The worst part about freelancing...

Is definitely pitching stories. I loathe it. I'm a person with many ideas (not lately, unfortunately), but framing them in an attractive way is hard work... Can I hear a "hell yeah?" I'm grumpy for this very reason today.

the worst part about freelancing is when the work dries up!!

(hint, hint.)

(also, i've never had to be in a freelancing position where i've had to particularly pitch anything, but yes, it strikes me as essentially demeaning. not as demeaning as working midnight cleanup in a slaughterhouse spraying 180 degree high pressure hoses of chlorine and water for six-eight hours and getting down in the rendering vats to remove a clog and being overcome with hydrogren fumes and possibly dying as your coworkers try to rescue you, mind. but, uh, yeah.)

jess that doesn't sound demeaning, it sounds kind of risky and advanced! now, retail- that's deameaning.

the worst part about freestyling is when you get some other rappers rhyme in your head and you want to just play with a bit of it but you end up spitting like ten bars of his shit

Been there!

Yes, they started repeating "I'm Alan Partridge" last night. The scene where AP tries to pitch visionary ideas like arm-wrestling with Chas and Dave, prison cookery and monkey tennis will probably resemble similar upcoming meeting with myself and Mr Young at the Wire.

Monkey Tennis!

I freaking HATE pitching as well. But guessing from my batting average lately as to how many of my pitches have been greeted enthusiastically, I think I might actually be OK at it.

Which is good, cause I'm gearing up to suggest the NUDE ANDREW SCOTT COVER ISSUE!!! Whooo!!!

You know what I hate about having a real job? HAVING TO HAVE A REAL JOB! Having to sit in a chair in front of a computer 40 hours a week with a boss looking over my shoulder! Doing completely meaningless busy work because there's nothing for me to do! Being completely unqualified to do anything else!
Quit your whining, hippy.

spot the fun logical leaps in nick's post, kids!

Ahh, but Nick... William & Mary makes us qualified for anything!

Seriously though. I still have a day job, Mr. Neek. And it might even be worse than yours.

I always find the worst thing about pitching stories is having them turned down. THAT's demeaning.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 21:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, getting turned down blows. Particularly if you went into great detail in researching the piece before you pitched it.

Thankfully my grumpiness from yesterday has subsided. Strangely, I had all of these opportunities arise at once in the last few days, but a dearth of good ideas arrived simultaneously. Things are looking up, however.

No one wants to publish Recovering Catholics Who Rock.

Guy Oseary won't help me out -- he hasn't returned any of my calls.

That's some shit.

Sometimes it feels like some companies go out of their way to make invoicing as tedious and unaccommodating as possible
