and you learn something new everyday: "Amazing Grace", the documentary/ Concert film directed by Sydney Pollack for Warner Bros., was set to be released as part of a double bill with Super Fly in 1972. However the film ended up in the studio vaults for over 38 years. While producer Alan Elliott is overseeing the project after Pollack's death in 2008, the credit on the film will read "a film by Sydney Pollack." Elliott has worked since 2008 to piece together the backstory of "Amazing Grace." As of September 2010[update], no date has been set for the release. Elliott says, "Maybe because it's history now. Here is one of the most famous artists in the world, as she was then, doing something that nobody had ever done, or has really done since. So I think the film is going to find a wider audience, not just because of its gospel roots, but because of its historical value."

I actually felt really sad when I heard this, and I normally don't really care that much about celebs... :( Hope she can live through this, but the statistics for pancreatic cancer survival are kind of grim

classic hat

Aretha is also hilariously shady when it comes to other female performers, she out-does Mariah in that category. Remember her beef with Tina Turner & Beyonce? LMAO

But the news isn't entirely bleak. While actors Michael Landon and Patrick Swayze succumbed to pancreatic cancer, Apple CEO Steve Jobs and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg have, so far, survived it

Hopefully she'll be a lucky one. Seeing her sing gospel the night before the Obama inauguration at the Kennedy Center is a very fond memory of mine. And that hat the next day...

Don't know if "shady" is the word. Aretha just considers herself the supreme diva. Etta James is the same way.

Sucks, poor woman.

She's the original and I am not going to blame her for all the bad copycats that have invaded the hitlists lately.

I mean, don't name them (not the thread for it), but really?

Don't worry guys, she can't die. The only person worthy of singing at her funeral would be herself, ergo she is immortal.

Fetchboy, Thursday, 16 December 2010 11:28 (thirteen years ago) link

lately?

The first bunch were during the 70s disco explosion, but the hitlists were largely devoid of them again by the 80s. Until this late 90s/early 2000s pop-RnB explosion.

oh. Hardly "lately" tho.

Mark G, Thursday, 16 December 2010 12:44 (thirteen years ago) link

And I guess Loletta Holloway was the one who really started the cliche.

As in.... Aretha Franklin is a great singer and no doubt about that (even though personally I think she'd been better off with different material). But Loletta Holloway is to blame for a lot of very, very, very, very bad music.

http://www.ew.com/article/2015/09/04/amazing-grace-aretha-franklin-telluride

Lots of Aretha threads...wasnn't sure where to put this. I wanna say a little prayer that a deal can be worked out with Aretha to show this movie doc of her Amazing Grace church gig

A Telluride Film Festival showing of a documentary about Aretha Franklin’s historic album Amazing Grace has been canceled, due to a lawsuit filed by the singer herself.

Franklin filed the lawsuit seeking “emergency injunctive release” earlier Friday, claiming that the film, also titled Amazing Grace, violated her contractual and intellectual rights, her right to privacy, and her rights to use and control her name and likeness. U.S. District Judge John Kane granted Franklin an emergency injunction against the film, a representative at the judge’s office told EW on Friday. In the court order, Judge Kane cited Franklin’s original agreement with Warner Bros., which required her consent for commercial use of the footage.

Amazing Grace, from producers Alan Elliott, Stefan Nowicki and Joey Carey, is composed heavily of 1972 footage shot by the late Sydney Pollack of Franklin’s historic performance at a church in Los Angeles. Pollack planned to use the footage for a movie for Warner Bros., but the project was shelved, and the footage stayed in Warner Bros.’ vault for more than 40 years.

In the order granting the injunction, Judge Kane noted that Franklin says she has not given permission for the film’s producers or for Telluride to screen the footage. The order also heads off fair use claims, reading, “a film that essentially recreates the entire concert experience is not fair use of the footage.”

Maybe if they come up with some extra bucks for Aretha, this can be worked out so it can be released

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 18:21 (eight years ago) link

that's a tough one; she really should have control over this but the fan in me just wants to see the performance

Meta Forksclove-Liebeskind (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 8 September 2015 18:25 (eight years ago) link

is her problem just that they didn't pay her idgi

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 18:26 (eight years ago) link

just guessing but she probably wants cash now to do promo, a cut of the gross and a modicum of creative control wrt release, marketing, final cut, etc

which are all things she's certainly grown accustomed to in her past several decades as a genre defining artist but prob were not part of her original contract

Meta Forksclove-Liebeskind (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 8 September 2015 18:29 (eight years ago) link

it's just weird, you would think the filmmakers would have worked this out beforehand

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 18:32 (eight years ago) link

Seems like they just thought that once they found the old contract with her, they could do what they wanted.

a group of kids at the high school across from my apartment are eating lunch outside and about thirty of them are rehearsing some sort of musical number (maybe for a talent show?) where two of them are belting the lead vocals to "Think" and the rest are doing backup and it is fucking awesome.

You might want to find a better translator, because nowhere does it say 'fatty' in the original article.

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 15 August 2018 13:58 (five years ago) link

When you go into the article, the automatic Google Translate brings it up as "fatty" in English. It seems to mean something like "ill patient" or "afflicted" though.

does it look like i'm here (jon123), Wednesday, 15 August 2018 17:44 (five years ago) link

With my limited ability to use a Dutch dictionary I can hazard a guess that the first word means “terminally ill” - literally “deathsick.”

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Wednesday, 15 August 2018 17:52 (five years ago) link

Perhaps Google Translate thought the word was a compound or derivative of “dikte” which, like its German equivalent “Dicke” means thickness, but can also mean “fatty,” perhaps, I guess.

You still used Google Translate or something to translate part or all of that, which is where the “staircase” arose.

My wife and I saw her in Chicago in the spring of last year and she still brought down the house. She sat for most of the concert, and had to take a bit of a break with a set that featured her band, but man was her voice a star. Rev. Jesse Jackson was two rows in front of us, and she saw him and declared, "what are you doing way back there, Jesse?, come right up front right now!" It was a magical night for sure. Rest in Power - R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Aretha!

BlackIronPrison, Thursday, 16 August 2018 14:40 (five years ago) link

Okay, sorry to belabor the point but hey ilx: forgot the iPhone has a Dutch dictionary - two actually- which translates the word as “mortally ill.”

That's what it means, yes, but that was already well established iirc
