I want to imagine the lead singer is using a fake accent, for some reason.
This is rollicking.

two weeks pass...

So there was an article in the Chicago Reader last week talking about recent bands playing around with fascist imagery (mostly framed around Odd Future, these guys, and Cult of Youth) brought up a few things that make me wonder if I should feel a little more uncomfortable about having given them money for their album. Full article here, relevant excerpts below.

Iceage's lead singer, Elias Bender Ronnenfelt, has put out zines of feverish pen-and-ink illustrations in which race rioters and hooded figures resembling Klansmen run amok—they're indebted to the drawings of American artist Raymond Pettibon (who did lots of artwork for his brother's band Black Flag), not only in their controversial subject matter but in their almost complete lack of comfortably distancing irony.

Iceage's vaguely skinhead-thug stage outfits and frequent use of runes in promotional materials—a subtle reference to the white-supremacist movement—have provoked plenty of accusations of racism. But to my eyes these gestures are in the tradition of the Sex Pistols and Siouxsie Sioux prancing around London wearing swastikas—young people playing around with loaded imagery to piss off everyone who's not already as angry as they are.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 15 August 2011 17:12 (twelve years ago) link

"skinhead-thug stage outfits" seems pretty relevant insofar as it indicates how little that piece is bringing to the table

afaic there's no reason whatsoever for OF to be even mentioned either, apart from (a) they're the only band of the three that people care about on a remotely wide level and (b) two bands isn't enough for a crypto-trend piece

'what's puzzling you' is the name of my dog (DJ Mencap), Monday, 15 August 2011 18:13 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, the links to Iceage are pretty thin, it was clearly meant to be yet another thinkpiece about Odd Future that tossed in a couple other bands to round it out. I was just surprised because I'd never heard anything at all, even remotely, about Iceage and Cult of Youth being linked to "fascism".

Just to clarify, I'm not supporting any of the claims in this article or anything, just posted it for discussion. I thought it was interesting because I'd never heard any of these accusations about Iceage or Cult of Youth.

I mean its pretty much just an OF thinkpiece that needed a couple more examples to identify a "trend" that doesn't even really exist.

the idea that pettibon isn't ironic or have distance is p bizarre to me

If anything, for a punk band made up entirely of teenagers, they should be commended on how little sensationalist stuff they've indulged in.

Death To False Camp (Doran), Monday, 15 August 2011 19:09 (twelve years ago) link

Without analysis of their lyrics (which I haven’t been able to find online), direct confrontation of the band members, and possibly arduous decryption of the pages written in Runes in Elias’ zine, it cannot be stated with certainty that Iceage has fascist sympathies or if they are, as the hypemachine intends to portray them, just angry Danish high school kids.

...but let's not let that stop us

The point in the Iceage video where they puff bong smoke out through the Klannish hood was enough of an ironic hint for me.

"completely made up" ....Nah, while possibly untrue (the bong smoking part seems to suggest some irony as noted above) as that other link shows they do like playing around with certain imagery re klan hoods, race war, fred perry's.

The result is unsettling considering their ages, and even led one pugnacious blogger to accuse them of being fascists. They say they’re not, and that despite the current political climate in their homeland, they and many of their peers are choosing to stay apolitical when it comes to their music. “Sometimes political music can feel a bit played out, and it loses its message. There are still some political bands in Denmark, but not as many as there used to be. Times have changed, and you can’t just keep doing the same things forever.”

Way to write a "thinkpiece" w/ zero attempt at proper research; the CD comes with a lyric sheet.
