Peter Hook tours "Unknown Pleasures"

What is more ridiculous, that Peter Hook has formed a band to play "Unknown Pleasures" in its entirety, that he his singing lead vocals, or that apparently he has ceded bass duties to someone else? I mean, I may still see it, but ... really.

They toured this in Melb last month (I think it was?), as "Peter Hook and Friends" or some excerable title. Apparently the gig started with some dull and boring 20-30 minute doco/movie thing on a screen and everyone was yelling "get on with it".

I'd go see a tour with Electronic, Revenge and The Other Two. That LTM reissue of One True Passion went a long way in convincing me Revenge wasn't the worst thing anyone from New Order had been involved in. FreeBass is clearly the worst thing any of them have ever done.

The recent Peter Hook and the Light gig at Manchester Cathedral was a triumphant re-assement of his early New Order back catalogue. In the atmospheric and perfect setting of the venue, the songs were played with an added edge that reinvigorated them and made them more than mere retreads.

Fortunately the gig was recorded and is due for release soon with the release of Peter Hook & The Light’s full live Manchester Cathedral concert of New Order’s “Movement” and “Power Corruption & Lies” and other singles from the 1981 to 83 period of both LP’s.

I'm not sure who wrote that review, but.

Catchy title though:

Is it only me, or was it a brilliant decision to make Rowetta lead singer of his band? She has a fucking great voice - and I'm really glad to see her get her just deserts as a lead singer after all these years.

So he & his backing band The Light continue with the two Substance compilations. Interesting interview where he is kind of sad that the relation to the other New Order members - esp. to Sumner, I guess - is so totally in shambles. I quite like the arrangements and the sound of the new interpretations of the 4 songs on the site. Even Love will tear us apart which I never wanted to hear again somehow still gets me here.

It can be sad when people do things to themselves.

I was keen to see the Substance tour, especially now that the backing band is basically Monaco, so Potts can presumably do the most Bernard-y vocal parts, but nobody else had the slightest interest

That's just weird, though the choice of Republic is intriguing. Didn't Stephen Hague famously nix a lot of his bass playing on that one?

I saw the latest tour last night. He is touring Unknown Pleasures and Closer bookended by various JD/NO tracks (last night, we got "ICB," "Dreams Never End," "Leave Me Alone," "Regret," "Crystal" and "True Faith" to start, and for an encore got "Warsaw," "Ceremony," "Transmission" and, of course, "Love Will Tear Us Apart"). It was a much, much better show than I expected, and also surprisingly emotional for me--I suppose some of it had to do with the fact that it had been 37 year to the day since I first saw New Order. The band is very tight, and his singing is much stronger than I would have given him credit for.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 18:04 (one year ago) link

Still boycotting Peter Hook since his horrible comments about Gillian and the way he acted towards the band when he left. He's a complete asshole who's essentially a casino act at this point living off two albums he was a part of 40 years ago. At least he isn't as bad as Morrissey (that we know of).

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 23:06 (one year ago) link

Other evidence for the prosecution:

a) faking Ian Curtis's signature on JD memorabilia
b) claiming Caroline Aherne abused *him* 20 years plus after their divorce, and, therefore...
c) failing to pay tribute to Aherne when she died
d) DJing from a Mixmag cd

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 18 August 2022 11:05 (one year ago) link

I saw the tour earlier in the year (in Metz, France). Like jimbeaux, I was pleasantly surprised by the band, but I disagree about Hooky's voice - he's no singer, really. I see the charge sheet set out above, and there's no denying it's a karaoke/tribute act, but I can't help it, I enjoyed it.

giraffe, Thursday, 18 August 2022 11:58 (one year ago) link

He's a complete asshole

Has that ever been in doubt? Both he and Sumner are pretty notorious douchebags. Hooky used to thrive on that image.

giraffe, I'm not saying he's a great singer, but since I had essentially zero expectations, I was pleasantly surprised.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 18 August 2022 12:29 (one year ago) link

Saw him last night, impressed they still managed to burn through both JD albums + a 3-song encore even with a rain delay of like 45 minutes after the initial New Order set.
