good idea. itt we talk about these bad lil teenage rappers from l.a. i've only listened to Earl Sweatshirt's album Earl, but I went on a downloading spree last night. it's all gleefully offensive in a very adolescent way, but i like some nihilism in my rap sometimes and they can spit.

the prod is def like what madlib does on madvillainy and then of course in the clipped rhyming about weed you can see mf doom

but there's also 2000s pop rap swagger & shit talking that is a huge part of wiz's music & some songs have that airy sort of quality that a lot of his mixtape tracks

it's not like the music is POST-wiz or anything but that's what it reminds me of in terms of shit that's popping right now

hardly a novel observation, but this makes me think that earl is an amazing writer, but def not the most charasmatic rapper around. staples brings a lot more personality to his (much less distinctive) verse.

four weeks pass...

US Rapper Tyler The Creator unleashes a torrent of hate on Sydney activist

I’m a 23-year-old psychology student from Sydney and in June this year, I was subjected to a horrific torrent of abusive tweets from fans of touring American rapper Tyler Okonma. I challenged Okonma’s lyrics which encourage rape and violence against women by vocally supporting a petition on change.org that suggested he shouldn’t be playing all-age shows.

At Tyler’s concert in Sydney the next day, he told his fans he hoped my children got STDs, and “dedicated” songs to me that included lyrics like “punch a bitch in her mouth just for talkin' shit”.

The abuse started almost instantly. First a drip, then a rush, then a flood. I felt physically sick. He had 1.7 million fans, and it felt like every single one of them had some violence stored up for me - a promise to assault me, the threat that they would rape me, an expression of hatred for my life and my freedom.

It was terrifying at first, and then I started to feel totally disconnected from myself. When one of them said he was going to mutilate my body, I couldn’t comprehend that he could be talking about me. The messages were coming at such a rate I couldn’t keep up.

I received threats from Okonma’s fans constantly for two weeks and I still get the odd tweet of abuse today. In a tone eerily similar to Okonma’s lyrics they sent messages like: “shut the f--- up cuz if I see you on the streets I’m gonna snatch u in a alley and force this d--- in you,” “how’s that for promoting rape? I’m f---ing DOING it! So watch ur back, but ur families will be first” and “you know you secretly want @f---tyler to forcibly penetrate your anal cavity”.

Good p4k piece on 10th anniversary of first OF mixtape: https://pitchfork.com/levels/found-family-how-odd-future-changed-everything/

But more than clothing and cover stories, the collective’s greatest triumph is just being here in the present, still actively participating in the musical conversations they helped start. From the days of that first mixtape 10 years ago, or even when they wowed critics and fans in the years that followed, there was no indication these scatalogical teens would see such levels of notoriety, let alone the Grammy stages they dreamed of. (Tyler, the Creator, the Internet, and Frank Ocean have all earned nominations in recent years, with Channel Orange bringing home a trophy.) Like N.E.R.D. and Kanye West before them, masses of artists and fans alike found belonging and freedom in how Odd Future chose to create and live. Their legacy is one that demands we bask in complicated truths, reminding us that nurturing the parts that don’t fit is how any culture moves forward.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 31 July 2018 16:37 (four years ago) link

too bad none of them ever actually made a great front-to-back album. Ocean came closest I guess.

y'all are shortchanging the whole crew. Earl has made 2 excellent albums, Tyler has been up and down but at least is interesting, Syd/Internet's made a couple excellent albums, Frank is obviously on his own journey, but 'nostalgia, ultra' is a classic and 'channel orange' is good, and the rest of these dudes do their thing. 4 big-time, relevant artists out of a crew of 8-10 is pretty good. never mind both the short- and long-term impact they had in terms of the industry, the internet, youth culture, etc. they altered things forever!

i'm not even a huge fan, but given what they were when they started and where they're at now, the story of OF is one of major success and influence.

alpine static, Tuesday, 31 July 2018 21:43 (four years ago) link

I can agree that they were successful and influential and still believe, as the article itself notes, that the actual music was never consistently impressive

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 31 July 2018 21:45 (four years ago) link

our culture is in a post-music place now, and they had something to do with it. I don't like the outcome, but I can't deny that that's what happened either.

The logical conclusion of the original Odd Future trajectory. (Thankfully Tyler's actual solo output has turned out to be much more interesting than I'd have anticipated.)

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 October 2018 16:11 (four years ago) link

Of course. Given Tyler's admiration for Pharell and the Neptunes it was only natural that he would eventually go the same direction as Pharell would.

a few months ago I was just drifting around my digital archive via sonos and ended up listening to, and enjoying an ep by 'hodgy beats'.
I had no idea as who/where/what I was listening to and sonos gives no indication as to the directory in which the files are located.
came as a shock when i came to realise the source.
basically many years ago i had 'found' a folder on mk1s laptop of odd future related releases and nicked them off him, and had completely forgotten about them.
