for our sins (J3ff T.), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:49 (twelve years ago) link

would you find this more appealing if it were called music for butterflies? they're just moths with prettier clothes.

La Lechera, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:50 (twelve years ago) link

I'm an ambient man, have been so for 10+ years. The opposite of "innovation and excitement" - which is what I guess you are getting at in your definition of ambient - does not make for (good) ambient, per sé. At least not in my book. Ambient can be unsettling, unnerving as anything else. Ambient itself shines all around the spectrum of what most people call "ambient". From great snoozer-ambient to unsettling, scary ambient.

future debts collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:56 (twelve years ago) link

Butterflies don't eat your clothes. At least I don't think they do. Although that would explain a lot…

Gamera died for our sins (J3ff T.), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:56 (twelve years ago) link

I think moths wear their outfits with pride, and rightfully so

future debts collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:57 (twelve years ago) link

Sorry man, cheap joke. I've just recently started getting into ambient, and I dig it a lot, but I guess I have trouble recognizing when ambient is cliché. I'm still at the stage with that genre where my critical insight basically comes down to "I like this" or "I don't like this."

oh i should have mentioned this...my friend's band Dallas Orbiter

http://www.dallasorbiter.com/

did a thing in 2011, where they released a free digital "single" each month...a-side was new original, b-side was a cover

i think they have a unique sounds...i dunno, kinda of an odd yet poppy space rock...like somewhere between a less-chopsy walt mink and can or something?

the originals are all great and the cover selections are cool and diverse, include songs by Blue Oyster Cult, Al Stewart, Brian Eno, an unreleased song by a former member of Punchdrunk (Punchdrunk's rhythm section became the original Hold Steady rhythm section), Glen Campbell, Baader Meinhoff, Love & Rockets, John Cooper Clarke, Bombay Sweets, The Zombies
