I suppose you could listen to a different band, but what's the point?

(There might be one of these in the archives already. I enjoy Silver Jews, although I can think of several points to listening to someone else most of the time.)

The new New Radiant Storm King album is really good... features former Jews Peyton P. Pinkerton & Matt Hunter. I forget the name but there's life Jackets on the cover.

Your statement is not false, but seems to imply that New Radiant Storm King is some sort of Jews side project. Peyton and MHunter were NRSK before playing with Dave Berman. (Western Mass represent!)

NRSK is pretty good Sonic Youth-derived stuff. Haven't heard the new record (can't find it in record stores and haven't trolled for it online!), but Hurricane Necklace is one of those great albums no one ever talks about. It was on the (I think defunct) Grass label, so may be out-of-print.

Also, Peyton does some fairly awesome jangle-pop guitar work with the Pernice Brothers.

My very favorite S. Jews song is "Old New York," from a split single with NRSK. It's a tossed-off piece of drunken buffoonery, but I love it: "Theatre in the round/Hey! stop by Howard Johnson's/Martinis on the house/You might even meet Mick Ronson/You never know who might show up/At the bar you decide to blow up/In New York." (That might seem all that impressive on a computer screen, but is precious as a traded-off Berman/Malkmus vocal line.)

i always loved the line about Michelle and "the towers in her mind" - "some women lie down with killers - my baby's not that kind"

Last I heard DCB moved to Cali and is writing screenplays. That’s been going on for a year or so.

just learned this week that the "laughed when I left, but in the end you only hurt yourself" line from How to Rent a Room was from a Sam Cooke song.

So we've got Purple Mountains now.

Walked to a record store today and bought a copy despite not owning a record player or having any friends that do. But I heard it on Downhill Swing. So, the song's about getting old, losing friends, and struggling with depression. References to long cross-country drives alone which seem to match up with some of the photos DCB's posted to his twitter recently. Not a theme I can personally get too excited about, but I trust the guy knows what he's doing and I suspect he's putting those feelings out there as a way offer a connection with anyone who might be dealing with the same stuff.

The music itself didn't do a whole lot for me, but I'm drifting away from indie rock these days anyway.
