So - what about this neo-shoegaze band Tamaryn?

These guys probably don't need a whole thread but what the hell - this is the kind of stuff ILM should be all over. Particularly apt Mazzy Star/MBV revival which sounds very good to the 1992 teenager in me.

Even *I'm* starting to burn out a bit on that approach, though. Still, throw up a link or two to a key song if you like.

Wasn't the other Curtis brother that isn't in SVIIB playing with them for a while?

this is the single I think

"Inessential" covers this imo. Not that there's anything wrong with it.

i don't hate it but the drums and bass sound like shit

There are much better nuGazers out there (High Violets, Speck Mountain)

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 17 September 2010 00:51 (thirteen years ago) link

never really considered speck mountain nugaze but they definitely are wonderful

Really digging the new album despite the new direction which seems to be getting panned everywnhere (gothy new wave)

weird that it's getting panned — it sounds wonderful!

this new one reminds me of the rumskib album, which was really good and unfortunately a one-off... or maybe some classic-era IPR shoegaze?

Agreed! I didn't have any strong feelings about Tamaryn in the past, but the new one is tight.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 18 October 2015 05:20 (eight years ago) link

I love this album, it reminds me of Curve a LOT. I really didn't care for her previous incarnation at all - the idea of it appealed to me but hearing the last album left me very cold.

"Cranekiss" is such an underrated gem. Rarely does an artist appropriate 4AD stylings in such a refreshing way. "Intruder (Waking You Up)" pits warbled vibrato Cocteau Twins guitars against trip-hop beats to blissful effect.

If you're familiar with Jorge Elbrecht / lansing dreiden, you can hear him all over this

'Last' in particular really grew on me from that album.

nashwan, Thursday, 16 February 2017 22:12 (seven years ago) link

^ Love how the chorus of "Last" is sung an additional time each time it appears, so that the final chorus takes it through the roof.

Everything Moves Towards The Sun (Ross), Thursday, 16 February 2017 22:20 (seven years ago) link

Yeah this album is killer. My favorite of the last 5 years or so, tho I reocgnize the elemnts of pastiche that might be off- putting for people less into the source material.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 17 February 2017 13:08 (seven years ago) link

I come back to this a lot, more acts should be emulating peak-era Curve.

boxedjoy, Friday, 17 February 2017 23:08 (seven years ago) link

^ Sounds like I should probably get around to Curve then.

Everything Moves Towards The Sun (Ross), Sunday, 19 February 2017 20:52 (seven years ago) link

I see Rex Shelverton isn't on Cranekiss, and listening to his new band Light Fantastic it's pretty apparent his guitar work is what I am missing from Cranekiss. Didn't realize he'd left. His new band (Light Fantastic) sounds like early Sarah records jangle! I still like Cranekiss though.

Pubic Fruit

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 15 September 2017 10:30 (six years ago) link

Cocteau Twins 'Four Calendar Cafe'? Their lighter poppier sounds seems a closer fit...or yeah just listen to all CT works regardless.

nashwan, Friday, 15 September 2017 11:08 (six years ago) link

Nah, the muscular and sexy overtones are straight out of Curve

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 15 September 2017 13:53 (six years ago) link

early Curve recommendation seconded

Ross have you ever heard Ballet School? maybe a little off topic but I feel like they are to the Cocteaus what Tamaryn is to Curve

licorice - thanks for your recommendation with Curve, enjoying that album

Tempers seems to be mining the same vein (from 2017, I haven't heard the full EP Fundamental Fantasy), but any obvious guitars are buried in the mix:

My understanding is that she's working a new record for 2018 sometime.

Excited, given how much I loved the last one. But I’m really not feeling this new single. Sounds like generic early 90s pop-goth, not in a good way.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:39 (five years ago) link

Is Elbrecht involved?

calstars, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:54 (five years ago) link

Yes! Tamaryn also appeared on two songs on his (excellent) album last year.

Sad to say that most of the new album passed me by. It really felt a lot longer than its 35 minute length.

kitchen person, Saturday, 23 March 2019 04:50 (five years ago) link

I think she’s worked on a lot of the new Sky Ferreira stuff, interested to see how that turns out. Agree though that this new record didn’t really leave much of an impression, especially when compared to Cranekiss

monotony, Saturday, 23 March 2019 10:52 (five years ago) link

Like 'Victim Complex' for being only the first single off Propaganda's 1234 that should've been.

nashwan, Saturday, 23 March 2019 13:02 (five years ago) link

didn't realize the whole album was out. she must have different people running her PR

akm, Tuesday, 26 March 2019 13:19 (five years ago) link

It pains me to admit it, but this new album is frankly terrible. Generic and tuneless, this sounds like a 2nd tier pop-goth LP found in a 1987 bargain bin.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 4 April 2019 20:37 (five years ago) link

Angels of Sweat is a pretty good, but yeah... reminds me of Single Gun Theory or the pre-Curve Toni Halliday solo album (admittedly I didn't dig Cranekiss that much either)

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 4 April 2019 21:11 (five years ago) link

Love Single Gun Theory a ton (as well as the Jacqui Hunt solo/Ciive follow-ups). Their samples and new age/world influences set them apart, I thought. Made for great mixtape fodder back in the day, particularly "Phenomena". Was happy when SGT put out "The Monkey's Mask" soundtrack, even though it didn't lead to further work.

When people talk about albums mired in their era, the SGT discs still sound fresh to me, but that Toni solo disc is locked in 1989 (?). Play it least of the Curve & Dean solo discs.
