i wanted to start a thread for this because i think it's really great.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 18:04 (nine years ago) link

the beats are so smoove

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 18:05 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, I love this album – have played it obsessively for two weeks.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 17 August 2010 18:08 (nine years ago) link

this is pleasantly compensating for my increasing disappointment w/big boi (nb i actually bother to buy like 5 hip-hop albums a year so i gotta pick my spots)--they're both in my car these days and it's been no trouble choosing which one to put on.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 18:13 (nine years ago) link

i really like how unnatural he can sound rapping abt the standard signifiers (money/cars/girls/etc.)--like a lot of the songs can be read as these blazed daydreams of some guy chillin in his room in nola.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 18:15 (nine years ago) link

That sounds right.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 17 August 2010 18:17 (nine years ago) link

also: the beats and musical backdrops are way more detailed than I expected.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 17 August 2010 18:18 (nine years ago) link

Liking what I'm hearing.

jaymc, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 18:33 (nine years ago) link

I love the disc, but I actually don't think he sounds that odd rapping about money/cars/girls.

altered boners (rennavate), Tuesday, 17 August 2010 20:11 (nine years ago) link

he definitely has a lackadaisical, circular flow that works for him, tho i disagree that the beats are a selling point here

need to listen again tho

be my anchor baby (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 17 August 2010 20:25 (nine years ago) link

i don't know what else he's done but i think this is super funky--i believe i'm hearing a lot of live bass on it which is rad

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 20:42 (nine years ago) link

i said i'd quit smokin these beats but i relapsed

i think it's hilarious that after quoting "hard in da paint" he momentarily slips into "b.m.f." as if to illustrate that no one can tell the difference between lex luger beats

be my anchor baby (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 17 August 2010 21:02 (nine years ago) link

i love that "the day" just sounds like somebody took a just blaze beat and notched it down to 70%

huge rong challop

that said, i was surprised how disappointed I was w/ how his sound worked w/ currensy's here. this record is not my favorite currensy material i gotta say

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 00:06 (nine years ago) link

'this aint no mixtape' -- higher than 30 & the joint one w/ wiz from last year are dope too

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 00:49 (nine years ago) link

i love the production on this album (the live instruments are a great touch) but I still don't "get" curren$y completely... he's obviously a goo rapper but his delivery/voice is just soooooooo monotonous and boring. i feel like all of the people who've jacked his style (wayne, wiz, etc.) do "curren$y" better than curren$y does

^yea that is otm imo

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 02:08 (nine years ago) link

Don't hear the monotony at all -- sounds like concentration to my ears.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 02:39 (nine years ago) link

yeah the laziness in his voice is 100% an atmospheric stoner affectation imo

damn, for some reason i read the word "hotel" into that post, which is entirely key to his aesthetic

k this album rulez

plate of dinosaurs (San Te), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 04:26 (nine years ago) link

this album is better than i thought, but i really love the dynamic that him & wiz have

be my anchor baby (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 05:11 (nine years ago) link

the thing that's great about him is that it's almost impossible to tell where lines begin and end... he's sort of like someone who raps much faster, except obv currensy is languid as fuck

be my anchor baby (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 05:16 (nine years ago) link

yeah he just has these run on based or craig finn lines where there isn't really meter he just goes in

FRIDGED WAG MANPAIN syndrome (zorn_bond.mp3), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 05:27 (nine years ago) link

I think these beats are gorgeous, languorous things that are actually really interesting if you examine them closely. That statement about Ski is def challops, J0rdan.

FRIDGED WAG MANPAIN syndrome (zorn_bond.mp3), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 06:00 (nine years ago) link

thinkin that is exactly why the new record is not a good representative of his style

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 06:02 (nine years ago) link

yeah he really has found a near perfect balance between rambling and a precise flow & then sometimes he'll hit you with a sliver of a crystal clear image that kind of stops you in your tracks

be my anchor baby (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 06:04 (nine years ago) link

like on the "super high" remix when he goes "chronic twisted up like fingers and gang signs"

be my anchor baby (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 06:05 (nine years ago) link

come to think of it, i wish more beats on this album were like "super high" -- more precise and languid, and less busy

be my anchor baby (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 06:06 (nine years ago) link

ha sudden memory of late 2008 riding the bus mumbling to myself

wiz definitely isn't the more seasoned rapper -- i could see how people could like him more, but he can come off as too much of a goofball at times
