previously: follow-ups to the U.S. #1s of 2001

caveats: the follow-up to the follow-up to Janet Jackson’s “Doesn’t Really Matter” and the follow-up to Destiny’s Child’s “Independent Women Part 1” were covered in 2001 poll, and there was no immediate follow-up to Sisqo’s “Incomplete” or Christina Aguilera’s “Come On Over Baby”

this list feels very much like the tail end of the '90s, which was a much less interesting decade for chart-toppers to me than the '00s, so this might be the last of these polls unless people really want to see them or someone else wants to pick up the torch. looks like a 2 horse race between DC and Madonna (I vote for Madonna).

I don't recall a single one of these

i liked a lot of these, strangely. "don't tell me" was my fav, but "if you're gone" and "this is promise you" were both actually quite good for adult contemporary fodder. "come back in one piece" was also really good and surely deserved to chart. i remember seeing the "put your lights on" video on vh1 a bit and it was actually one of the noteworthy tracks on that annoyingly/undeservingly omnipresent album. xtina's ballad was good for what it was -- space jam soundtrack filler cover.

"Don't Tell Me" over "Come Back in One Piece" ("Sir Nose D'voidoffunk" is top 5 basslines ever imo) > "Crybaby"

to me Music sounds like an envoi -- it's the last time the mass audience and critics both took her seriously. Her subsequent career consists of aberrations (i.e. "Hung Up").

one year passes...

This is a great series of threads, much better memory-joggers than #1s...this is the stuff that made up a lot more of the background of the radio back then.

I would have voted for "If You're Gone," which I've always thought had a great hook, probably the least annoying Matchbox 20 song ever. Up until this moment I'd almost totally forgotten about "Put Your Lights On," except as something I automatically say when someone is driving around at dusk without their lights on. The video is kind of hilarious insofar as Santana looks like he is begging for this footage to be used in a "shreds" YouTube thing....
