P4k has the tracklist and wonderful cover art for Interpol's self-titled fourth LP:

they do make nice sleeves don't they

insert your favorite discriminatory practice here (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 15:46 (thirteen years ago) link

The album art for their first two records was appropriate and functional, but art for the past two records seriously veers into some smh territory.

ksh, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 15:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Also, for anyone who hasn't heard yet, Carlos D isn't in the band anymore.

ksh, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 15:49 (thirteen years ago) link

disagree, I totally dug the Our Love to Admire sleeve. but I feel like everyone hated on that record but me - it wasn't as oppressively dour as the previous two, I appreciated the flashes of humor, irony, etc.

insert your favorite discriminatory practice here (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 15:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Except for "Pace Is The Trick," I thought the record was pretty abysmal. But I have trouble telling whether or not that's just because the production is terrible or because the songs are lacking and the production is terrible.

ksh, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 15:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Unintentional, I assure you.

I always thought they were useless apart from a couple of songs. Paul Banks' timbre and lyrics are college radio station deejay incarnate.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 15:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Our Love To Admire was boring and stuff

ksh, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 16:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't have a problem with the timbre, but agree that loads of Banks' lyrics come off as clumsy and poorly constructed, but I think this is true of all their records, not just the third one. He does hit some good lines though, and occasionally some great ones (Next Exit for ex.), and what some people seem to take as horrible failings/flailing on Our Love to Admire I respond to more lighteartedly, there are songs that seem a bit funnier/more knowing.

I don't think these guys are great or anything - it's all of a piece and completely predictable - but they do reliably turn out a handful of sturdy songs on each album and that works for me

I still think the first record and Antics are pretty great.

Interpol - Our Love to Admire (Capitol)

After Interpol debuted in 2002 with Turn Out the Bright Lights, there wasn't really anywhere to go but down...and down they went. Antics followed, though it was little more than the document of a band long on confidence and short on ideas. Now we have Our Love to Admire, and confidence has become arrogance. Interpol knows now that people will buy anything with their name on it, so the con is officially on. Don't be surprised if the fourth album is just a peanut butter & doo-doo sandwich mashed inside a jewel case.

Me. 2007.

they always seem funny in interviews, way more than say the strokes or whoever, constant pisstakers. so yeah the humour is intentional i'd say.

their appearance in many an end of decade poll right near the top for the first album seems to have revived a lot of interest in the band. also they seem to be handling carlos' departure well:

I actually really like this one, which is more than I can really say for Antics or the last one. Personally, I'd rate them about like this:

Turn On the Bright Lights - 9.3 (still one of my favorite albums of last decade, questionable lyrics and all)
Antics - 7.2 (was a huge disappointment at the time, but it has grown on me a bit)
Our Love to Admire - 6.8 (this never really clicked with me at all)
Interpol - 8.0ish (still early goings, don't see it really climbing a whole lot higher though)

d00d, I actually really like the first two Interpol records! there was a period from, like, fall 2008 to the beginning of 2009 where that's what I listened to the most

markers, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 04:15 (thirteen years ago) link

then I listened to Our Love To Admire, didn't like it -- did like the Banks solo record, but it doesn't touch either of the first two Interpol LPs. looks like this one isn't gonna be that great, but we'll see

markers, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 04:16 (thirteen years ago) link

I think there's a certain downhill trend:

Turn On the Bright Lights - 9,0
Antics - 8,4 (definitely a grower, but after it clicked it's magical)
Our Love to Admire - 7,7 (a few standout tracks and sometimes a bit dull, but still great)
Interpol - 7,0 - (first half is more than promising, second half is pedestrian, expect the great closing track)

zeus, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 07:49 (thirteen years ago) link

really really dug both their first two albums as well. and I love their lyrics.

six years pass...

incredibly depressing interview with Carlos from last October that I just heard last night. goes in depth about the making of the s/t record and how he lost his mind and left the band. apparently he decided to leave, then recorded all of his bass and keyboard parts and gave them to the engineer, and never saw the band again. so the s/t record is vastly different than what it was "supposed to be"... thank goodness, I love the first half of this record so much, "Summer Well" is as good as anything on Antics. Interpol trying to go symphonic was bad news. Carlos says their goal going into the s/t record was to "make our Kid A."
