thought it'd be interesting to have just these songs face off against each other, since so often you kind of get her '90s material or her '00s material or just her singles or songs from a particular album ranked against each other, but not specifically her Timbo collabs, which are pretty much all gold.

my top 5:
Are You That Somebody?
One In A Million
More Than A Woman
I Care 4 U

More Than A Woman
If Your Girl Only Knew

between these two for me

i can feel it coming in the air tonight, so frickin' bad (goole), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 20:27 (seven years ago) Permalink

those nas and ginuwine collabs are really excellent (and quite overlooked, esp "you won't see me tonight") but ultimately my vote here is "if your girl only knew" vs "i care 4 u" vs "are you that somebody?"

best bassline ever vs i'll come...i'll come...in a hurry vs that wink in the video

"one in a million" is one of my three favorite songs ever & the only song ever to make me cry, so that

try again would prob be #2, maybe we need a resolution #3

i don't really know, this is giving me a headache

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 25 August 2010 20:28 (seven years ago) Permalink

"i care 4 u" is such an incredibly affecting scenario, cuz it's double heartbreak, the boy she's singing to who's been thrown over and her own unrequited love that's only been heightened by that development. so sad.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 20:29 (seven years ago) Permalink

and how despite both of those, the emotion that shines the strongest is her generous tenderness and willing to comfort him

yeah i'm listening to "I Care 4 U" right now and it's really moving. the run of posthumous singles in the year after she died was so great and so bittersweet.

Great poll! I wish I could put money on this, because I suspect "More Than a Woman" is going to come out on top.

im thinkin TRY AGAIN for the "you dont wanna throw it all away" bridge

69, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 20:35 (seven years ago) Permalink

i would take that bet, because in lists and polls that song always seems to get beat by "Resolution" or "Try Again" or the '90s hits (xpost)

I am Whiney and I am PARODYING YOUR VIEWPOINT IN ALL CAPS (some dude), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 20:36 (seven years ago) Permalink

Although not a Timbo production, my favorite Aaliyah moment is "Rock Da Boat," which is erotic in an otherworldly way.

So many great songs, I mean... fuck me. What a fucking asshole that pilot wassssssssssssssssssssss.

I'm thinking We Need a Resolution will win this unless people go for the obvious Try Again. All the songs could win for all I care, she's flawless.

I Care 4 U... sweetest, saddest thing I ever heard, and it gets my vote. Always chose it as my favorite Aaliyah tune, but it's not even about the songs is it. She could make me cry/scream/sweat performing any song, I think I wept when I watched her do the Christmas Song.

abcfsk, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 21:00 (seven years ago) Permalink

imo "We Need A Resolution" and "Try Again" are kinda overrated, not bad of course but i prefer pretty much all the other big singles to those 2

I am Whiney and I am PARODYING YOUR VIEWPOINT IN ALL CAPS (some dude), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 21:14 (seven years ago) Permalink

i think they're both incredible tracks but overrated vis-à-vis the rest of her catalogue, in that there's no reason why they should be predictable winners, but they always are - it's more that the rest of her songs are underrated by casual fans ;_;

"erica kane" is cool, i didn't know it was a single. i liked that she did this character study of this outlaw femme fatale anti-heroine, then i realised belatedly it was about (eri)COCAINE, do you see, which was a bit disappointing.

I find the repeated chorus of "Erica Kane" kinda boring; it's like she ran out of song to sing.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 22:31 (seven years ago) Permalink

"Erika Kane" was an outtake originally, only released post-humously because it constituted "new" material at that point.

I wouldn't describe myself as a casual fan but for me it's between "One In A Million" and "We Need A Resolution" - if these are "overrated" it's for very good reason.

Of the songs listed:

1. One In A Million
2. We Need A Resolution
3. Are You That Somebody?
4. I Care 4 U
5. Sticking Chickens
6. Final Warning
7. Try Again

The song missing is "Come Back In One Piece", her awesome collabo with DMX.

Tim F, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 22:57 (seven years ago) Permalink

Leaning towards Resolution.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 22:57 (seven years ago) Permalink

1. One In A Million
2. We Need A Resolution
3. Are You That Somebody?
4. I Care 4 U

IMO these 4 tower over everything else in her discography with the exceptions of "Never No More" and "It's Whatever".

Which is not to dismiss the excellent "Rock The Boat", "If Your Girl Only Knew" et. al. but with the above 4 when I'm listening to them any of them could be the finest song ever made. It's amazing Aaliyah produced so many songs in this category, really.

I think "Try Again" was maybe slightly overrated at the time - mainly because lots of rock critic types (myself included) jumped onto Timbaland/Aaliyah between 1998 and 2000 and "Try Again" was the first new thing from them - but I get the impression its rep has receded slightly to a level more appropriate to its actual status as excellent but not best-thing-ever.

for the next throbbing minutes (corey), Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:51 (seven years ago) Permalink

As many Hot 100 chart policies have been modified over the years, one rule always remained constant: songs were not eligible to enter the Hot 100 unless they were available to purchase as a single. However, on December 5, 1998 the Hot 100 changed from being a "singles" chart to a "songs" chart. During the 1990s, a growing trend in the music industry was to promote songs to radio without ever releasing them as singles. It was claimed by major record labels that singles were cannibalizing album sales, so they were slowly phased out.

The Reverend, Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:53 (seven years ago) Permalink

ah, well that explains it

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:54 (seven years ago) Permalink

"one in a million" and "4 page letter" peaked at #7 and #59 on the airplay chart, respectively. "hot like fire" did not place on that chart.

Well, 'One in a Million' would be significantly more awesome than it already is, but I think there would be enough left on the s/t for it to remain pretty damn good.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 09:03 (seven years ago) Permalink

i mean the reason the s/t has more of a classic rep than OIAM isn't that OIAM isn't as good, at its best, it's cuz there's basically no filler or anything less than great on the s/t. also, my views are coloured by "try again" being on international copies of the s/t
