Is the Classic Rock Canon happening? Because that will need clarification. Do ringers like The Beatles count? IMHO, if they had or are scheduled to have their own poll, they shouldn't be eligible. Ideally this poll is for Boston, Foghat etc

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 22 December 2013 15:52 (ten years ago) link

I would disagree with DQing any artists/songs in advance from the nominations list. I kinda trust the voters to recognize the adrenaline rush of hearing, say, Thunderclap Newman for the first time in five years and placing it above "I Can See For Miles" or something else that might have worn a little thin with overfamiliarity. Besides, I think some dude is going to work from a fixed list of songs based on radio play, and I imagine only the Stones would be overrepresented in that list...

so much naivete in this post, but ehhh it's christmas

millions now living will never kick out the jams (WilliamC), Sunday, 22 December 2013 16:06 (ten years ago) link

Lotta discussion of that upthread - I believe the idea is to base it on one or several big Labor Day countdowns from stations in the genre. Keeps the focus on the limited body of this 'canon' of songs.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 23 December 2013 02:37 (ten years ago) link

to be clear i never agreed to the idea of sticking exclusively to one or a few radio stations top 500 countdowns' for nominees for the Classic Rock poll -- if people send me some of those and the thing seems well stocked i might consider it, but i'm probably gonna start with that kind of base and then open things up for additional nominations.

i don't see the point in barring big bands like The Beatles -- if anything it'll be interesting to see their handful of Abbey Road/White Album-era classic rock radio staples battle it out with less canonized acts.

some dude, Monday, 23 December 2013 02:45 (ten years ago) link

Well, then it's just going to turn into favorite song, and God Only Knows will win.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 23 December 2013 03:08 (ten years ago) link

Let me reword that: opening it up to everything will make it all beatles, beach boys, zeppelin, etc. and God Only Knows by the Beach Boys will most likely win.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 23 December 2013 03:09 (ten years ago) link

i never hear Beach Boys on any of the classic rock stations i've ever listened to, they're "oldies" territory now, so they prob won't even be in the poll.

some dude, Monday, 23 December 2013 03:23 (ten years ago) link

there MAY be some kind of statute of limitations of, like, no more than the 5 or 10 most played songs by any one act, if that seems to make sense. but i think most people voting will just naturally not want to fill their ballots with A-listers and will put in just token one or two favorites anyway, which will lead to votesplitting for Zep while all the Foghat votes go to "Slow Ride."

some dude, Monday, 23 December 2013 03:25 (ten years ago) link

Classic-rock station here doesn't play much Beach Boys, but I think you'll hear "Good Vibrations," "Sail On Sailor," and "Do It Again" occasionally.

clemenza, Monday, 23 December 2013 03:28 (ten years ago) link

yeah "Good Vibrations" is prob AOR enough to get a nom. definitely not "God Only Knows" though.

some dude, Monday, 23 December 2013 03:29 (ten years ago) link

Hand to Bob, I don't think of Beatles/Stones/Zep and the big names when I think of classic rock. I think of "Slow Ride" and "Go All the Way" and "Aimee" and "Green Onions" and all the songs that make me say "oh damn, haven't heard that one in forever."

"Junior's Farm" will make my ballot, but probably not a Beatles song.

this may be the poll that finally puts Wings on equal footing with The Beatles

some dude, Monday, 23 December 2013 03:40 (ten years ago) link

Like A Rolling Stone is 1,000,000 times better than Slow Ride and Radar Love, but not in an FM radio poll.

Late pass on this, but i'm totally with the people who want an inclusionary classic rock poll. I trust voters to adhere to stick to the spirit of the poll, and not just turn it into "Favorite Popular Songs 1965-1987."

I agree some dude about seeing a poll where "Stairway to Heaven," "All Right Now," "Come Together," "American Girl," and "Carry On Wayward Son" are all competing for votes

intheblanks, Monday, 23 December 2013 16:58 (ten years ago) link

agree *with* some dude

intheblanks, Monday, 23 December 2013 17:00 (ten years ago) link

I feel like the classic rock poll is gonna be all time ILM

Euler, Monday, 23 December 2013 17:08 (ten years ago) link

Grrrrr

Once again I'm outvoted. First y'all gang up and cyberbully me about including Eno in the Roxy poll. Now you heathens want to keep the classic rock poll "open" and "inclusionary. Scott Muni is rolling in his grave.

Just remember what the Louvin brothers said: That word "broadminded" is spelled S-I-N

kornrulez6969, Monday, 23 December 2013 17:17 (ten years ago) link

haha what you mean like Eno solo albums in the Roxy poll? that's ridiculous

ime you should ignore the ILX hivemind's requests and just run the poll the way you want

Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 23 December 2013 17:23 (ten years ago) link

Yes. Eno solo records in the Roxy poll. They're opening it up to Bryan Ferry, so why not? If it was good enough for Lou Reed, John Cale and Nico in the VU poll, it should be good enough for Eno. It is a DYNAMITE idea and I should be congratulated. Instead, all I get is scorn.

ime you should ignore the ILX hivemind's requests and just run the poll the way you want

Yes! By the way, I'm running the Elvis Costello poll under Vienna rules, in which the poll runner's #1 gets a 10,000 point bonus.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 23 December 2013 17:29 (ten years ago) link

I thought Ferry was running as a separate side poll. Is it all just dropped into the same ballot? This is madness. Completely invalidates the proven-by-science nature of these polls.

Not convinced this actually worked for VU, hate it for Roxy, hate it even more for Genesis, and will vote in all of these anyway.

I'm okay with Stairway and Freebird in the classic rock poll since those always finished 1-2 in the annual classic rock radio countdowns.

resulting post (rogermexico.), Monday, 23 December 2013 18:27 (ten years ago) link

it worked out okay for VU, I thought, altho I would have preferred my original solo-careers-only poll

Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 23 December 2013 18:28 (ten years ago) link

Voting for them all together and separating out the results turned out to be pretty brilliant.

yeah...Classic Rock definitely won't get rolling until after the year-end poll is done in January, unless i decide to run a nominations/discussion thread for a bit before the official voting thread. didn't wanna overlap with that or the disco poll (plus I just ran two polls over the summer, so i'm not in a rush). don't care if the Roxy Music poll cuts in line ahead of me -- I feel like the big genre-spanning polls need longer windows for voting and everything else so it'll be a slow process.

some dude, Friday, 27 December 2013 12:54 (ten years ago) link

I'll do a Byrds and offshoots poll which includes Gene Clark, Gram Parsons, David Crosby, Roger McGuinn and the rest

kornrulez6969, Friday, 27 December 2013 13:41 (ten years ago) link

Actually, I'd like to do a "Covers" poll. All cover versions of previously recorded songs. That could be fun.
