yelawolf is a really nice singer
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 5 January 2010 07:51 (fourteen years ago) link
he basically just turns into andre 3000 for that song.
― samosa gibreel, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 07:56 (fourteen years ago) link
there are some real moments on the tape where he sounds almost exactly like andre - most notably on the track w/ rae when he says "and he packs a nasty heater" - his inflection when he clips off the last syllable sounds just like andre to me

every time i'd heard a passing mention of the guy before i just thought "wow that's a lame abbrevvi for Gucci Mane"
hah he's actually really good. i haven't listened to that tape but he had a trak with g-side that i posted in autogoon that was a total fucking monster with a video.
i'm gonna go ahead and call him Hunstville's Trae the truth. even though he also reminds me almost as much of bun b

how bout Juicy J's new clik
with names ranging from Yoyo Munie and Lil Reno to Insane, Tracks, and Cash.
over whom Juicy J reigns as "The God Father" with his capo V-Slash who looks like a cross between the fat black kid from Old School and Meat Loaf in fight club

haha yeah especially because the first year is actually 1980...but it is the best way that's on my ipod right at this very moment....
but dude, are there any crucial comps out there?
i guess maybe there wasn't a whole lot of actual recording going on in the 70s, alot of the real shit was probably lost to time

i still think pill has commercial potential, if not immediately then somewhere down the line. gibbs is not interested in commercialism & probably has limited appeal anyway. i think it would be a bit of a waste for pill.

One thing that I like about Yelawolf is he's such a musical rapper. He really reacts to changes in the beat.
― swag the dog (The Reverend), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 12:08 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah start the gibbs backlash without me. yiz are tripping. as musical a rapper as anybody both in the melodies (you know that's him singing on there right?) and the syncopation of his raps. And huge fun. the hyper falsetto behind those "smoke like i've never smoked before" lines on the midwestgangta bonus track is lol. sorry if u don't get it because those tapes gave me as much pleasure as any rap release last year.
deej: i like those two cuts from dj fresh, the tonite show: the album. are they obvious standouts or is it good throughout? i don't love the style so much that i'd take a chance on the strength.
the yelawolf is very good. there are six strong cuts on it: Box Chevy 3, Speak Her Sex (hate that pun, gonna just call it Speaker Sex. who is that singer? i like how she seems oblivious to yelawolf's verses), Pop the Trunk, Love Is Not Enough, Good to Go, and I Wish in very roughly that order. The last verse of Good to Go so good ("'Pocket Full of Stoooooones'" from falling off his bike or something?) but the hook is a bit obnoxious. He gets so complex in his verses on this tape and has all these melodic touches that he simplifies way too much sometimes on the hook ("In This Club" for instance is inexplicable). Compare it to the drama he injects into a car song (Box Chevy) and it feels like missed opportunities. Rittz kills it on that, who is that guy? I really like the device of ending the verses to Love Is Not Enough with a last line rapped (more like spoken) overlapping with the first sung (is there a name for that overlap verse chorus device?) "rollin' down 20 man" with what seems to me a slightly different enunciation every time that has a slightly different emotional emphasis. Trunk Muzik is a comp of his mixtape cuts, right? The youmustlearn piece referenced these tracks.
it's funny that there are "ways in" to all the new rappers that are currently hot on the internet. gibbs has that from where?, dropped by interscope, releasing music for free narrative. pill has the killer mike affiliation, connection with gibbs, "trap goin ham" vid. yelawolf is a white rapper from alabama who looks like a NY hipster trying to look like yelawolf and ppl have found that identity intriguing. G-Side are a bit of an exception since they came up on appreciation of the production. Still kind of an exotic locale as far as rap goes, tho, i suppose.

loool @ "yelawolf is a white rapper from alabama who looks like a NY hipster trying to look like yelawolf"
― swag the dog (The Reverend), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 13:49 (fourteen years ago) link
wait so the reason i should not be bored by a man named freddie gibbs is because 1) he was dropped by interscope and 2) he's musical and something about the "syncopation of his raps"
right.
devin the dude + z-ro are still rapping and have made enough extra music for me before i have to resort to a tribute rapper. theyre not even dead yet
sorry i don't give a fuck what brings you pleasure. do your thing listen to your old man from the midwest internet rap tape and see which of you two can name all the UGK albums fastest. there's not much to not get about these dudes. the shit that freddie gibbs represents is not what i look for in new rappers, he's revisionist in the same way someone who is not from new york would hyper-value the sean prices of the world and create their own little 90s golden age ressurected version of that sound, plus they'd be from like pittsburgh or some shit, in this hypothetical analogy that i'm creating. sounds fucking awful. shit's boring. pill's boring too but at least he's got a youthful, exciting kind of urgency that reminds me of rap and why i liked every single rapper ive ever liked, even though i don't really even like him very much.
only dude i'm gonna ride for out of the new hyped rappers of right now is Nipsey Hussle.
