Where do I find more music as joyous as One of Those Days (Organ Mix) by Seany Mac? (N.B. ILM Dance Aficionados)

So this magical track popped up on a mix by Physical Therapy a few months ago, and then again on a few mixes by How to Dress Well this month. It's totally wonderful, but I have no idea where to find more of this. It's apparently from 2009, and YouTube describes it as bassline, but the only other bassline track I've heard is Heartbroken by T2 & Jodie Aysha and it's not quite the same thing. Any suggestions for more totally exuberantly joyous anthems of this nature, or is it totally one of a kind?

this is the most magical track

this is nice sounds mad 90s

Seriously.

Sometimes when I'm reviewing dance/house with random anonymous vocalists and judge it harshly I worry that I'm being rockist and applying rules of other genres or whatever in search of 'feeling' etc. and then I hear something like this and remember that when dance music is at its best it is totally euphoric and melancholy and anticipatory and naive and knowing all at once.

The 'just thinking maybe you could come over' is so heartrendingly tentative and nervous without betraying her eagerness, and 'I wanna laugh, talk and listen' says so much more about the (wanted? existing?) relationship; it's not a quick fuck - it's friendship? communication? connection? something really tangible.

"Nothing in particular to do. No phone calls, cause the phone's off" is my favourite line delivery, though.

semi-ironic 'faggot' (Alex in Montreal), Saturday, 4 June 2011 02:00 (twelve years ago) link

Hm. 90s? When I think 90s I think like...Black Box, Haddaway, Robin S., Stars on 54, etc. Kind of crossover dance stuff that's really pounding and a little over the top (in a good way, naturally). There's something smoother and subtler about this to my ears, notwithstanding the busy production.

Were you thinking of anything in particular, D?

semi-ironic 'faggot' (Alex in Montreal), Saturday, 4 June 2011 02:04 (twelve years ago) link

amazing, plan to die listening to this, like a rat with a cocaine button. know nothing abt this genre, but have to assume that this is one of a kind.

orchestral pygnoeuvres in zee park (contenderizer), Saturday, 4 June 2011 02:06 (twelve years ago) link

i should say the mood of it makes me think of a certain strain of late 90s-esque dance pop rather than early 90s robin s (although there's a direct line from that ... in fact this seems to cop the same keyboard trick as 'show me love'?)

lebroner (D-40), Saturday, 4 June 2011 02:08 (twelve years ago) link

and it has nothing to do with the lyrics, not yet anyway. love it strictly for the sound. listening for the fourth time now.

ahp contenderizers into it, already over

lebroner (D-40), Saturday, 4 June 2011 02:08 (twelve years ago) link

xp yeah, contenderizer. it was ALLLLL about the sound for me the first million times, and then i was uploading it to my tumblr and was trying to write something about it, and actually listened to the lyrics and it just got that much better. except, "the sound" needs to include those vocals because there is something wonderful about them that i can't explain.

lyrically it's very much in line with tatyana ali's daydreamin' and christina's come on over (All I want) but the lyrics are not necessary for loving this at all.

i can't imagine anyone not liking this. i plan to play it for all my friends so they can roll their eyes and go back to kyuss or depeche mode or whatever.

OTM, and it's strange, because they sound so ordinary on first blush, and while the vocal melody is appealing, it's simple and quite familiar. seems like it shouldn't be anything special, but somehow IT IS. surprised that this is from '09, as i'd like to believe that anything this great would rise to someone's attention pretty fast. isn't that what i pay you people for?

orchestral pygnoeuvres in zee park (contenderizer), Saturday, 4 June 2011 02:19 (twelve years ago) link

i.e., i'm bummed that i don't get to vote for this in the year-end poll

orchestral pygnoeuvres in zee park (contenderizer), Saturday, 4 June 2011 02:20 (twelve years ago) link

Me too! i didn't notice it until it turned up in this mix by Physical Therapy back in March (who incidentally is amazing, check his remix of Alicia's Unthinkable and Ciara's Speechless) and then it popped up again in two mixes by How to Dress Well, but he definitely found them through Physical Therapy, per an interview with Urban Outfitters and before that Google turns up pretty much nothing besides Seany Mac's myspace page, the YouTube posted in 2009 and...that's pretty much it. Oh and a list of 10 songs recommended by Grimes (who is also wonderful), but Claire (Grimes) is definitely part of the PT/HtDW axis on this - she opened for HtDW in Montreal and Toronto.

So, yeah. Something this great apparently rose to nobody's attention at all. There are 12 listeners on last.fm or something ridiculously low like that.

So, consensus is that this and stuff like it is Bassline (a la T2 & Jodie) and Organ Mixes are a subset of this?

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Saturday, 21 January 2012 22:39 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, basically Bassline has a faultline running through it between the Organ stuff (very housey post "Push The Feeling On" / "Show Me Love" vibe) and the harder stuff which is uglier-sound and more syncopated and post-grime. And then 2-step revivalism which mediates between the two somewhat while also being different again.

One of the things I love about Royal-T's "Cool Down" is the way it seems to touch on all of these things simultaneously but with such an air of unassuming ease.

idk what to really say to this thread tbh, it's bizarre. maybe kinda fun too but.... mostly bizarre.

its merits are valid and up for discussion by all means but it has to be stressed "organ" isnt really a codified doctrine like dubstep or whatever, it's a liminal, near-subconscious shade of the yorkshire sprachraum that bassline draws from, ebbs and flows in tandem with, coalesces itself from and then dissolves back into, since its inception. cf h20 and platnum's 'what's it gonna be' from 2008 for instance

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jd_4OrFH3EU

i guess if there's a story to tell now it's about how fully this has all evolved to become integrated with more general stuff like electro, jackin, 4x4, fidget where it carries an equal weight and influence; kind of a more commercial and populist version of what dj q's been doing with ukg, although then he also includes the likes of nick hannam, paul sirrell, hannah wants, billy kenny....

I think this is precisely what is interesting about this stuff, its status as a not-quite-genre.

absolutely, and i know you know that but do they?

i mean not that they HAVE to, there's nothing wrong per se with people waving a random track from 2009 around, like whatever, but then when people start deploying it with a capital O and it becomes sarge saying miguel's 'all' is organ it's a bit uhm...

not sure why you feel the need to come at the discussion from this direction, r|t|c. i'm not claiming to be anything but a novice wr2 this uncodified doctrine, about which i'm only tangentially interested, though i'm sure it's helpful to be told that "it's a liminal, near-subconscious shade of the yorkshire sprachraum that bassline draws from, ebbs and flows in tandem with, coalesces itself from and then dissolves back into." poetry is surely a tide that elevates all boats. my interest here is based primarily on the fact that i love a specific song, though it turns that i also like a couple of the dj hasan tubes on the channel tim linked three months back. looking forward to the mixtapes, though i haven't heard them yet.

eh contendo you can rest easy in your splendid isolation, i havent once denied anyone their right to enjoy this song. what i'm talking about pertains to the dissemination of organ as a "thing" leading off from this track, which is a discussion you've not involved yourself in and therefore my reply was not addressed to you or people in your position.

as for the poetry line, wind your fucking neck in.

earlier i was wondering if i could find a better "one of those days" mp3 than my semi-shitty-quality one that i'd been playing. i then found this and impulse-purchased the entire seany mac oeuvre in 320 kbps (or at least what is available thru that site). of course "one of those days" is pretty unique in its gloriousness (compared to like, 99% of all music ever recorded) but the rest is actually quite listenable too -- "midnight love" is my fav non-"one of those days" one. (just fyi, the mp3 that they are selling as "damaged" is actually also "everything", but mislabeled.)
