The R Kelly track feels totally out of place to me. Makes sense to get it out of the way, but sort of an awful way to start after the Big Rube intro. And I like the track.

heiswagger (rennavate), Monday, 23 April 2012 22:39 (eleven years ago) link

the kells track has grown on me -- before hearing it i was seeing delusions of something on the level of "i'ma flirt" or w/e, but i'm okay w/ it being a better "booty wurk"

i'm partial to the garbled spaceballads, but some of the bangers really kill ("permanent scar" and the one w/ snoop are the only ones i skip)

<3 'neva end'

johnny crunch, Monday, 23 April 2012 23:18 (eleven years ago) link

my favs are "turn on the lights," "truth gonna hurt you" and "straight up"

J0rdan S., Monday, 23 April 2012 23:20 (eleven years ago) link

oh and "you deserve it" obv

J0rdan S., Monday, 23 April 2012 23:20 (eleven years ago) link

Has anyone pointed out the sheer audacity of immediately following the Big Rube track with the Kells track yet? The man seeks out contradiction and conflict.

longneck, Monday, 23 April 2012 23:22 (eleven years ago) link

That's such a power move. People seem to hate it though. Too confusing.

man down (D-40), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 01:03 (eleven years ago) link

yeah kells song is dope, although maybe i partly like it because it's been a while since he had a goofy uptempo joint like that

boy, was that Dan Fielding hungry for some cake! (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 02:44 (eleven years ago) link

i watched a few minutes of The Voice but instead what i saw was Cee-Lo in a long black wig singing "Dancing In The Street"

Poor Turrican (some dude), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 02:59 (eleven years ago) link

fuck you cee-lo

hologram ned raggett (The Reverend), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 03:53 (eleven years ago) link

i'm almost kind of impressed that that was as garbage as anyone could possibly imagine

Poor Turrican (some dude), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 03:58 (eleven years ago) link

man what the teetotal fuck

1) what is this i can't even
2) i guess the light up grills are kinda cool?
3) maybe like all the guys got real paid for this at least?
4) seriously what is this i can't even

boy, was that Dan Fielding hungry for some cake! (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 04:12 (eleven years ago) link

they've reunited like a gazillion times already so at least that's not what this is i guess

boy, was that Dan Fielding hungry for some cake! (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 04:13 (eleven years ago) link

well i mean this is the run up for their first album w/ the original lineup in 10+ years

Poor Turrican (some dude), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 04:18 (eleven years ago) link

yeah but in theory that's what the 3am times square show I saw them do in 2009 was supposed to be for too

boy, was that Dan Fielding hungry for some cake! (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 04:20 (eleven years ago) link

one of the most hilarious parts of the video is how much the light-up grill fucks up cee-lo's diction

hologram ned raggett (The Reverend), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 04:21 (eleven years ago) link

My wife loved it \O_o/

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 04:23 (eleven years ago) link

you might've noticed that cee-lo is much much much more famous now than he was in '09 and there's a lot of clamoring to release whatever project he wants to work on, and that this performance was on a highly rated television show (that cee-lo stars in) xpost

Poor Turrican (some dude), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 04:25 (eleven years ago) link

I was laughing so hard and she was like "what... I think its kind of awesome, you're so weird"

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 04:25 (eleven years ago) link

it's hysterical because they were so clearly trying to be everything to everyone and ended up with something that neither the old goodie fans nor the new cee-lo solo fans could possibly embrace

Poor Turrican (some dude), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 04:27 (eleven years ago) link

So true.

the upside is that i can sorta square myself with this being the bizarro world al is talking about and still hope the album will have some worthwhile music

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 April 2012 17:56 (eleven years ago) link

re: noz's review, it is very good, i think his conclusion i probably shift in a different direction on, though.

As much as his early tracks benefitted from the freedom that hip-hop offers, he now seems burdened by its conventions. The purist will listen to this and imagine how much better it would be if Future tried to rap more. The more adventurous listener might wonder what he could accomplish if he broke free of his genre's gravitational pull entirely.

maybe i agree w/ this, or maybe i disagree -- but i think its that tension that energizes it, but shudder at the idea of him leaving rap behind entirely? that its grounding in rap convention charges it & gives it a root-edness that creates a necessary tension ... like 'turn on the lights' transcends rap completely, and is stronger for it, but 'permanent scar' is one of my favorite tracks on the record despite being completely about some of the formal defining rap conventions-- that 'turn on the lights' is that much more powerful b/c of its context & surroundings

so i agree w/ him in that, it does make you wonder what it would be like if he broke free, but i think i disagree that it would actually result in better music -- its more of a philosophical question to me, or something, rather than a practical one

man down (D-40), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 18:15 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, great points. It's him on the fringes of rap music, still engaging with rap conventions but really engaging with and stretching those conventions. i agree if he forgoes them, i would be very worried.
