Very interested to hear given the last few things they've done have been more experimental for want of a better word.

hey dudes. anybody check this out yet? is it worth the ~$10?

markers, Saturday, 9 October 2010 19:18 (thirteen years ago) link

yes

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 9 October 2010 19:30 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean, i haven't digested all of it yet, but glitter rocks -- it's really a nice example of how to combine shards of noise with melody. and a few other cuts i've spent time with have a similar vibe.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 9 October 2010 19:31 (thirteen years ago) link

ah dope -- thanking u. still might check it out

markers, Sunday, 10 October 2010 03:31 (thirteen years ago) link

i like this a lot! the opener "Life Prowler" is awesome, one of my fav songs of the year.

Z S, Sunday, 10 October 2010 03:44 (thirteen years ago) link

awesome! i'm glad you guys think this is good. i think i'll head out to grab it later today

markers, Sunday, 10 October 2010 16:31 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost

The packaging/artwork/booklet/etc look good, but I wish they had a low-frills "budget" edition. Should be standard operating procedure imo

Z S, Sunday, 10 October 2010 18:50 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't mean to be flippant by saying this, but my guess is that the labels consider the CD to be the "budget" edition and the vinyl to be for the hardcore physical media enthusiast who's willing to pay a little extra for some extra stuff since they're already going for a more, uh, fancy media format in the first place

markers, Sunday, 10 October 2010 18:53 (thirteen years ago) link

that being said, yeah, it would be nice

Common Heat

I'm not sure if there is much of a market for people who want the vinyl AND aren't interested in the packaging unless you have a $50 deluxe version and a $14 - $20 version.

Or enough of a market, I should say.

Really? There's no market for people who want the new lp by a favorite band for <$15?

Z S, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 02:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Wait, that was a response to markers. So drunk sorry!

Z S, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 02:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Its OK. Markers has a point, except I don't think its a universal opinion among labels that CDs are the "budget" item. CDs still can have beautiful packaging, and LPs can still have shitty packaging. My point was that they wouldn't put effort into multiple versions unless there were more dramatic distinctions between them.

CDs and downloads are more convenient, so the attraction to vinyl for most current buyers is packaging/collectibility and sound quality (my sound system is old so my vinyl doesn't even sound very good).

Satisfying the few consumers that want their vinyl with vinyl packaging would most likely be a waste of money for labels. Electronica 12"s on the other hand classically have blank sleeves because why would a DJ care? I feel like that is more of a tradition now than a reason.

I'm late to this, but it's a doozy of a record! I'm feeling it dawgzz!!!!!!

kornrulez6969, Friday, 5 November 2010 04:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I really really love it. I mean, I always liked No Age (enough to buy their first 5 EPs+Nouns. Missed out on Weirdo Rippers for some reason), but I would never have thought they'd make my album of the year. But this is pretty much it. Skinned, Valley Hump Crash, Life Prowler, so so so awesome.

Z S, Saturday, 6 November 2010 23:38 (thirteen years ago) link

what's good after the first few songs? i get so stuck on them i tend to bypass/ignore the rest of the album. sometimes single-song recommendations help (this is what's happened with the new deerhunter disc for me).

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 6 November 2010 23:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Yep, I used to just listen to the first 4 over and over too!

Start with "Skinned", played as loudly as is socially acceptable. I also love "Valley Hump Crash", but I think it sounds best when played in the context of the album, after the instrumental "Katerpillar".

Z S, Sunday, 7 November 2010 00:30 (thirteen years ago) link

will do, tonight. thx.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 7 November 2010 00:31 (thirteen years ago) link

also highly recommended is the title track off of the "Losing Feeling" EP that came out last year, if you haven't heard it. Once it kicks into the second half it's like KABOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM

Z S, Sunday, 7 November 2010 00:50 (thirteen years ago) link

Common heat & valley hump crash ftw

billstevejim, Sunday, 7 November 2010 00:55 (thirteen years ago) link

two months pass...

this has suddenly started to grow on me

they're kind of a boring band but that can be nice sometimes

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 20:35 (thirteen years ago) link

Beautiful background music. The album reminds me of what a thirty-minute "Here Come The Warm Jets" (the song, not album) would sound like.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 20:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Really really like this.

Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 21:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Really couldn't get into this new one. Weirdo Rippers is the one for me still. Nouns had its moments but never reached the highs of Weirdo Rippers and this new one is just a big load of nothing. I dunno what happend, they had loads of energy before and its all gone now. Hope they just took a sneeky left turn and they have it still left in them somewhere. Same goes for HEALTH tbh, their last album sucked as well but the first one was full of power and energy. Both bands still deliver live mind, well they did last time I check a year and a bit ago...

two years pass...

i don't have anything interesting to say about this other than i like it but i wish the singer wasn't so *indie* about it

the late great, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 21:11 (ten years ago) link

i like it better when the vocals are shoutier / punkier

the late great, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 21:12 (ten years ago) link

isn't this their new jersey? besides its lack of 'hits'...

i also enjoy in line skateing (spazzmatazz), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 22:37 (ten years ago) link

What happened to em?

Marcus / Xgau - Whose Century? (broom air), Thursday, 16 May 2013 00:36 (ten years ago) link

They're recording the follow-up now. I need it so bad.
