fuckin' holy hell, phil, have you heard this yet? fuckin' norway, man. and a fuckin' motorhead cover? this is like one of philthy phil phreeman's phuckin' phever dreams or something. it's like casper brotzman fucking mitch mitchell with elvin jones.

best song title: While My Guitar Gently Breaks

sorry, press blurbs got the best of me. but still, pretty rad stuff. i am digging, as they say.

scott seward, Sunday, 30 May 2010 02:23 (thirteen years ago) link

and you thought the elephant9 album was good...

scott seward, Sunday, 30 May 2010 02:23 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm not sure there's a copy here in my house. I'll have to get Forced Exposure to send me one.

you will dig.

six months pass...

Best of 2010...And one of the best sounding recordings i've heard in a very long time. I really hope more people hear this...

Sanford, Thursday, 2 December 2010 05:31 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, nobody cares. i still play it though.

scott seward, Thursday, 2 December 2010 05:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Well, I turned a couple drummers on to it.
(Don't think that counts for anything though.)

Sanford, Thursday, 2 December 2010 05:53 (thirteen years ago) link

whenever i had bands play in my store and i put it on they always asked what it was. its very musician-friendly.

scott seward, Thursday, 2 December 2010 05:58 (thirteen years ago) link

this thread has caused me to dig around through recent rune grammofon releases and associated spaces/tubes. holy cats @ kill your jitterbut darlings! sounds like a good version of the fucking champs baking cookies with prog rapeman. not really, but the other analogy sounds uncomfortable. also i have learned that i like motorpsycho, who sound like black sabbath fucking black sabbath with an off-brand black sabbath.

phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Thursday, 2 December 2010 06:11 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd think especially for musicians who really love their instruments, and fetishize gear and tone and such.
Still, it's a real thrill ride of a record. Extremes of beauty and punishment!
(I have to hear their earlier 2, but afraid i'll be disappointed...)

Sanford, Thursday, 2 December 2010 06:24 (thirteen years ago) link

lol at my own jitterbut. and yeah, tones is ace, guitar occasionally reminds me of albini, both in recording and playing. two tracks off their previous LP on their myspace didn't do much for me, tbh.

phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Thursday, 2 December 2010 06:32 (thirteen years ago) link

(I seem to recall motorpsycho being some sort of scandinavian grateful dead...)
I didn't think of albini at all, but that makes sense. (bushman gtr sounds like he's using one of those metal guitar picks, and albini using that funny aluminum travis bean guitar. similar tones.)

Sanford, Thursday, 2 December 2010 06:37 (thirteen years ago) link

bushman's revenge is sum nice shit

Weird drum panning. Is your floor tom really --------------------> over there?

lol

best example of the albini-ish guitar playing/tone pops up at 0:40 or so, runs for only a couple bars, weird fidgetly little funkless chicken scratch riff with one contrasting note buzzing for counterpoint (wish i could describe what was going on here in clearer, less ignorant terms). anyway, it's strongly reminiscent of a favorite albini riff trick circa big black/rapeman, a personal touchstone. after that, i couldn't get the association out of my head, though the song overall has little in common w this style.

have listened to this song five times tonight.

phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Thursday, 2 December 2010 06:59 (thirteen years ago) link

lol, song i'm referring to there = kill your jitterbug darlings

phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Thursday, 2 December 2010 07:00 (thirteen years ago) link

"kill yr jitterbug darlings" reminding me of "babylon's burning" by the ruts

champagne for my t-friends (Edward III), Thursday, 2 December 2010 07:06 (thirteen years ago) link

also reminding me of another underappreciated european instrumental band

FUCK YEAH @ THIS

love jitterbug, impressive stuff.

btw, the last Motorpsycho album (Heavy Metal Fruit) is really really good too - hard rock, prog and psychedelia mixed with a healthy dose of spiritual jazz. Sounds pretentious but it is not.
sometimes they could indulge in grateful dead-like noodling, but when they're on they're the best live band in the world (check Roadwork 1). also they are able to write nice little pop tunes.

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 2 December 2010 09:36 (thirteen years ago) link

^ yeah, the tracks i listened to were off that one. nice BÖC nod in the album title...

phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Thursday, 2 December 2010 10:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Once I've finished listening to Vol. 4, I will be listening to this record.

Neil S, Thursday, 2 December 2010 11:51 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost
every Blue Oyster Cult nod is more than welcome!

Motorpsycho's Timothy's Monster is like the Rosetta stone of 90's European rock (ok, I doesnt sound very appealing but I mean this in a good sense), while Angels & Daemons At Play and Blissard have plenty of good songs and space jams.

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 2 December 2010 14:27 (thirteen years ago) link

I heard and liked Bushman's Revenge You Lost Me At Hello from 2009, but never heard the new one.

xhuxk, Thursday, 2 December 2010 14:32 (thirteen years ago) link

the thread title makes me want to hear this album.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 2 December 2010 14:36 (thirteen years ago) link

great stuff this

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 2 December 2010 20:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Thanks for the tip on this. Listened to it on the commute this morning--reminded me more of a latter-day Sonny Sharrock record than anything else. I agree the mixing/panning was wierd, at least on headphones the bass seemed way too low.

My vote for best title is 'Too Old to Die Young' btw.

one year passes...

my god this sounds like turgid flaccid old man's sunday-afternoon blues-rock music.
prog rapeman would equal upsilon acrux, no? these guys make endless boogie sound like orthrelm.

There's a new Bushman's Revenge disc out or imminent - I haven't listened to it, but it's sitting here.

digging this!

yeah that was kinda "harder-core-than-thou" of me which again is my hilarious involuntary hypocrisy ( i hate harder core than thou - dang ! ). but i didn't dig it & was kinda taken aback by the "prog rapeman" description which the describer says in the very same sentence is totaly inaccurate anyhow. duh! i guess they're kinda like tia carrere in a way ( who i prefer but have still gone off of )

iglu ferrignu, Thursday, 16 February 2012 12:36 (twelve years ago) link

i really like the tia carrera album that came out last year. i've been playing it a bunch. great for earthless fans.
