So I haven't been into what the kids are calling screamo music in a couple years. I just got around to listening Blood Brother's March On Electric Children, and my first impression is, these guys are REAL unique for a genre of complacency to the norm. They have a pretty good two singer dynamic thing working for them, and the music is incredibly upbeat. The first thing that pops into my head is the recent Oxes article from Freaky Trigger. They seem to stray from the ejaculatory political statements found all over screamo music, and seem to have a great time playing what they are making. Anyone else got input?

Brock K. (Brock K.), Thursday, 29 August 2002 21:20 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't have any real "input," but I saw them live at the More Than Music festival and was impressed by how much fun they seemed to be having. I wonder if their recorded work is anywhere near as compelling.

Jody Beth Rosen, Thursday, 29 August 2002 21:26 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yep, the elpee is fun and awkward and hurting in equal measures, i like this sound and don't know why people are so wary/cynical about it. I read that Ross Robinson Uber-Producer is gonna produce 'em and try and take this sound to the masses. sounds innaresting.

nebbesh, Friday, 30 August 2002 04:32 (twenty-two years ago) link

I was at More Than Music too, and good god, they brought the house down! If you liked them live, you'll definitely like March On Electric Children. It's one of my favorite albums this year because it's just so damned giddy— as much as I wish the singers wouldn't be so screechy all the time, the screeching is a big part of what makes them sound so joyously bratty. I always think of Kathleen Hanna's valley-girl cadences in Bikini Kill when I hear The Blood Brothers.

Most of the screamo (or at least stuff described as such; I refer mostly to Antioch Arrow, Mohinder, and Heroin) I've heard is pretty humorless and self-serious compared to The Blood Brothers, who sound like they're having loads of fun even as they irreparably damage their vocal cords.

Oh, and here's the excellent review of March On Electric Children that got me into the Blood Brothers in the first place.

Nick Mirov, Friday, 30 August 2002 04:52 (twenty-two years ago) link

agree.. I've seen them once open for the Locust, and while I have fun watching the Locust, I thought the Blood Brothers outdid them. The juxtaposition of the two singers is a crucial element I think... you have the taller, more harrowing guy.. then the "ROOOOOORRRWWW, I'm FRISKING MY HAAAIIIIRRR" guy (who's also in the band the Soiled Doves, who used to be called The Vogue). They're the kinda band that probably gives me an idea of what it might have been like to see Antioch Arrow (who I sadly never had a chance to see live)

Here's the thing -- March On is very disappointing in comparison to This Adultury Is Ripe. Get that NOW!

Wanted to bump this thread because I got Burn Piano Island, Burn yesterday. This comes out in February, I hear, and my fucking god it is good. This is the infamous Ross Robinson produced album, and it works so well... It's a bit more melodic, but still just as nuts. It's absolutely amazing.

Yancey (ystrickler), Monday, 18 November 2002 16:57 (twenty-two years ago) link

I so want to put Burn Piano Island, Burn at the top of my year end list even though it only exsits in promo and mp3 form at this point. Better production and more melody with no dip in intensity from the previous releases. After seeing the Blood Brothers play last week, I am convinced that they are the best band in the USA at the moment.

Is Burn Piano Island going to be on a bigger label than the other releases? I would like to see what it does with better distro. Will the kids like it? I don't know for sure. When we saw them everyone seemed pretty impatient. They were clearly there for the headliner (Glassjaw). We skipped out before Glassjaw played. I assume this was the correct move (I have never heard them before). I didn't want to risk a letdown after 35 minutes of shouty bliss.

BPIB is on Artist Direct, so the publicity and availability will be much much greater. This record absolutely floors me. I've been a huge fan since This Adultery is Ripe, but this is such a huge leap forward with the improved production and the occassional semblance of a melody.

Yancey (ystrickler), Monday, 18 November 2002 19:26 (twenty-two years ago) link

BPIB is on Artist Direct

Excellent. I'm going to start my campaign to get "Six Nightmares" on TRL right now. Honestly, this is the most exciting thing I have heard in a long time, and I really haven't cared for most of the other bands the Blood Brothers get grouped in with.

W.B., Monday, 18 November 2002 19:45 (twenty-two years ago) link

Who do the Blood Brothers get grouped in with? And part of the reason for the improved sound is Ross Robison's production. I had been nervous about what he would do with them, but it totally works.

Yancey (ystrickler), Monday, 18 November 2002 19:57 (twenty-two years ago) link

I saw them in New London (WORST TOWN EVER!) a while back--drove about an hour for the show, and they were pretty cool. I'm not sure how well they'd sound recorded, because I think without the visual element I might get bored or the songs might start to blur together. And I say that as a fan of other screamy hardcore music (the aforementioned Mohinder, Heroin, Antioch Arrow as well as more recent stuff like Black Masks For Secrecy, Reversal of Man and Orchid).

Maybe if I find one of their albums used or discounted or am given a copy, I'll pick it up and listen to it, but otherwise I don't think I have much motivation to do so.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 18 November 2002 20:43 (twenty-two years ago) link

Who do the Blood Brothers get grouped in with?

Other screamy hardcore bands as mentioned above I'd say. Parts of the Gravity and GSL lineups. And my statement of not caring for that stuff is kind of a misstatement. It's more like I'm not really familiar with it and what I have heard hasn't compelled me to hear/learn more. My opinions and tastes have probably changed since last hearing and I think I will investigate further.

My intent was to say that I'm excited by the Blood Brothers even though they don't fit within the mold of what I would normally listen to. But if they open my ears to related sounds, that's all the better as far as I'm concerned.

W.B., Monday, 18 November 2002 20:55 (twenty-two years ago) link

After listening to this essentially on repeat all day, I'd like to resort to hyperbole: This is one of the best albums I have _ever_ heard. Ever.

Yancey (ystrickler), Monday, 18 November 2002 21:46 (twenty-two years ago) link

Saw them Friday opening on the Glassjaw tour, which meant they were booked by Clear Channel into a room with shitty sound. Even so, they were amazing. The drummer especially.

I'd liken them to Song of Zarathustra, who are nearly as good live and toured with them. SoZ have synthesizers and lurch more. Blood Brothers are sort of "Bohemian Rhapsody" on 78 rendered by torture victims.

Amazing. The cover of Under Pressure, which I have posted about on here before, peerless. Can't believe bastard yanc3y has had the albums since November (who'd ya have to screw for that little trinket?). Anyone seen the DVD?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Saturday, 1 March 2003 18:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

i think anyone who is wary about their records (especially B,PI,B) not being able to stand up to the live show will have any doubt erased within hearing the first 5 seconds of "Guitarmy". i've never in my life heard a record this powerful. simply listening to it with the volume up as far as you can stand literally leaves you short of breath, and i think ross robinson has a lot to do with that. this could easily be the best album-based example of hardcore music ever. in fact, most hardcore bands could learn a lesson from this, and that is that good, solid production from someone who knows the music can really pay off. i can't wait to see how this is received.

colinmcelligatt, Saturday, 1 March 2003 19:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Is this out yet? I went to the rec store last nite and they had two Blood Brothers albums and the DVD but not this. If not, when? I really like what I've heard.

Upon listening to BPIB and MOEC, I was amazed how extremely annoyed I was by the vocals, considering that I have about 200 albums with high pitched screamed/shrieked vocals. And that childish voice for the sung parts isn't too great either. But apart from that, it's all pretty cool - and I'm not a big Hardcore fan. There isn't much room for variation within the HC paradigm so at least make it sound enthusiastic.

I'm not too thrilled about the production though - the guitars are terribly compressed and mid-range-y. I know this is the big Ross Robinson trick to get a good radio sound, but on any half-decent set of speakers, it renders the guitars flat, one-dimensional and powerless. If they had a more "classic NYHC" production I'd probably like the new album more.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 14:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, and "Piano Island" is great. Though I'm surprised no-one has commented on how clean cut and good-looking they are in the flesh for ones so scabrous and noisy. Sure to be Blood Brothers pinups in Smash Hits any day now.

I've only heard the album from last year. They're pretty good - have to get used to the singing (is it a man or a woman?) and there's perhaps not enough bass to drive it home to my ears, but yeah it's an interesting take on hardcore/metalcore. Still prefer Converge, but then I guess they're a different band altogether.

Oh hang on, that's what Siegbran said five posts ago.

I've been listening constantly to the Young Machetes album for the last three months and I still think it's awesome. Gonna check BPIB soon, according to Yancey's postings it's great, so I think I'm gonna like it.

My very favourite band, way more engaging than the comparatively dire Converge (who I really like!). "Young Machetes" might be their best yet, simply awesome. Not many bands can keep momentum over a 55-minute album like that, especially hardcore/metal bands.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 23:52 (seventeen years ago) link

'shame' is one of the great closing tracks, yeah, it really is. if 'young machetes' lives up to it and the likes of 'cecilia at the silhouette saloon' then I AM BUYING.

i don't like young machetes much

piano island and crimes both still captivate me though.

some of the imagery in the shame is wack! "all the colours are gonna rot on sight when we're around" ? haha

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 09:33 (seventeen years ago) link

lovelovelove young machetes. 'you're the dream unicorn' is so awesome - opens like buttholes' 'julio inglesias', then slips into some bezerker thrash thing, before these insane Queen harmonies swoop in at 1.30.

burn piano island burn is definitely the best starting place with this lot, tho.

"Young Machetes" isn't as deceptively catchy as "Crimes," I don't think, even though it is being billed as their first 'catchy' disc in a lot of reviews.

Does Guy Picciotto make a lot of money for producing them, since they're on a mini-major and stuff? I just hope so. He does a great job with them.

Also, I still wish I could hear 'vocal tracks only' versions of all of their albums. How do those dudes' throats take the abuse?!

Fuck me, they appear to have broken up - I strongly this "hiatus" talk, mostly 'cause I'm pessimistic. I kind of suspected it from the tone of "Young Machetes" though.

Well, they got five brilliant albums in, and that's no small feat.

I am however excited for Ghost Wars (Arlie Carstens of Juno ft. member of the Blood Bros. and others) so at least there's that...

Simon H., Wednesday, 24 October 2007 17:38 (seventeen years ago) link

i can't recall this kind of 'break' ever working out well. and now it's like when i used to threaten to throw something at my little sister but not actually do it, so i could trap her in a state of fear for hours at a time.

A real shame. I thought they were great. Except for 'Crimes' -- that was kinda shite.

MacDara, Friday, 9 November 2007 18:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, BPIB is dying for a remix/remaster. The songs are fantastic, but the production is too hollow or compressed or something. It just sounds wrong to my ears.

MacDara, Friday, 9 November 2007 18:05 (seventeen years ago) link

no way, sir, 'Crimes' is great. i think they are one of those rare bands where each album is a little bit better than the last, and however much it sucks that they have split, it's cool that it'll stay that way forever.

prediction: the new bands will suck. they had some weird chemisty and it's fucked now. i don't expect them to reproduce it in different bands.

Two of the demos on the Jaguar Love myspace are great, the other two not so much, but still promising, albeit in a more indie-pop sort of way.

And yes, I'd kill for another Neon Blonde record.

We're going to have to disagree about that. While there is certainly a progression in quality in their first three albums (though my opinion about BPIB's production still stands), Crimes, for me, was a dip -- but one they made up for with Young Machetes, which I love.

Well, one band that predates the Blood Brothers was The Vogue, later renamed Soiled Doves, who I always dug and wished did more.

They didn't lunge at your throat as much as Blood Brothers stuff did, but they were loud and I could swing to it. This was the band that featured the singer guy who liked to comb the back of his hair with his hand more.

I don't think either NB or JL has the potential to suck the way Sparta and the Mars Volta have (although to be fair the former has a few decent songs, in a Smashing Pumpkins c-side kinda way).
