Re the "Hannett" tracks:

Obviously, he produced the first album, those tracks on "A Factory Quartet" being the last he produced? Would they make sense being grouped together?

And what is missing from this list of "DC/MH" plz:
2 tracks from "A Factory Sample"
"The Return Of"
Tracks from "A Factory Quartet"

ta.

Mark G, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 10:10 (eleven years ago) link

There's also the two tracks on the Benelux single "Lips that would kiss" / "Madeleine" which he produced for DC.

Rob M Revisited, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 10:28 (eleven years ago) link

Triffic.

So, all I'm missing (myself) is the Factory Quartet, and the one 'bonus' track on the 2nd pressing of the "Return" LP.

Mark G, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 10:32 (eleven years ago) link

Ha, I was about to reply regarding the bonus track on "The return of..." too. Going to check which version(s) I've got now.

Rob M Revisited, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 10:34 (eleven years ago) link

Don't apologise, Rob M - I love reading people ramble about Durutti Column!

This is the version of LC that I've got:

http://www.discogs.com/Durutti-Column-LC/release/130191

Around 8 CDs were reissued on Factory Once with bonus tracks but are now out of print. I need to work out if all the bonus material on the forthcoming 2cd set has already been released on the Factory Once versions.

Away to stick LC on the stereo now.

DC had the best coloured Factory hessian cassette boxes.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:00 (eleven years ago) link

Only just looked closely at the track listing of the new LC reissue, it seems very comprehensive of tracks from that era, so it's got the demos which were on the "Four Factory Records" 6 cd set, plus hard to track down things like "Party" and "The eye and the hand" from Crepescule comps, and all the EPs of that era like "Deux triangles". Has it got "Weakness and fever" on it? Yes, looks very very good, because some of those tracks are very hard to get these days. Nice. I've bought "LC" on vinyl, then the boxed cassette, then as part of the FACD224 4 cd set, then the Factory Once issue you have, then that 6 cd set then this new issue next year... God, six times then?

Rob M Revisited, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:05 (eleven years ago) link

Ah, if you have that FACD224 4CD box set, you have the 'bonus' "Return" track, apparently it's the only CD that has it.

Mark G, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:07 (eleven years ago) link

This is a bit of a weird admission, but I still dream from time to time about the Factory boxed cassettes - that I'm in a record shop and there's a whole load of them, in the right colours for the artists and the right fonts and everything. Haven't had that dream for a while, but it happens every year or so.

Rob M Revisited, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:11 (eleven years ago) link

Are they for albums you do not own, or ones that don't even exist?

Mark G, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:12 (eleven years ago) link

I love those boxes. I need the Quando Quango, Wim Mertens and the ACR ones. They are probably directly to blame for me developing a collector mentality as a teenager.

Yes Mark I have that bonus song it's also on one of the extra discs on the 6 cd set of the first four albums. Totally freaked me out the first time I played the cd, was expecting the quiet guitar piece I knew from my tape and then the drums and bass crash in. Of course in those pre internet days I just thought it was a mistake.

Yes, the dreams are about tapes that don't exist. I sold a lot of my tapes on ebay years ago, only have the DC and Quando and Railway Children ones left now, sold my Wim Mertens one for £190!

On a side point, why is the written track listing for "Another setting" in the wrong order on both the FACD 224 set and the Factory Once reissue? Anyone know?

Rob M Revisited, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:21 (eleven years ago) link

That picture of the tapes looked like my shelf once upon a time. :(

Rob M Revisited, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:23 (eleven years ago) link

Talking of Factory boxed cassettes that don't exist have you seen this?

I am using your worlds, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:29 (eleven years ago) link

That's very cool, I believe the Wim Mertens one is the most sought after box.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:35 (eleven years ago) link

Hard to find any clean New Order ones too.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:36 (eleven years ago) link

I have the 'Substance' one, two tapes yes.

Mark G, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:38 (eleven years ago) link

My Railway Children tape is sadly a little worse for wear, having had a sachet of soy sauce from a Pot Noodle dropped on it in my student days. That pic of Fact 24c is like a dream come true, literally!

Rob M Revisited, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:42 (eleven years ago) link

"Substance" boxed tape only available in Woolworths, iirc. Paid a fiver for it on the day of release.

Rob M Revisited, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:44 (eleven years ago) link

I loved those cassette boxes, along with the artwork it was a big part of what made gathering JD/NO releases very special.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:45 (eleven years ago) link

The only time I saw something similar to the Factory boxes was a Heaven 17 boxed tape of their remixes which was around the same time, 86 or 87, will have to google it - so someone somewhere at Virgin saw the Fac boxes and thought "Great idea, let's try it too!"

Rob M Revisited, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:49 (eleven years ago) link

Another Setting basically lives on my turntable.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 15:43 (eleven years ago) link

Oh that's just pushing my buttons like crazy.

Not sure what to make of this:

djh, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

I'd pay a large fee to see him live. Wish he'd take the Leonard Cohen route and tour for money.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 19:51 (eleven years ago) link

I think his health is a big issue at the moment - much as I'd love to see him tour regularly I can't see it happening. I'm a member of the DC group on Facebook and he's really struggling for money at the moment, selling headphones and other things - sad that he has to do that sort of thing, he has got good support around him but it makes you wonder how much Tony Wilson protected him from the real world over the years. This is my own assumption and not based on any knowledge.

On a lighter note, those postcards look great. And the reissue of "Short stories for Pauline" is essential stuff. Yes, I've got it al elsewhere but it's great to have it in one place.

Rob M Revisited, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 20:47 (eleven years ago) link

you'd think maybe Morrissey would throw him a few quid.

piscesx, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 20:57 (eleven years ago) link

^ That crossed my mind.

I guess the request seemed a) sad (on many levels) and b) unlikely to resolve anything.

To be fair, don't know any of his personal circumstances.

djh, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 21:56 (eleven years ago) link

The request is genuine and will resolve the matter of him not getting evicted from his house while recovering from a stroke hopefully. Whether VR knows this request is being made on his behalf, is another matter however.

Doran, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 22:56 (eleven years ago) link

I can't do links on here sorry, but there's a new twitlonger post relating to the donations for Vini which is actually quite heartening to read and very informative regarding his current situation and health. Could someone post it if possible, because it's worth knowing. Thank you.

Rob M Revisited, Thursday, 3 January 2013 22:44 (eleven years ago) link

The Twitlonger post from a couple of days ago

I've had it stood up by several sources in Manchester that his nephew is who he says he is and members of his current band have confirmed that he is in very bad shape at the moment unfortunately.

Doran, Thursday, 3 January 2013 22:58 (eleven years ago) link

http://www.twitlonger.com/show/kjhq9m

not sure if that'll work but I'll give it a go.

Rob M Revisited, Thursday, 3 January 2013 23:07 (eleven years ago) link

this story getting weirder and weirder.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-20931235

Influential guitarist Vini Reilly of the band The Durutti Column has spoken of his "embarrassment and humiliation" after fans sent £3,000 to help him pay his rent after he had three strokes.

Talcum Mucker, Monday, 7 January 2013 20:32 (eleven years ago) link

Not so weird, really... I know plenty of folks who would rather die than accept money from friends, let alone strangers.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Monday, 7 January 2013 20:41 (eleven years ago) link

Fair play to him.

djh, Monday, 7 January 2013 20:45 (eleven years ago) link

but his nephew has just posted on the DC facebook page that both he and Vini are upset at being misrepresented in the article, and posting a statement purported to be from Vini saying thanks for the donation...

Talcum Mucker, Monday, 7 January 2013 20:47 (eleven years ago) link

Looks like Vini misspoke during the interview, and said humiliated when he meant humbled... in any event, he's accepted the donations and paid off his debts with them, so that's good. The fact that he's living on disability benefits is less good.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 10 January 2013 17:09 (eleven years ago) link

Since I complained about their scattershot catalog, I figured I'd go ahead and come up with a non-lp comp, presented herewith, in order of release, excluding live tracks:

Durutti Column Odds and Ends, 1978-1986:

No Communication - A Factory Sample
Thin Ice (Detail) - A Factory Sample
Lips that Would Kiss - single A-side
Madeleine - single B-side
Sleep Will Come - From Brussels With Love
Piece For An Ideal - From Brussels With Love
Weakness & Fever - From Brussels With Love
For Mimi - A Factory Quartet
For Belgian Friends - A Factory Quartet
Self-Portrait - A Factory Quartet
Enigma – single A-side
Danny – single B-side
The Eye And The Hand - The Fruit Of The Original Sin
Party - The Fruit Of The Original Sin
Experiment In Fifth - The Fruit Of The Original Sin
One Christmas For Your Thoughts - Ghosts Of Christmas Past
Snowflakes - Ghosts Of Christmas Past
For Patti - single A-side
Favourite Painting - Deux Triangles EP
Zinni - Deux Triangles EP
Piece for Out of Tune Grande (sic) Piano - Deux Triangles EP
I Get Along Without You Very Well - single A-side
Love Fading - single A-side
For Noriko - single B-side
Goodbye - Say What You Mean EP
The Room - Say What You Mean EP
A Little Mercy - Say What You Mean EP
Silence - Say What You Mean EP
E.E. - Say What You Mean EP
Hello - Say What You Mean EP
The Sea Wall - Un Hommage A Margueritte Duras
Destroy, She Said - Un Hommage A Margueritte Duras
Take Some Time Out - Un Hommage A Margueritte Duras
Tomorrow – single A-side
All That Love and maths Can Do - single B-side
Florence Sunset – Greetings EP
San Giovanni Dawn – Greetings EP
For Friends In Italy – Greetings EP

That's everything up through "Valuable Passages", the period I'm most interested in at the moment. It turns out the upcoming 2CD reissue of "LC" gathers up about half of this and the rest is available on CD aside from the first two tracks and the "Love Fading" single.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 12 January 2013 01:35 (eleven years ago) link

LC reissue? I've missed something.

trayce war (electricsound), Saturday, 12 January 2013 02:56 (eleven years ago) link

Will be my 4th copy of LC, but fuck it. Need to have it.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 12 January 2013 03:33 (eleven years ago) link

I've always assumed that "Love fading" and "A silence" (issued as an extra track on the "Circuses and bread" reissue on LTM and on their "Short stories for Pauline" from last year) were the same song - Vini recycling his lyrics again. I could be wrong though,

Rob M Revisited, Saturday, 12 January 2013 07:00 (eleven years ago) link

wow, thanks for that list, Gerald.

brimstead, Saturday, 12 January 2013 07:53 (eleven years ago) link

Nice, was gonna hunt down th Factory Quartet double for those tracks.

Is "I get along without you" on CD then?

Mark G, Saturday, 12 January 2013 10:32 (eleven years ago) link

yes

trayce war (electricsound), Saturday, 12 January 2013 10:38 (eleven years ago) link

It's on the "Circuses and bread" LTM reissue. Another track from this era - 86 - is "The aftermath", which was on a compilation supporting animals (can't remember the full details) and is absolutely stunning.

Rob M Revisited, Saturday, 12 January 2013 12:30 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, "The Aftermath" falls between "Valuable Passages" and "Red Shoes" (which contains the Greetings EP) and thus is just out of my range. That'll start of the next odds and ends volume I compile!
