Hypothetical Scenario: In the Life of Chris Gaines? Possible innovation that failed?

What would've been the impact if Garth Brooks In the Life of Chris Gaines had actually been a critical/artistic success? Would there have a bunch of Country singers who suddenly developed new alt.personalities (both small 'a' alternative and big 'A' Alternative)?
Side issues: What was your reaction to the very idea of this country-pop cornpone shitkicker trying to morph himself into Eddie Vedder? What was your reaction to hearing the actual record (please, answers only from those who've heard it.)

Subthread...
Taking Sides: Pat Boones "look I'm a metalhead badass" period vs Garth Brook's "Just call me Garthy Ramone" period.
Personally, I'm siding with Garth, because Boones No More Mr. Nice Guy barely worked as camp.

And what if up were down? I mean, there was no possible way a Garth Brroks project would have been a critical success.

I'll take Pat Boone over Garth - because Pat knows he's a wuss.

My dad, a huge Garth Brooks fan, bought the album. I gotta say, the best moments on that album are when he sounds like the Wallflowers. And that's all I have to say about that.

A similar question could be posed about Madonna's acting. Wait, it sucks and she's still doing it.

I do advise all to rent the Lena Wurtmuller/Giancarlo Giannini (sp?) version of Swept Away.

one thing and one thing only to say about Pat Boone:

he wrote a book c.1960 EXPLAINING COMMUNISM TO TEENAGERS!!!

I really really want to see that, but then I am a historian of post-war politics and their mainstream media "interpretations", so I would

Aren't you glad Garth only changed his name to Chris and not to some unpronouncable rune? A squiggle with a cowboy hat and a flava sava!

Robin Carmody: [Pat Boone] wrote a book c.1960 EXPLAINING COMMUNISM TO TEENAGERS!!!
Yep, he said it was dirty, would make you go blind and grow hair on your hands. But beyond that, he was all for it.

To chaki and john: get a room, you two.

I kind of enjoyed Chris Gaines's SNL appearance. He had one song with a falsetto chorus hook ("It's just the way of the giiiirl!" - speaking of Prince) that was pretty damn catchy.

I'd like to take this opportunity to do my part to ensure the legend of Trisha Yearwood's Garth's Breakfast Bowl also lives on:

Ingredients
2 tablespoons butter
8 large eggs
One 16-ounce bag frozen hash browns or Tater Tots, thawed
1 pound pork sausage
1 pound bacon
One 9-ounce package cheese and roasted garlic tortellini
10 ounces sharp Cheddar, grated (about 2 1/2 cups)

Directions
1. In a large skillet, melt the butter and scramble the eggs.
2. In a separate large skillet, cook the hash browns according to package directions.
3. In a third skillet, break up the sausage with a wooden spoon and cook until browned. Remove with a slotted spoon and transfer to a bowl. Cook the bacon in the same skillet until crispy, drain on paper towels, tear into pieces and set aside.
4. Cook the tortellini according to the package directions. Layer a large bowl with hash browns, sausage, bacon, tortellini, eggs and cheese, and serve!
