i think that's accurate for a lot of her songs. she's pretty mesmerizing in person, but many of the songs are kind of meandering and not very memorable

I hear some Roy Orbison in there too. At the risk of way overgeneralizing about female indie singers, it's refreshing to hear a really good, full-throated voice that doesn't rely on breathy, wispy affectations.

the band backup, w/ the rock numbers, brings this out more - minimizes tendencies toward affectedness that were there in the last record too

all that mic distortion and loose barely-turned-up guitar amp distortion. Not a fan of that sound

I saw her the other week and the show was a little disappointing but my hopes for this album are sky high anyway. This song rules.

both of these new tunes are pretty great

It's not grabbing me. I got really excited in the first minute but was hoping she'd open up her voice a bit. I like the departure from the last album but her vocals feel more restrained than they should be.

Disregard me. Just jaded. Saw Kevin Morby and Big Thief earlier. Bored out of my mind. Austin is boring. I need to move back to Colorado.

idk, she seems to have a whole new look/'tude with the video for that song

i am not an angel olsen expert, maybe someone else has a better idea but i would suggest listening to songs from the new album if you like that one

She tones down the gothic-Johnny Cash vibe of the last album, which was key for me.

It's not that it's a *bad* thing, but that Gothhy Cash vibe made her last record stand out from the pack for me. The new record is solid but doesn't reach the same heights as "Burn Your Fire".

i love the new record. just pre-ordered it, actually, after hearing the leak. it is steadier paced and a bit less angry and depressing, so if that's not what you want then you might prefer her last one. but both are great imo.

im going to get this thing anyways cos i am hooked like a goldfish on her thing but yep i liked the flashes of anger on burn your fire but i guess if you havent got any of it then you cant fake it

i don't think so but her band is fantastic

the variety and slightly lighter overall tone on this new one makes it slightly disappointing for me - but i still think its a decent, listenable album i will continue to spend time with it even if it doesnt have the dark power of burn your fire

New album can't come fast enough. Hearing the 2014 bore on my student station's MegaSEg for months has started to fuck with my sleep.

right - i see - yep i got the record in the mail a couple of days ago so its early days but i def think it has a different tone from previous - i guess she is exploring different emotions this time around

"Woman" is an amazing track. Scorched closing guitar solo brings it home.

it's much stronger than Burn Your Fire though i get that some would be disappointed in the lack of anything like White Fire etc.

it's one of my favourites of the year, Sister/Those Were The Days/Woman is an incredible run of tracks

first listen to the whole album last night found it (and me) too scattered to form much of a coherent impression; giving it another go this morning & I think I'm liking it more

this record is really gorgeous and dynamic and I am psyched to finally totally enjoy one of her records

Where are you all streaming this? For some reason Apple Music doesn't have the whole album yet, even though it says it's out today

Just tried this out. Couldn't make it past track 2. Just too much singing and the music isn't my cup of tea. I guess I was expecting something like Julia Holter or Laura Groves, both musicians I really enjoy. Maybe when I just want a generic rock record with female vocals i'll try it again.

Sounds way better than the last one (which I was mostly lukewarm on, a few songs aside), based on one listen.

this still seems like mildly tasty layers of style (vibrato-laden ethereal vocals, lynchian guitar chords) laid over pretty weak songs

the songs on ultraviolence are tight

it's too bad Olsen threw a bi of shade at LDR recently cause she could make good dough writing her some songs

I'm glad I'm not the only person who was reminded of Ms. del Rey at times
