album covers make it a standalone class act. what do you guys think?

sweaty palms, Monday, 1 March 2010 23:34 (fourteen years ago) link

Love the Zola Jesus and Gary War stuff, for sure. The 13th Chime reissues have their moments too, definitely. I haven't really "gotten" the Carl Simmons record... Moon Duo are kind of annoying.

jonathan - stl, Tuesday, 2 March 2010 00:43 (fourteen years ago) link

I love most of this stuff!

My favorites:
Factums 'The Sistrum' LP
Children's Hospital "Alone Together" LP
Carl Simmons LP (it is a thing.)
Zola 7" & LP
The Rebel live LP--limited edition came packaged in a black satin bag.

I like the Moon Duo record! And though I'm not generally a huge post-punk guy, I do enjoy the 13th Chime reissues a lot.

Joint Custody (ian), Tuesday, 2 March 2010 00:57 (fourteen years ago) link

great label, factums and moon duo and gary war especially.

samosa gibreel, Tuesday, 2 March 2010 01:06 (fourteen years ago) link

I think that the Children's Hospital lp is my fave.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 2 March 2010 01:13 (fourteen years ago) link

Zola Jesus - The Spoils has definitely been one of my top go-to discs of the past months...in particular the CD version which adds the two previous sevens. i don't feel that "Dog", "Six Feet (From My Baby)" or "Clay Bodies" can be dissed or wrecked a'mighty.

Factums - Flowers. a great 'new' disc, though recorded several years ago. put on "Gold" at top volume and tell me honestly you didn't just bust a rib flailin' around tha room.

even if they didn't put out fantastic new music, they would still be a swell reissue label...both the 13th Chime and Cultural Decay discs are ace in my book...looking forward to hearing what else they can dig up/put out.

unfortunately haven't heard the Children's Hospital LP but given the above recommendations will be checking it v. soon....uh, yo!

Zola Jesus is basically my favorite new-ish artist.

I am so excited for her new one.

Thanks for that page. I love this label. Children's Hospital is my favorite too (just recently finally got it on vinyl). Factums. The first Blank Dogs ep. The new Zola Jesus is very good. So much goodness

do all these new lofi punky garage bands use the spector beat exclusively?

jaxon, Thursday, 25 March 2010 22:08 (fourteen years ago) link

I think that Carl Simmins benefits by changing the record speed to your liking from song to song. In fact, I sort of think it's expected.

Slug Guts LP is a monster and Föllakzoid is perfect for zoning out and I am super psyched about the new Moon Duo and TRUST and Naked on the Vague stuff. not feeling the Cult of Youth record but I know lots of people who would dig it. The Nice Face was my favorite thing last year with Effi Briest not to far behind. basically the best label right now.

fffv, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 02:08 (thirteen years ago) link

effi briest record is great. don't like the CoY record at all though..

la broheme (electricsound), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 02:09 (thirteen years ago) link

basically the best label right now.

They've been on a roll over the last year.

van smack, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 02:13 (thirteen years ago) link

i like nice face, too, & effi briest. i've never been ~blown away~ by a sacred bones release (except maybe factums' flowers) but i've also never heard one that wasn't chill & rly good. moon duo 12" i heard last year was ok, a bit too boring but haven't written them off or anything, a new lp could be gr8

agree, the Moon Duo record blew me away on first listen. i'm gonna carve out more time for it this week. totally great album. haven't gotten to the bonus disc yet, but looks v. promising -- Sonic Boom, Cave, Psychic Ills, couple others i forget

these guys should really just work like a 401k. you throw them a bit from every pay period and they keep sending you records...you can then go home and retire to great stuff every night.

Stupid question: do all of SB's vinyl releases include a download, or is it just some releases/more recent ones? I've been trying to get an answer from the label, but I'm not sure my email is getting through.

I don't know why I even bought that Men album; it seemed more like something I *should* have liked rather than something I actually did like. I get whiplash from how different every track is. And I usually like albums that have thematic and genre variety, but something about it didn't work for me.
