S/D: Ultravox

The Japan thread got me thinking, and I went back (yes I did) to see if they were anywhere in S/D, and it appeared they weren't. I'm quite partial to the first 3 albums, especially the very harsh HA HA HA, but my younger brother likes their smoother VIENNA side. Myself, I also find much to like in their later music, but nothing really meaty. Were they under-or-un-rated in their time? I actually saw them live around the time of VIENNA, but drink blurred it and time has dulled it further. I recall a nice stage set and having a good time, but that's about it (didn't change my world live like, say, Slayer did).

This one's easy: search John Foxx, destroy Midge Ure.

briania, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I could not then, and cannot now, fathom the appeal that John Foxx has for so many. Search Vienna & especially Rage in Eden. And the stage sets for the "Quartet" tour which were designed by some big-name architecture guy whose name escapes me.

"Rage in Eden" is the best one pretty easily -- no black metal band could ever hope to so accurately capture the sound of fascism as does the song "The Voice." What to speak of "Your Name Has Slipped My Mind Again," which I want played at my funeral. On repeat.

Search "Maximum Acceleration" from "Systems of Romance", or "Mr.X" er, actually better still, the German lyrick version "Herr X" which was a b-side. Destroy....dunno, really, there was a pretty lame cover ov Eno's "King's Lead Hat" on a 12" b-side, so perhaps that'll do. I like Ultravox a lot. here's an earlier ILM Ultravox thread

Norman Phay, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

S: Systems Of Romance, "Man Who Dies Everyday", "Stranger Within", much of the rest of Ultravox & Ha! Ha! Ha! and a few bits from Vienna

D: "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes" (unless you want a laff) & most of the rest of Midge Ure era

on Amazon UK, Gary Numan recently selected Systems Of Romance as one of his all-time faves & inspirations

That Japan thread had me thinking about Ultravox too. I don't own anything by them, but from what I remember of their first two albums, I think I might want to pick them up at some point. And I remember liking some John Foxx solo stuff at the time, but am not sure what it would do for me now. (It at least seems as worthy as some 80's material which is better known.)

Search! That first album! Especially with the gatefold cover!

Sean, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

metamatic by john foxx is simply the best album of the synth-pop/new romantic movement....

if you don't know it go and download 'plaza' this instant

Search: "Reap the Wild Wind"

Destroy: pretty much everything else.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Alex, I'm surprised. "Reap the Wild Wind" is Ultravox at their schmaltziest. I guess I misread you; I thought you'd be into their first couple... not even "Ha Ha Ha"?

Sean, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I agree that "Reap..." is supremely schmaltzy, but it still captures a certain era for me. Their earlier stuff left me largely cold.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Y'all want hyperschmaltz?

"DANCIIING! With TEEEEEEEEEEEEARS in my EYES!"

Yay the singles collection and the Lament album, which is a weird, restrained album in many ways. And yay early Ultravox and especially "Hiroshima Mon Amour." Destroy -- some of those photo shoots in the early eighties and anything any member aside from Foxx did after 1985.

Alex in NYC, you might find the live retro ep version of Young Savage an interesting listen - its actually quite KJs Requi-e-em ish sounding.

My favourite U! song is Just For a Moment though. Its heartbreakingly beautiful. Like Ray, I saw them on the SoR tour (Dunfermline Kinema, supported by a pretty amazing Doll by Doll). It was third-eye scrapingly, doors of perception destroyingly intense show.

i love ultravox (and both midge ure and john foxx). alex said that "reap the wild wind" captures a certain era for him, and i have to agree. that and "overlook" just scream out "80s!!!" to me. i love it.

seven months pass...
I'm a huge Ultravox fan and have to say that I can't pick & choose between the John Foxx era and the Midge Ure era -- I've got to have both of them! As for "Dancing...", well if you don't like the song you HAVE to have liked the video. I may be a bit biased, but that is the best video I've ever seen in my entire life. And yes, it is a bit cheesy, but it introduced me to the band, and if I hadn't done that, I would have never known about their gems -- including "Hymn", "We Came to Dance", and the whole of that first album that was thankfully mentioned by Sean (thank YOU! -- also, if you can actually find the album with that gatefold cover, PLEASE allow me to physically rub some of that good luck onto me).

Destroy? Erm, none of them, really. And nobody better touch Billy Currie -- I keep hearing that he's such a sweetie.

Search: "Vienna" and two compilations (one of their John Foxx period and one of their Midge Ure period). Destroy: More or less the rest.

seventeen years pass...

Listened to the first Ultravox LP with John Foxx yesterday and upon hearing "I want to be a Machine" was thinking that this is what Radiohead would have sounded like if they cut a record in '77.

earlnash, Saturday, 25 April 2020 13:53 (four years ago) link

Well obviously it would not sound like THAT, they all probably would have been 8-9 years old at the time, but you probably get what I am saying.

earlnash, Saturday, 25 April 2020 13:54 (four years ago) link

I mean it is an incredible song yeah. And by the next album they were even better!

imago, Saturday, 25 April 2020 14:07 (four years ago) link

It is however longer than the longest Radiohead studio recording - Yorke and co never let themselves jam it out to that extent (to their detriment imo)

imago, Saturday, 25 April 2020 14:08 (four years ago) link

hey, all i have is vienna and i think it's swell. i seem to recall checking out systems of romance on a crappy listening station in an overly loud shop some years ago and thinking it was kind of boring. but this could be a false memory or something. where should i go next?

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Saturday, 25 April 2020 23:57 (four years ago) link

you should get that one, definitely, imo. Not quite as hooky as Vienna but Conrad Plank’s production is sublime

vinyl copies used to be cheap and not rare but who knows these days

brimstead, Sunday, 26 April 2020 00:58 (four years ago) link

cool! didn't know conny plank was involved, that's rad! just scooped a $5 copy on discogs.

Plank also produced Vienna and Rage in Eden

octobeard, Sunday, 26 April 2020 06:01 (four years ago) link

two weeks pass...

so i got systems of romance and i was a bit taken aback at how much more of a rock band they sound like on it. lots of flange and fast chords, very new wave. it's not as immediately tuneful as vienna, but it's clearly a completely different vibe. i think i need to sit with it a few more listens.

They were never great in toto, but I like the schlock of SOR a lot.
