Lee Ann Womack - S/D?

No thread devoted to her! Unbelievable.

There's More Where That Came From, one of the decade's best albums, holds up beautifully, and Call Me Crazy's "The Bees" and especially the smoky "Solitary Thinkin'" rank with her best. I've even learned to love "I Hope You Dance."

what a lovely thing, to start this thread

i like her - u know, " i hope you dance " gets me every time - i think about it whenever i'm staring at the dance floor for too long

Alfred, if you think of it, remind me to tell you a story about one of these songs sometime.

also she really goes for an interesting thing with her look

she really does look fantastic - the soul in her eyes!

it's funny i remember searching for her name months ago and wondering why there was nothing

I always liked her song, "I may hate myself in the morning" -- such a classic.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 16:26 (two years ago) link

from one listen, this is at least on its level

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 16:41 (two years ago) link

it's really incredible what she does with a done-to-death song like "long black veil" imo

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:35 (two years ago) link

Sounds great to me, sort of like more recent Lucinda Williams with a more traditionally beautiful voice.

I love this record to bits.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:44 (two years ago) link

It feels longer than the others, but, man, was I surprised that she co-wrote more than half the album. The songs sound like obscure classics she's resurrected. And producer-husband Frank Liddell knows what to do with her.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:45 (two years ago) link

She was so good when I saw her in a club a couple of years ago. I couldn't tell if she was there because she wanted to or because country music has moved on and there's no place for music that sounds like this in bigger places. Probably the latter. But she was superb.

This and the Charlie Worsham album are my favorite country albums of the year, which means they're among the best of the year.

I just love how every song takes its time.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:56 (two years ago) link

I've only listened once, but each song had something that grabbed my attention

President Keyes, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:57 (two years ago) link

Worsham is Liddell, too, right? Just like lots of Miranda Lambert?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:58 (two years ago) link

god this record sounds so good

that choir that comes out of nowhere in "hollywood"

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 4 November 2017 20:41 (two years ago) link

is this my album of the year

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 4 November 2017 20:49 (two years ago) link

Might be mine, but I'd lose four songs.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 4 November 2017 20:54 (two years ago) link

which four though

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 4 November 2017 20:59 (two years ago) link

"Long Black Veil" is OK but she has spent the last eight years making the gesture redundant. I'd confine "Shine on Rainy Day," "Someone Else's Heartache," and "Take the Devil Out of Me" to b-sides.

I like Lee Ann Womack but "I Hope You Dance" would be on my worst songs list

cut cut (crüt), Sunday, 5 November 2017 14:01 (two years ago) link

at least three of those songs are my faves on the record alfred

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Sunday, 5 November 2017 14:05 (two years ago) link

You're welcome!

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 5 November 2017 14:15 (two years ago) link

i hope you dance

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Sunday, 5 November 2017 14:21 (two years ago) link

i could look this up but is the Shine On Rainy Day the Brent Cobb song?

alpine static, Sunday, 5 November 2017 15:28 (two years ago) link

it's one of them, he also did "bottom of the barrel"

"Hollywood" is such a good song

country funk of "He Called Me Baby" is so great

what do you think?

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:45 (eight months ago) link

well I'm only halfway through a first listen but so far so good!

the George Jones cover is a charmingly odd choice to end it with (I admit I skipped ahead to listen to that first)

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:53 (eight months ago) link

this has some of those "hot shit electric guitarist showoff" moments that I always find interesting on modern country albums. the playing is much looser and rawer than the showboating country-rock guitar solos of previous eras.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 17:07 (eight months ago) link

not that the band is really the focus here - good country session musos know to always serve the song/performer - it's just interesting what they do with the moments where they step forward

this Long Black Veil cover is... different

"He Called Me Baby" has such cool guitar playing going on. I love that raw (for the 21st century) band in a room sound. These guys are hot stuff:

― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn),

me today. the harmonies on the chorus to "The Last Time" are the most gorgeous thing ever. like, i have a raw, physical reaction to them

Heez, Thursday, 10 September 2020 15:57 (two weeks ago) link

Her cover of "Out on the Weekend" v. fetching too

The coda on Hollywood is verrrrry Candy Says

― Οὖτις I want her to get back with Willie, at least one more time ("Mendocino County Line" got Grammy for Best Country Duet, and was something of a hit). At this point, could be, should be "Pale Blue Eyes." Seriously, just imagine. What the h-e-double-hocky-sticks, he did "Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other" a long time ago now.
