slumberlands back catalogue is massive, but what is good from it? i only have the stereolab and stuff and the excellent Powderburns 12" from 1990 (kind of like if stereolab were degenerate motherfuckers that lived under the sidewalk)

gareth, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Velocity Girl's six song ep. I think Henry's Dress were on Slumberland as well, back before they bacame the Aislers Set.

jel --, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

and Henry's Dress were a million times more rocking than the Aislers Set!

jel --, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Also Lorelei. Oh, Lorelei. And Why Popstars Can't Dance = top- shelf among the vast number of striving-to-be-classic indiepop comps to come from that era.

nabisco, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Rocketship! Maybe I'll post more on why it's great when I'm not working, but at the very least I wanted to be the first one to mention it.

Miranda, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

If this was "POO - Slumberland", it would be Black Tambourine's _Complete Recordings_. That voice! Those drums! THAT NOISE!! "For Ex-Lovers Only," "Black Car," and "Throw Aggi off the Bridge" are all incredible. Free mp3s on the Slumberland site here: http://www.dropbeat. com/slrland/slr37.html

Ernest, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's pretty much all good (speaking as someone who owns pretty much the entire catalogue). Favourites are the first Lilys 7", VG's "My Forgotten Favourite", the Black Tambourine stuff, the very, very excellent Ropers album, and of course the Aislers Set. The only Slumberland stuff that isn't completely excellent are the Honeybunch and Glo Worm singles, which while good aren't quite as good as everything else.

That Powderburns 12" is quite fantastic. I spent years looking for it, too, and was tres chuffed when I finally tracked it down.

electric sound of jim, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah rocketship, dustin reske is some sort of unknown genius, 'a certain smile, a certain sadness' is like early stereolab mixed with 'ecstasy and wine'-era mbv only more perfect and then there are all of the fantastic singles(not all on slumberland) as well including the greatest pop song ever 'your new boyfriend' which is on the 'why popstars can't dance' cd. the velocity girl cd on slumberland is their peak, the hood records are also excellent. and of course the magnificent aislers set.

keith, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I wanna go on some more about the Ropers. The "All The Time" album is a genuine lost pop classic. After being out of print for ages and ages you can get the CD again, and I recommend you do. The earlier EP is also brilliant. The main Roper recently resurfaced in The Still who are also very good, if not quite as special as the Ropers.

electric sound of jim, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Jane Pow is one of the great long-lost power pop albums of the ages. Kinda poorly recorded, but more than overcome by its earnestness. Totally recommended

Chris Barrus, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Who can tell me about the Steamkings? "Darkest Star" on the Popstars comp is absolutely killer single.

nabisco, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

They were meant to have a proper release on Slumberland but it never happened. I gather they had a few LPs but I don't know anything beyond that..

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm late on this but everyone should get the Rocketship album. Supposedly a comp cd of the singels may be released someday. Not sure if there will ever be a new rocketship album though. Also, the steamkings, they had a couple albums, one recently issued on Not Lame, kind of powerpop with helium boy vocals. Not bad but not essential.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on with Slumberland at the moment? There's a handful of records they're meant to have put out ages ago (KG[fr], Acetate Zero, McTells, etc etc) that have never appeared, and they're only doing the vinyl for the new Aislers. Is Mike phasing the label out? Any ideas?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 03:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

I really really hope that the stuff mentioned is going to come out, but it kind of seems like it's not going to happen. Nothing has been released by the label for more than a year (I think).

More people need to hear KG. Lo-fi Jesus and Mary Chain style pop with great song titles (example: "emilie, would you let me taste your mouth if i record your band?").

Sorry, bad at the descriptions, but my 3 KG singles are near the top of the list of my most prized possessions. And the fact that one of them is warped means I need a digital copy.

Miranda, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 04:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

KG is great - which of your singles is warped?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 05:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

The one with Stuka on it. This is 987, right? (just moved, so all my stuff is in boxes and I can't find it). And do you know if KG has done anything else in the same vein after those 7". I have the electronic type album, which is ok, but I'd really like more guitar based stuff.

that's good news, i'm curious as to what they might be putting out. a lot of the new pop bands put out by formerly excellent labels aren't too good at all (the tedious Kiddo on Microindie, the boring Liberty Ship on Matinee....)

I had heard several Aislers Set tracks before, even seen 'em live, but only recently was I smacked upside the head when I heard MP3s for "Long Division" and "Hit the Snow" which I now play on repeat. Are the albums pretty solid? Should I buy the lot?

the new rocketship album is not on slumberland (maybe clairecords? you definitely get it through tonevendor.com). i've not heard it but also would not be surprised if it was just okay. his ambient 12" (garden of delights) was fine, but now "a certain smile...".

i also hope the how 7" and the crabapples 7" lead to more records from slumberland, but i'm not holding my breath. the crabapples don't seem to active and both these records are from recordings that were put to tape a while ago. i've heard rumors of more how recordings that haven't seen the light of day. hopefully they make it out eventually because what's been released so far is stellar.

viva slumberland!

i share yr enthusiasm. i love slumberland. but since the heyday of henry's dress, rocketship, black tambourine, and lorelei, did they put out anything of significance other than that incredible aislers set/the how split 7"?

I actually quite like the new Rocketship.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 21:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Or anyway I really really like about 2/3 of the tracks on it -- it's fascinating how he can push his stuff forward stylistically in really grand and ambitious ways while still sounding loose and bedroomy about it (sometimes to the point of annoyance). "The Foxes' Teeth," "Our New Track," "The Scene Selection," "The Passersby," "You're Too Young" -- really attached to a lot of these. But the Blow will probably get more attention than this.

Keyth, is your friend Lauren? If so, I had a cassette with the same demos. I used to trade mix tapes with her as part of a Prodigy usergroup (!) waaaay back in the day. As a kid growing up in the middle of heartland knowhere, she turned me on to a galaxy of stuff I probably never would have found out about otherwise, so I owe her some major props. last year's Veronica Falls album was AMAZING. top 5 of the year for me. but i love love love indie-pop...

i probably would've spent more time looking into some older stuff but worried i was gonna lose the sale prices.

alpine static, Monday, 3 November 2014 16:40 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I love both Veronica Falls albums. I already have those, but I did pick up the Proper Ornaments LP, side project from the male VF singer/guitarist. It didn't do much for me when it first came out but it's been growing on me a lot the last couple of weeks. He also has a great other side project, Ultimate Painting, with a new album not on Slumberland, check it out). Also got:

Aislers Set - Terrible Things Happen (not sure why I don't have this already; I loved the other two albums back then)
Girls Names - both LPs (really like the first one, LOVE the second one -- it's like an indie pop Seventeen Seconds)
Crystal Stilts - In Love With Oblivion
Frankie Rose - both LPs
Parasites - Something to Hold Onto single

Kinda regret not getting either of the Weekend LPs.

early rejecter, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 03:04 (nine years ago) link

the proper ornaments is probably my favourite Slumberland thing they've done for a while. the tony molina is awesome but it's a reissue and also should have twice as many songs on it

the literature album is nice enough but it's like they have shaved off all their interesting edges to "slumberlandize" their sound which is disappointing.

did not know that about the ultimate painting album, interesting! trouble in mind (who put it out) is an excellent label

Teenage is one of my favorite songs of the past few years, and the rest isn't far behind. "Driving late at night, I let you listen to the music you like. Then I'll drop you home." <3<3

I listened to that Ultimate Painting album three or four times and found it pleasant, but I wasn't wowed. Certainly not in the same league as the past couple VF and Mazes albums. I will revisit, though.

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/arts/music/pressplay.html?ref=music

NY Times listening thing for another Slumberland band:

It’s hard to get a bead on Evans the Death after just one song. The young British rock group veers from folksy strumming to harmony-driven pop to screaming punk rock. They are, however, Londoners through and through.

Whatever that last sentence means

curmudgeon, Friday, 6 March 2015 20:30 (nine years ago) link

It means "Either way, it ultimately just sounds like Coldplay."

Evan, Friday, 6 March 2015 20:52 (nine years ago) link

It doesn't though. It skews a lot earlier, to Britpop, Madchester, hints of No Depression even. First song is called "Intrinsic Grey," second one "Terrified," and so on, and the whole thing is unmistakably poverty stricken in a way I haven't encountered in a while. And because Slumberland often releases albums in nifty pairs, the new one by Young Guv, which is Ben Cook from Fucked Up doing an Exploding Hearts type thing, is good too.

Cheap Tissue (from LA) as CRIME... who absolutely killed it

and then!

The Umbrellas as My Bootleg Valentine. No Loveless songs, just pure jangle noise pop from the 80s. Amazingly recreated. There were about 50 people there, some real olds (older than me!) and then a ton of youth which was great to see.

The Umbrellas just released a new record and single (not-MBV related) so I grabbed a copy.
