Undertow is the debut full-length album by American progressive metal band Tool, released in 1993. At the time, grunge was at the height of its popularity, and pop punk was slowly beginning to gather mainstream attention. Undertow helped heavy metal music remain prominent as a mainstream musical style, and allowed several later bands to break through to the mainstream. Allmusic saw the album's success in the "striking, haunting visuals that complemented the album's nihilistic yet wistful mood." It was eventually certified double platinum by the RIAA on May 14, 2001.

Not expecting a ton of posts/votes, but there's gotta be some ILM fans out there...

"Intolerance" vs "Sober" vs "Swamp Song" for me

(also this just reinforces that I have no idea what "metal" actually is)

I voted "Flood" -- you're right that the intro's a bit too long, though.

Don't take it the Lateralus poll is gonna be too popular, given this one has, um, 8-9 posts?

love "prison sex," "sober," and "crawl away," but gotta go with "swamp song." don't usually fall for songs that repeat the same verse over and over but in this case it's a killer verse

Prison Sex. There's a lot filler on this album.

Vanilla Douche (res), Thursday, 13 May 2010 03:12 (seven years ago) Permalink

took me a long time to get into this album, but i really like it now. "bottom," with "undertow" a close second.

borntohula, Thursday, 13 May 2010 03:37 (seven years ago) Permalink

to me, "bottom" is one of the few songs where they really wear their influences on their sleeves. there was a time where i really had a hard time telling the difference between rollins and maynard's voices on this song. "bottom" is also a song i really wish they'd pull out in a live set.

Definitely "Bottom."

Agreed. It's a charming piece of work (as much as Tool can be called "charming," I suppose) but it's flawed, uneven.

Prison Sex for the blood shit and cum line. This is my favourite Tool album actually, later ones got too into trickiness at the expense of rocking.

And great for the pun "feel it inside of me!!!" ("feel it in sodomy").

There's some shitty pop song that was inescapable for a few years-- maybe that "Kryptonite" song, I can't remember-- where the dude says "inside of me" a lot and I always heard "sodomy," which was always a pick-me-up.

what do you guys mean by filler? like they only had enough good material for an EP but it feels like they added stuff to make it a full length? or just the quality of songwriting is uneven? what songs are filler?

borntohula, Thursday, 13 May 2010 18:56 (seven years ago) Permalink

Ironically, it sounds much less ominous on the Tool song than it does here (see 2:24):

Intolerance 0

Really??

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 13 May 2010 23:24 (seven years ago) Permalink

yeah that's a bit surprising to me too. it's got one of the most memorable hooks(?) on that album.

the other two songs that went without votes are less surprising, though not throwaway tracks by any means. the only thing about "crawl away" that i really don't like is the rhyme scheme "say, pay, me (pronounced may)." "disgustipated" has always been frustrating because of how drawn out that intro is, but its a gem once it gets going. it would've been interesting to see them try and play it live.

borntohula, Friday, 14 May 2010 04:22 (seven years ago) Permalink

this is one of the first cd's i purchased and i'm kinda disappointed i didn't vote. i don't know what i would've voted for though, it's been probably 10 years since i've listened to it.

intolerance is definitely one of the better tracks, though. i expected that to be in the top half of the results.
