El GarBage (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 19 February 2010 22:35 (ten years ago) link

Namgar, the singer from the family line of white shamans. In the heart of Siberia, under bottomless blue sky, there the songs sung by Namgar were born.
She is a daughter of the steppe, born to a cattle herder whose line included the darkhasha craftsmen and white shamans.
She masters the mysteries of the great wide open, voices of spirits of mountains and forests. Love to the melodies sung by her granny and her father, the wish to maintain the tradition that is becoming extinct, brought her on festival stages around the world.
She sings long songs and yokhor dance tunes, uliger legends of mighty champions, precise arrows, and swift horses, just as they used to sing ages ago, with music arranged so that the jewels of her singing were accessible on world music stage.
Namgar has been the cult Buryat singer for people in Buryatia and Mongolia, and beyond in East Siberia.

Matt, I saw them at globalfest this year and was floored; i was told they were traditional mongolian music and freaked out when they sounded like Tull and Sabbath. The album is a good time and highly recommended.

Try Tunka.
BTW, if you haven't used it before: you gotta register, but everything on Lala is free for the first listen... and, if you're crafty about hitting the fast-forward button, for multiple listens.

forks explain crafty w fast foward button on lala?

call all destroyer, Sunday, 21 February 2010 20:29 (ten years ago) link

fred, imo, is mostly for tweens and the occasional slightly bizarre strain of hipster that wants to be "tween-hip"

"Crafty with ffwd on lala" means that you hit forward or rewind to the next track on the album JUST BEFORE the song ends. You see, Lala only registers you as having heard a song when it finishes and once you've finished a song it will only play a 30 second sample from that point on. If you're fast on your feet, you can relisten to a track dozens of times. I also recommend listening to singles as single eps independent of the album. Always hit stop when you're done listening!

I will never understand how the minds of people who spend seconds/minutes/hours work, turning a 16 year old concerned w/ the future of the planet into a dumb meme

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 26 September 2019 19:48 (nine months ago) link

idk if i can explain why this works for me beyond the level of "dumb meme," but it has something to do with the fact that the only music that reflects how angry i am about the end of the world is extreme metal

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 26 September 2019 19:54 (nine months ago) link

so, imo, this feels like it captures the essence of the speech, rather than trivializing it

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 26 September 2019 19:55 (nine months ago) link

That's a very necessary and welcome explanation, to see it as something commenting on the current crisis instead of trivializing it. Still feel Thunberg/anyone does not deserve to be memefied (who does it benefit? what good does it do? no-one and nothing, I so fucking hate it), but your context made me sigh a breath of relief, as I couldn't believe you'd actually gone Nelson (Simpsons Nelson, that is).

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 26 September 2019 20:02 (nine months ago) link

oh trust me i cried at her actual speech

death metal version also features some solid riffage and does not feel like a lazy attempt at meme metal
