Given the amount of tedious handwringing already should we push the Pitchfork list off into its own slurry ditch thread or something?

Curious what people think the most critically popular album of the year that you wouldn't have guessed would be one of the most critically popular albums of the year is

I mean more in a "hey who thought they'd step up their game" way than a "wtf is wavves doing here" way

My answer would be These New Puritans.

i just want you all to know that i blame lex for kanye topping all of these lists

funny to have spoon ride caboose at number 25 in the av club after their Remember The 90s guy claimed they're underappreciated for being so consistently perfect

also, da croup, my mind is still blown that anyone would give salem the time of day, but i should probably stop harping on that.

Also, how did Jamey Johnson "happen." Like I didn't even get a promo of it. The first time i heard of him was when he was getting four page features in every magazine

step 1: take rolling stone, spin, mojo, stereogum, etc. lists
step 2: shuffle albums, relist in different order
step 3: put kanye back on top since his album is perfect

i dunno...RS top 5 article mentioned glowingly his anti blue state lyrics on a couple of songs, pretty unrepentant and harsh shit like they say, his zings against tofu and pricey wine in los angeles are pretty tough.

rolling tabs on Kanye #1s

Vibe
Spin
Rolling Stone
Stereogum
Onion A/V

this is kind of unprecendented!

whiney's right that JJ's profile has very suddenly raised among people not actively paying attention to country, i never heard of the guy until recently and it seems like he's everywhere

I sort of feel like that standard country-artist-hits-mainstream MO, though...? Like, become big in your niche which by the way a ginormous # of people listen to, then emerge onto the scene fully-formed like Athene bursting out of Zeus's forehead.

BO (DJP), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:52 (thirteen years ago) link

sure, but his critical profile is much higher than the average platinum country singer, let alone other merely gold-selling ones like him

Local Hardman (some dude), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:54 (thirteen years ago) link

i think the surprising thing is how he seems like he should be some drive-by truckers type alt-country badass while his career trajectory is more miranda lambert/taylor swift

da croupier, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:54 (thirteen years ago) link

dude even did reality TV!

da croupier, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, obviously. But what was the lead-up. I never saw it. I'm def not up on my country as much as I should be. But it's not like MF Doom or anything where there was like three years of indie people doing one page features and Q&As, this is like full indiecrossover right away afaik?

dr. harbl's zing-along blog (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:56 (thirteen years ago) link

I even saw the Miranda Lambert leadup coming

losing your grip, dude!

(and haha i didn't know shit about this guy before everyone was like DIG THIS DOUBLE CD either)

da croupier, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:57 (thirteen years ago) link

might be the fact that he made a double CD that made people realize he was an Artist and not the new Keith Urban or something

Well, to be fair, so does Miranda Lambert.

what was the lead-up. I never saw it.

Well, yeah -- Lots of talk about that on the album's thread. The marketing and packaging deserve an award themselves. Seems like the positive critical response the previous album got convinced Johnson and/or Mercury Records to present the new one as an Important Conceptual Work Of Art, like no Nashville country album ever before. And it worked. Three-LP vinyl version is real gorgeous.
