Best Miles Davis Album 1981-1992

No reissues, nothing posthumous (except Doo-Bop, but the label wasn't expecting him to die right before that one came out). Studio and live albums post-reemergence. Does anybody but me like this stuff?

I haven't heard them all but I love Aura.

"Doo-Bop" was a sad way to go out....

seriously, it's the shit. better versions of the big tunes from the studio records, with kenny garrett, foley, ricky wellman, etc

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 17:48 (twelve years ago) link

voted Tutu, though I'm hoping to get to know these albums better this year.

unperson are you going to vote in VOTING AND CAMPAIGNING THREAD FOR ILM POST 1945 BEST JAZZ ALBUMS POLL (Voting closes August 27)

voting closes 11.59pm friday night eastern us time

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 17:49 (twelve years ago) link

and jordan i will check that one out

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 17:50 (twelve years ago) link

Live Around the World is pretty great (and the 20CD Complete Miles Davis at Montreux box is a motherfucker), but it came out in 1996 so it's outside the purview of this poll.

that's not funny. (unperson), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 18:02 (twelve years ago) link

I was gonna vote in the post-45 poll, but it got overwhelming - too many possible nominations, etc., etc.

that's not funny. (unperson), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 18:03 (twelve years ago) link

Aura is the best album here but I've always wondered how involved/engaged Miles was.

gonna check out Live Around the World; Star People & Decoy definitely have some moments

im sure you could make a ballot. You can do an unranked ballot if you find it hard to rank (or even a split ballot where you rank 10 or so then the rest unranked). we only have 20 ballots so far so i'd be very grateful if you could vote. Want the poll to be as good as it can be. it wouldn't be the same without your vote tbh. Same goes for all the ilm jazz guys.

xp

Lemme go have a look at the list of albums.

even though i think we want miles is one of his best live records, just like, pure pocket funk, i may go with tutu

i love all of these records though and you should too

but the performances are '88 - '91! no? fine.

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 19:09 (twelve years ago) link

Probably Aura for me, although I haven't heard half of these, so...

And I'll fess up to actually liking Doo-Bop.

unperson im sure you can still manage a ballot with what is there

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

Doo-Bop is overall pretty meh, but "Mystery" is kinda fantastic.

Gus Van Sant's Gerry Blank (Eric H.), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 22:04 (twelve years ago) link

i kind of like You're Under Arrest -- I'm not gonna say it's an amazing record or anything, but when I listen to it, i dig it.

tylerw, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 22:14 (twelve years ago) link

there are a few worthy tracks on it. I like the live records and Star People. A few tracks on Aura (White in particular is prob. the last great thing he made) are good...the rest is forgettable to awful. No love for Tutu, I never got why people like that one.

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 22:26 (twelve years ago) link

"Tutu" is my favourite Miles album besides "Kind Of Blue", and thus pretty hard to avoid here.

wow that's crazy

No love for Tutu, I never got why people like that one.

it sounds like miles exiting a soft machine

mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 01:43 (twelve years ago) link

but star people is a motherfucker. the first four records here kind of pick up where miles left off in the '70s; it's just more straight-up funk.

mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 01:44 (twelve years ago) link

Re: Star People, the cover used to freak me out a little bit and I love that he was the first to jump the "It Gets Better" bandwagon. Oh, and the guitar work on "Speak" is pretty intense.

You're Under Arrest was the one my dad played maybe the most back then on house-cleaning days, and as a result I am trained to not like it.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

I'm gonna refrain from voting, as I haven't heard or barely remember many of these, but I did relisten to Doo-Bop last week, along with a few other jazz-rap CDs I sorta liked at the time and haven't played since: US3, Buckshot Lefonque and Greg Osby (hey, I do the unpleasant work so you won't have to.) Doo-Bop held up best, imo. (Faint praise...)

t**t, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 14:47 (twelve years ago) link

is the hot spot all miles? i've just heard the bit with john lee hooker. inspired pairing!

tylerw, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 14:50 (twelve years ago) link

Siesta is good too, if you're okay with the Marcus Miller-era Miles sound. Kind of "Sketches of Spain"-ish. Trippy film.

Hey T-Paw, mow my lawn! (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:02 (twelve years ago) link

is the hot spot all miles?-tylerw

nope, not all of it. there're several pieces miles is absent from. a darn good soundtrack all the same.

t**t, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:10 (twelve years ago) link

I voted for The Hot Spot and assumed I'd be alone.

Also surprised Amandla wasn't higher, and really surprised Aura ended up where it did. I don't like that record much at all, myself.

that's not funny. (unperson), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:58 (twelve years ago) link

unfunnily enough, i pretty much agree with (unperson) regarding Amandla and Aura.

recently-released archival live show from 1991 merci miles! live at vienne is really amazing

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Sunday, 25 July 2021 08:43 (two years ago) link

I would've voted for Aura. Easily the best Miles Davis album of this era IMHO though it probably says something that it was conceived and spearheaded by someone else albeit with Miles in mind.

birdistheword, Sunday, 25 July 2021 17:24 (two years ago) link

Amandla is really dope. Might have voted for it if i saw this thread

The whole 20CD box? I was actually sent a promo copy of that thing when it came out. The record business used to be really something.

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 26 July 2021 01:36 (two years ago) link

Been listening to some Mike Stern and John Scofield and for as much as I have heard Miles Davis, I really have not listened to any of the post 74 stuff at all. There is quite a bit of good video of his later groups online.

earlnash, Monday, 26 July 2021 02:07 (two years ago) link

yes, the 20-disc box!!!! the ‘88 date smokes, and the first two discs are like another agharta!

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Monday, 26 July 2021 02:16 (two years ago) link

That box was what really sold me on his 80s work. Those bands killed it onstage. I talked a lot about that in my book.

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 26 July 2021 02:24 (two years ago) link

I was not an ILXor when this was initially polled, but this would have been a difficult choice between Aura and Amandla. Star People also worthy of consideration.

man with the horn was the first '80s miles record i heard and thus my first time realizing that a lot of ppl were full of shit about '80s miles. still think its rep is way too negative

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Monday, 26 July 2021 21:14 (two years ago) link

Ha; he said the exact same shit about Decoy:

There are some moments of interest (Branford Marsalis is heard on some cuts on soprano), but it is doubtful if anyone will be reviving "Robot 415," "Freaky Deaky," or "Code M.D." anytime soon.

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 26 July 2021 21:20 (two years ago) link

i generally have nothing but respect for any professional critic, but scott yanow is genuinely a dick, so fuck him.
