very little discussion of this album so far, from what i've seen. it's one of the most immediately accessible rock records of the year imo. bedroom eyes is a good example of the disc's sound and aesthetic (it's also a highlight).

dum dum girls also seem to be one of the current bands that's been drawing from the noir-ish side of 50s pop (see also, dirty beaches; shannon & the clams). i hope this is a trend.

I was neutral on their first album, but "He Gets Me High" from their EP a few months ago is one of my favourite songs of the year.

I need to give this another shot, but the first listen revealed it to be pretty pleasant but not too thrilling. Part of that problem is that I've overloaded myself on this sort of stuff over the past year (Vivian Girls, etc). The other part of the problem is that nothing matches the highs of the EP from earlier this year.

I talked to main Dum Dum Dee Dee about the new album here (though I actually don't personally like it as much as this might imply):

She sounds SO MUCH like Chrissie Hynde on the single that it's jarring. The slow one - is it "Coming Down"? - is really, really pretty.

She sounds like Hynde on huge chunks of the new album, actually.

yeah, that's true. i hear some hybrid of the go-gos; the pretenders; and some 50s acts i can't recall by name.

The other thing about that "Coming Down" is that it's the exact chord progression and tempo of "Fade Into You" by Mazzy Star, but it works anyway.

four months pass...

^^ OTM! My brain kept mashing them up when I first heard it. It also sounds a bit like that Venus in Furs song '2HB' off the Velvet Underground sountrack.
I'm liking this album well enough. They remind me a little bit of Long Blondes too.

I love this record. Although for some reason they stashed all their best songs on side 2.

ten years pass...

The other thing about that "Coming Down" is that it's the exact chord progression and tempo of "Fade Into You" by Mazzy Star, but it works anyway.

I'd forgotten about "Coming Down" until hearing it coming from a taproom moments ago! And immediately thought the ubiquitous "Fade Into You" should be swapped out for this. What a song.
