art dealin' thru the west coast (tpp), Thursday, 15 March 2012 18:51 (twelve years ago) link

"presumably joking"

goole, Thursday, 15 March 2012 19:12 (twelve years ago) link

Although The-Dream wouldn't reveal any specific names, chatter during the session implied that "Bed" singer J. Holiday and The Weeknd were possible targets.

What about "Baby" singer Justin Bieber or "Just Like Me" singer Jamie Foxx?

Andy K, Thursday, 15 March 2012 19:20 (twelve years ago) link

remember when the-dream was beefing with chris brown before it was cool

I'm shocked the album exists in something resembling a finished state this far out from its scheduled release. Usually when I review R&B albums, I get the sense they were hastily finalized about two weeks before they hit shelves, if that.

Evan R, Thursday, 15 March 2012 20:06 (twelve years ago) link

really? i haven't gotten that impression w/ most major label albums, a lot of them seem to be sitting on the shelf for a minute and then get a few of-the-minute rappers thrown on at the last minute

some dude, Thursday, 15 March 2012 21:28 (twelve years ago) link

is the writer sure that the lyric "sometimes even my cape needs dry cleaning" is a Superman reference?

some dude, Thursday, 15 March 2012 21:28 (twelve years ago) link

a superman that hoe reference

During this listening session, The-Dream closed his eyes and began winding and shimmying by himself to the track.

This is amazing

boxedjoy, Thursday, 15 March 2012 23:05 (twelve years ago) link

his weird self-imploding ripple dance is still playing in my head when i close my eyes, since i saw him do it to fast car on that tour video a couple of days back.

otm!, it is encouraging, particularly because the view we got into his process when he made his free record made it sound super flexible. i mean i guess it isn't finished but at least there are big chunks done that he's ready to go play out with.

also the weeknd said this guy looks like the hamburglar, feel like this should be posted itt

"I'm going to work with Shakira at some point over the next couple of months," says The-Dream, "and she was always on my wish list, because she's another one of those females, a great female artist." As for his dream of working with Chris Martin of Coldplay? "That's just a Jay-Z phone call away," he says.

i haven't been able to shake the impression of The-Dream as Jazze Pha's mini-me since the "Shawty Is A 10" video

dude didn't even have any real radio hits even as a writer for a year or two there, but "Love On Top" and "Birthday Cake" changed that, maybe he can stop his commercial tailspin after all

some dude, Saturday, 17 March 2012 21:33 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, he's lucky that something off that beyonce album finally hit

So I saw The-Dream at the Fillmore Silver Spring last night, outside Washington DC. He had a drummer and 2 keyboard/synth players (one of whom also played bass). The-Dream alternated between singing live, and singing along or lip-synching with pre-recorded vocal tracks or letting the crowd sing while he asked for more Patrone. The show lasted for just an hour( $33 admission). He did dance and strut energetically. He's in tour mode: was wearing the same Oakland Raiders cap, black sunglasses, black jacket, and Roc-a-Fella Records necklace I read that he wore in NYC at SOBs.
He again proclaimed himself "the realest" out there, and grumbled more about the fakes who have imitated him in the last two years. Much of the crowd did not seem enthused with the cover of "Beat that p*ssy up". I didn't like it. It was alternately sad and comical watching him go overboard in his attempt to be a swaggering 2012 era foul-mouthed star, or maybe that was part of his Marvin Gaye for 2012 mad at my ex shtick. I forgot the name of the other mad at his ex song he did. "Walking on the Moon," "Shawty", "Falsetto," "Kill the Lights," "Rockin' that ..." all went over better. He had a woman singer come onstage and do a song and a half(the latter was part of Kanye's "All of the Lights" that I think he assisted in writing).

^^ valuable dispatch from somewhere outside the borders of Teriustan

some dude, Sunday, 18 March 2012 14:42 (twelve years ago) link

as a recovering terius stan i have no real desire to see him live. his twitter makes him seem like a clown

art dealin' thru the west coast (tpp), Sunday, 18 March 2012 17:50 (twelve years ago) link

Just realized how badly Chris Brown's "Strip" bites "Rockin' That Shit."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/the-dream-at-fillmore-silver-spring/2012/03/18/gIQAFBtDLS_story.html

The freelancer reviewing him for the Washington Post was now wowed either. She and Caramanica in the NY Times were harsh on Nash's vocals. I'm less concerned with him not having Al Green's range and more with what he was singing, his cliched between song patter, and with his reliance on the backing vocal tracks. He's a great songwriter though.

curmudgeon, Monday, 19 March 2012 12:58 (twelve years ago) link

gotta say i'm leaning towards becoming a "recovering terius stan" too. not saying he'll be useless from here on in obv, i'm sure there'll be great stuff to come, but the god period, the imperial phase, is over

lex pretend, Monday, 19 March 2012 13:24 (twelve years ago) link

Away from a stage and his twitter, he might still be able to write and record strong material

curmudgeon, Monday, 19 March 2012 14:42 (twelve years ago) link

that's how it usually works, yeah

some dude, Monday, 19 March 2012 17:02 (twelve years ago) link

i had an absolute blast at the show tonight

come on a #KONY (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 25 March 2012 05:51 (twelve years ago) link

i think we were lucky that we saw him after he had played a few weeks of dates... he obv can't really sing but he was great on stage and the band was good, none of the tracks sounded like ass or were turned into linkin park tracks.

the set was pretty heavy on LH & LVM, i don't think he played any album tracks off LK, tho he did do one of the ones of 1977 that i don't remember. singles got the best responses but like when he dropped into the rap on "fancy" the entire crowd was spitting w/ him, it was kinda nuts.

also he did "i luv your girl" -> loverance which was hilarious and pretty awesome

anyway it wasn't a mindblowing show but it was really fun just to be in a big room full of people that knew all the songs and all the words and it was appropriately goofy and all that

J0rdan S., Sunday, 25 March 2012 05:58 (twelve years ago) link

also he ended w/ "rockin that shit" which was prob the biggest response then he went off for a sec and came back for "let me see the booty" which was pretty hype. but i love that song.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 25 March 2012 06:01 (twelve years ago) link

Kicking myself for not driving down to this show tonight; totally forgot about it :(

Evan R, Sunday, 25 March 2012 07:35 (twelve years ago) link

so weird to think of him closing w/ his biggest hit and then encoring with the flop that the other song was a face-saving recovery from

internet somebody (some dude), Sunday, 25 March 2012 14:09 (twelve years ago) link

yes, very weird

dayo, Sunday, 25 March 2012 14:21 (twelve years ago) link

it was an incredible act of defiance

J0rdan S., Sunday, 25 March 2012 14:37 (twelve years ago) link

I'm always shocked when setlists aren't structured in reverse order of chart performance

Evan R, Sunday, 25 March 2012 15:29 (twelve years ago) link

he came on stage and did a bit of "love vs money" ("when love is a problem" repeated) then went right into "shawty is a 10" which got the crowd going, then he did "fast car" -> 90 seconds or so of "nikki"... then i think he did "kill the lights" and let casha do that cover from 1977. then i think he did "falsetto" (while miming getting head w/ the mic as his dick, obv)

J0rdan S., Sunday, 25 March 2012 16:43 (twelve years ago) link

he also did "falsetto" in the middle of the set, did the "gangsta luv" and "throw it in the bag" hooks, did "roc your body" (this sounded good) "walkin on the moon" (this sounded surprisingly great), "purple kisses"... was surprised that he didn't do "yamaha" tho

J0rdan S., Sunday, 25 March 2012 16:44 (twelve years ago) link

also all the house music was songs that he'd written for other artists

J0rdan S., Sunday, 25 March 2012 16:44 (twelve years ago) link

then i think he did "falsetto" (while miming getting head w/ the mic as his dick, obv)

dayo, Sunday, 25 March 2012 16:47 (twelve years ago) link

yea 'walking on the moon' was a highlight i recall too

kinda pissed i didnt get a 'let me see the booty' "encore", otherwise hes prob doin the same set everywhere more or less

johnny crunch, Sunday, 25 March 2012 16:48 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i think he's been doing the same set

i was with some friends that had been checking the setlists and once he finished w/ "rockin that shit" they were like "that's it, he's done" but then he came out for "let me see the booty" so i guess it was something he was feeling last night or w/e

he held the mic at his crotch like it was his dick and sorta like... idk slowly humped the air while moving his hand on the mic. it was bizarre, obv.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 25 March 2012 16:52 (twelve years ago) link

o - who was doing the singing, or was it piped in?

dayo, Sunday, 25 March 2012 16:52 (twelve years ago) link

there was a backing track but he was signing def singing. he let the crowd do a lot tho.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 25 March 2012 16:53 (twelve years ago) link

that's pretty cool imo -- i'm always surprised artists w/ a big catalog of side projects or whatever that don't do something like that when playing live
